Deficits in memory performance have been linked to a wide range of neurological and neuropsychiatric conditions. While many studies have assessed the memory impacts of individual conditions, this study considers a broader perspective by evaluating how memory recall is differentially associated with nine common neuropsychiatric conditions using data drawn from 55 international studies, aggregating 15,883 unique participants aged 15-90. The effects of dementia, mild cognitive impairment, Parkinson's disease, traumatic brain injury, stroke, depression, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder on immediate, short-, and long-delay verbal learning and memory (VLM) scores were estimated relative to matched healthy individuals.

A transthalamic pathway crucial for perception.

Perception is largely supported by cortical processing that involves communication among multiple areas, typically starting with primary sensory cortex and then involving higher order cortices. This communication is served in part by transthalamic (cortico-thalamo-cortical) pathways, which ubiquitously parallel direct corticocortical pathways, but their role in sensory processing has largely remained unexplored. Here, we suggest that transthalamic processing propagates task-relevant information required for correct sensory decisions.

The biological mediators that initiate lung injury in extremely preterm infants during early postnatal life remain largely unidentified, limiting opportunities for early treatment and diagnosis. In this exploratory study, we used sequential window acquisition of all theoretical mass spectra mass spectrometry to identify bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD)-specific changes in protein abundance in plasma samples obtained in the first 72 hours of life from extremely preterm infants and bioinformatic analysis to identify BPD-related biological categories and pathways. Last, binary logistic regression analysis was used to test the BPD predictive potential of a base model alone (gestational age, birth weight, sex) and with the protein biomarker added, with bootstrap resampling used to internally validate protein predictors and adjust for overoptimism.

Purpose: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is associated with brain accumulation of amyloid-beta (Aβ) and neurofibrillary tangle formation, in addition to reduced brain docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and increased brain iron levels. DHA requires access across the blood-brain barrier (BBB) to enter the brain, and iron has been shown to affect the expression and function of a number of BBB transporters. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the effect of iron on the expression and function of fatty acid binding protein 5 (FABP5) and fatty acid transport protein 1 (FATP1), both which mediate brain endothelial cell trafficking of DHA.

The nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS) receives direct viscerosensory vagal afferent input that drives autonomic reflexes, neuroendocrine function and modulates behaviour. Accelerated brain ageing has been observed in multiple psychiatric disorders. This study examined whether relationships between age and plasma neurofilament light (NfL) protein differed in individuals with psychiatric disorders (major depressive disorder (n = 42), bipolar affective disorder (n = 121), treatment-resistant schizophrenia (TRS, n = 82)) compared to two healthy control (HC) groups (n = 1,926 and n = 59). Compared to two independent HC samples, individuals with TRS demonstrated a stronger positive relationship between age and NfL levels.
