The current study examines the extent to which the argument of Agnew's general strain theory extends to a sample of South Korean youth to be able to explain the hypothesized direct and indirect/mediated effects of negative emotions derived from various negative life experiences of strain on delinquent behaviors. These experiences can include bullying victimization, parental abuse, poor friend quality, and poor physical functioning. Data for this study were compiled from the Korean Welfare Panel Study (KOWEPS), which is a longitudinal study among 7,027 Korean households surveyed from 2006 through 2012.

This prospective investigation describes the process of designing a targeted, data-driven team training aimed at reducing identified process inefficiencies or flow disruptions (FDs) that threaten the optimal delivery of trauma care. Trained researchers observed and classified FDs during 34 trauma cases in a Level II trauma center. Multidisciplinary trauma personnel generated interventions to identified issues using the human factors intervention matrix (HFIX).

Given the challenges in patient non-adherence and the lack of training in healthcare providers' communication and in application of bedside manners, this manuscript suggests an innovative approach for physicians working with patients by applying the marketing literature's seven-step sales process. This article explores ways to apply the sales process to healthcare providers' interactions with patients. This approach views the healthcare interaction with patients as a sales scenario and is shared by connecting existing marketing literature that delineates specific selling tactics to examples of those tactics in the healthcare environment.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is an eating disorder that is thought to emerge through biological predisposition(s) within sociocultural context(s). Practical and ethical concerns limit study of the etiology of this disorder in humans, and in particular the biological aspects. Laboratory animal models have a pivotal role in advancing our understanding of the neurobiological, physiological and behavioral aspects of this disorder, and developing new treatment strategies.

South Florida's water infrastructure and ecosystems are under pressure from socio-economic growth. Understanding the region's water resources management tradeoffs is essential for developing effective adaptation strategies to cope with emerging challenges such as climate change and sea level rise, which are expected to affect many other regions in the future. We describe a network-based hydro-economic optimization model of the system to investigate the tradeoffs, incorporating the economic value of water in urban and agricultural sectors and economic damages due to urban flooding while also accounting for water supply to sustain fragile ecosystems such as the Everglades and coastal estuaries.

DNA metabarcoding is an increasingly popular method to characterize and quantify biodiversity in environmental samples. Metabarcoding approaches simultaneously amplify a short, variable genomic region, or "barcode," from a broad taxonomic group via the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), using universal primers that anneal to flanking conserved regions. Results of these experiments are reported as occurrence data, which provide a list of taxa amplified from the sample, or relative abundance data, which measure the relative contribution of each taxon to the overall composition of amplified product.

This study estimates economic loss from South Florida croplands when usage of agricultural irrigation water is altered. In South Florida, 78% of the total value of farm products sold is comprised of cropland products. The majority of Florida citrus and sugarcane are produced in the area, and agricultural irrigation was the largest sector of water use in 2010, followed by public water supply.

Much of the content delivered during medical students' preclinical years is assessed nationally by such testing as the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE ) Step 1 and Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination (COMPLEX-USA ) Step 1. Improvement of student study/learning strategies skills is associated with academic success in internal and external (USMLE Step 1) examinations. This research explores the strength of association between the Learning and Study Strategies Inventory (LASSI) scores and student performance in the anatomical sciences and USMLE Step 1 examinations.

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are widespread in the United States among people ages 15-24 years and cost almost $16 billion yearly. It is therefore important to understand message design strategies that could help reduce these numbers. Guided by exemplification theory and the extended parallel process model (EPPM), this study examines the influence of message format and the presence versus absence of a graphic image on recipients' accessibility of STI attitudes regarding safe sex.

College students' use of digital communication technology has led to a rapid expansion of digital alcohol marketing efforts. Two surveys (total usable n = 637) were conducted to explore college students' experiences with alcohol-related social media, their decision making related to alcohol use, and their problematic drinking behaviors. Study results indicated that students' use of alcohol-related social media predicted their problem drinking behaviors.

Objective: This study examines the potential effects of nativity and acculturation on active life expectancy (ALE) among Mexican-origin elders.
Method: We employ 17 years of data from the Hispanic Established Population for the Epidemiologic Study of the Elderly to calculate ALE at age 65 with and without disabilities.
Results: Native-born males and foreign-born females spend a larger fraction of their elderly years with activities of daily living (ADL) disability.

Soils contain much of Earth's terrestrial organic carbon but are sensitive to land-use. Rangelands are important to carbon dynamics and are among ecosystems most widely impacted by land-use. While common practices like grazing, fire, and tillage affect soil properties directly related to soil carbon dynamics, their magnitude and direction of change vary among ecosystems and with intensity of disturbance.

Udell, Dorey, and Wynne (2011) demonstrated that both domesticated and nondomesticated canids-specifically, gray wolves-have the capacity to succeed on perspective-taking tasks, suggesting that dogs' ability to respond to the human attentional state is not a by-product of domestication alone. Furthermore, not all dogs were successful on the task. Instead, the occluder type used was a strong predictor of performance, indicating the important role of environment and experience for tasks of this type.
