To discover the means of persuasion available to experts who embrace the responsibility of public communication in times of crisis, this study uses a text/countertext method of rhetorical analysis on U.S. newspaper editorials by scientists writing about COVID-19 policy.

A mathematical model of visceral leishmaniasis transmission and control: Impact of ITNs on VL prevention and elimination in the Indian subcontinent.

Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL) is a deadly, vector-borne, parasitic, neglected tropical disease, particularly prevalent on the Indian subcontinent. Sleeping under the long-lasting insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) was considered an effective VL prevention and control measures, until KalaNet, a large trial in Nepal and India, did not show enough supporting evidence. In this paper, we adapt a biologically accurate, yet relatively simple compartmental ordinary differential equations (ODE) model of VL transmission and explicitly model the use of ITNs and their role in VL prevention and elimination.

Defining "Ethical Mathematical Practice" Through Engagement with Discipline-Adjacent Practice Standards and the Mathematical Community.

This project explored what constitutes "ethical practice of mathematics". Thematic analysis of ethical practice standards from mathematics-adjacent disciplines (statistics and computing), were combined with two organizational codes of conduct and community input resulting in over 100 items. These analyses identified 29 of the 52 items in the 2018 American Statistical Association Ethical Guidelines for Statistical Practice, and 15 of the 24 additional (unique) items from the 2018 Association of Computing Machinery Code of Ethics for inclusion.

More specifically for the current research, victimization and friendships occur in classrooms and, increasingly, in online virtual contexts. The current research examined how the number of classroom friends and number of cyber friends related to the extent of classroom victimization and extent of cyber victimization.

Introduction: The pandemic-driven surge in global distance simulation (DS) adoption highlighted the need for effective educator training. A literature search identified the gap regarding human factors (HF) considerations for the professional development of DS practitioners. A Short-Term Longitudinal Examination of the Relation of Forms of Antipathy Relationships to Children's Loneliness, Peer Optimism, and Peer Sociability Behaviors.

Researchers have focused on children's friendship relationships more than antipathy (disliking) relationships. The present one-year longitudinal research examined the relation of different forms of antipathy nominations (Mutual, Unilateral Given, Unilateral Received) to children's social competence (self-reports of loneliness and peer optimism, classroom peer nominations for sociability behaviors) for 121 third and fourth graders (fourth and fifth graders in Year 2). From path analyses, the pattern between forms of antipathy relationships to the measures of social competence was identical for concurrent findings at Time 1 and between forms of antipathy relationships and the measures of social competence one year later.

Interpreting Sequence-Levenshtein distance for determining error type and frequency between two embedded sequences of equal length.

Levenshtein distance is a commonly used edit distance metric, typically applied in language processing, and to a lesser extent, in molecular biology analysis. Biological nucleic acid sequences are often embedded in longer sequences and are subject to insertion and deletion errors that introduce frameshift during sequencing. These frameshift errors are due to string context and should not be counted as true biological errors.

Trace Elements and Consequent Ecological Risks in Mining-Influenced Streams of Appalachia.

Appalachian (eastern USA) coal surface mines fracture geologic materials, causing release of both major ions and trace elements to water via accelerated weathering. When elevated above natural background, trace elements in streams may produce adverse effects on biota via direct exposure from water and sediment and via dietary exposure in food sources. Other studies have found elevated water concentrations of multiple trace elements in Appalachia's mining-influenced streams.

Sulfidic schist release of As, Cu, and Pb in laboratory experiments and across eleven watersheds in central Massachusetts, USA.

Sulfidic schists are important rock formations due to their trace metal and metalloid (TMM) content and carry the potential for pyrite and pyrrhotite to hydrate and oxidize leading to acid-enhanced chemical weathering. The objectives of this study were to compare TMMs in sulfidic schists to other co-occurring bedrock, evaluate conditions that optimize TMM rock weathering, and examine streamwater TMMs in relation to bedrock lithology and human development in eleven streams across central Massachusetts. Sulfidic schists samples had the highest As (72 ± 46 mg kg), Cu (63 ± 21 mg kg), and Pb (63 ± 33 mg kg) concentrations.

Preparing New Nurses During a Pandemic.

At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, faculty, staff, and administrators at a large research university in the mid-Atlantic part of the country pivoted to move many classes, laboratories, and clinical experiences to a virtual environment to mitigate the risks of COVID-19. This article will highlight 2 exemplars of how faculty at this university provided students with options to learn in-person or online and how faculty managed to provide students with valuable online learning experiences. Through innovative teaching strategies, this university was able to graduate competent nurses when they were most needed by society.

Identifying and Unpacking the Role of Social Identity in Moderating Evaluations of Police-Civilian Interactions.

Scholars and policy makers rely on the theory of procedural justice (PJ) to further the twin goals of improving police-civilian relations and reducing crime. Substantial PJ research demonstrates that civilians evaluate fairness in police-civilian interactions based on voice, neutrality, trust, and respect. Although social identity is an important predictor and outcome of PJ, little research has examined how police officers, who have a unique social identity and sub-culture, evaluate fairness.
