Epidemiological, cross-sectional, and prospective studies strongly suggest that exercise has beneficial effects on bone mass in premenopausal women. We prospectively compared the effects of resistance or aerobic exercises on regional bone mass in premenopausal active duty military women ranging in age from 19 to 40 years. Subjects were assigned, by preference, to a resistance exercise group or an aerobic exercise group and instructed to exercise at least 30 minutes per day, three times per week, for a period of 1 year.

Newborns possess an altered immune response to infection with impaired leukocyte chemotaxis and deficient production of gamma-interferon (IFN-gamma). IFN-gamma enhances neonatal leukocyte activation and movement. We proposed that IFN-gamma in conjunction with penicillin compared to penicillin therapy without IFN-gamma would increase survival from group B streptococcal sepsis in a neonatal rat model.

Postpneumonectomy pulmonary edema (PPE) is a rarely reported form of acute lung injury which occurs in up to 4% of all pneumonectomies. The details of two well-documented cases of PPE are described with special emphasis paid to the preoperative lung functions. Both cases illustrated a striking disparity between preserved spirometric lung function and advanced emphysema as detected by quantitative CT emphysema scores and single-breath diffusion of carbon monoxide measurements.

Background: Patients with abdominal aortic aneurysm often are followed up with serial ultrasound examinations, but published studies usually describe rupture risk according to the diameter of the abdominal aortic aneurysm at diagnosis rather than by most recent ultrasound. Information in this form is misleading when used to predict prognosis.
Methods: We used data from the population-based cohort of residents of Rochester, Minn, diagnosed as having abdominal aortic aneurysm who have had at least 1 ultrasound measurement.

Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate and illustrate the use of Indium In-111 pentetreotide scintigraphy as it applies to carotid body tumors (CBT). Localization has relied primarily on ultrasonography, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging with angiographic confirmation. These methods only assess the cervical bifurcation without providing an evaluation of metastasis in patients without symptoms or recurrence in patients after surgery.

In November 1994, the Department of Pharmacy at Madigan Army Medical Center and the 62nd Medical Group Logistics (Fort Lewis, Washington) examined the feasibility of prime vendor support for the 18th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital in a Table of Organization and Equipment (TOE) unit rapid deployment. The TOE medication list was deemed to be out of date and a state-of-the-art formulary was developed. By identifying three National Drug Code bioequivalent substitutes for each National Stock Number, a 94% prime vendor match was achieved for pharmaceuticals form the new formulary serving as our template.
