Free-living amoebae (FLA) rarely cause human infections but can invoke fatal infections in the central nervous system (CNS). No consensus treatment has been established for FLA infections of the CNS, emphasizing the urgent need to discover or develop safe and effective drugs. Flavonoids, natural compounds from plants and plant-derived products, are known to have antiprotozoan activities against several pathogenic protozoa parasites.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers developed a mutagenesis protocol for chrysanthemum cv. "Candid" using physical and chemical mutagens, resulting in 24 unique mutants.
  • The study found that 10 Gy gamma irradiation resulted in the lowest mortality rate and greatest genetic diversity in flower colors, while 1.00% EMS produced more viable mutants.
  • Genetic diversity among the mutants was assessed using RAPD and SSR markers, with OPA-07 (RAPD) and JH47 (SSR) showing the highest effectiveness for capturing variation, suggesting their potential use in chrysanthemum breeding.

Fasciclin-like arabinogalactan proteins (FLAs), a subclass of arabinogalactan proteins (AGPs), participate in mediating plant growth, development, and response to abiotic stress. However, the characterization and function of in tomato are currently unknown. In this study, members of the tomato family are characterized and analyzed in relation to their response to phytohormonal and abiotic stresses.

Objective: Endothelial to mesenchymal transition may represent a key link between inflammatory stress and endothelial dysfunction seen in aortic aneurysm disease. Endothelial to mesenchymal transition is regulated by interleukin-1β, and previous work has demonstrated an essential role of interleukin-1 signaling in experimental aortic aneurysm models. We hypothesize that endothelial to mesenchymal transition is present in murine aortic aneurysms, and loss of interleukin-1 signaling attenuates this process.

Pharmacoequity in Allergy-Immunology: Disparities in Access to Medications for Allergic Diseases and Proposed Solutions in the United States and Globally.

J Allergy Clin Immunol Pract

February 2024

Division of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, Department of Medicine, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston, Mass; Department of Medicine, Harvard Medical School, Boston, Mass. Electronic address:

Pharmacoequity is the principle that individuals should have access to high-quality medications regardless of race and ethnicity, socioeconomic status, or availability of resources. In this review, we summarize access to therapeutics for allergic diseases in the United States and other selected countries. We focus on domains of health care access (health insurance coverage, medication availability, and specialist access) as well as system-level factors and clinician- and patient-level factors such as interpersonal racism and cultural beliefs, and how they can affect timely access to appropriate therapy for allergic diseases.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a common cause of morbidity and mortality. Nonfocal liver biopsy is the historical reference standard for evaluating NAFLD, but it is limited by invasiveness, high cost, and sampling error. Imaging methods are ideally situated to provide quantifiable results and rule out other anatomic diseases of the liver.
