Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL) is a deadly, vector-borne, parasitic, neglected tropical disease, particularly prevalent on the Indian subcontinent. Sleeping under the long-lasting insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) was considered an effective VL prevention and control measures, until KalaNet, a large trial in Nepal and India, did not show enough supporting evidence. In this paper, we adapt a biologically accurate, yet relatively simple compartmental ordinary differential equations (ODE) model of VL transmission and explicitly model the use of ITNs and their role in VL prevention and elimination.

Note-taking skill is an integral part of the learning process and has long been studied in relation to college students. Note-taking has not been extensively studied among nursing students. As the demand for nurses increases, there is an emphasis on understanding indicators of successful outcomes among nursing students.

Identifying how the demands of migration are met at the level of gene expression is critical for understanding migratory physiology and can potentially reveal how migratory forms evolve from nonmigratory forms and vice versa. Among fishes, migration between freshwater and seawater (diadromy) requires considerable osmoregulatory adjustments, powered by the ion pump Na, K-ATPase (NKA) in the gills. Paralogs of the catalytic α-subunit of the pump (NKA α1a and α1b) are reciprocally upregulated in fresh- and seawater, a response known as paralog-switching, in gills of some diadromous species.

Introduction: Elevated rates of musculoskeletal injuries (MSIs) and attrition are documented in military recruit training. By identifying and addressing modifiable risk factors, the rate of successful training completion and military readiness can be enhanced. Despite their impact, the causes of MSIs and attrition among U.

Introduction: Injury epidemiology research with military populations typically utilizes data obtained through medical chart review (MCR) or injury self-reports (ISRs). MCR data will not capture musculoskeletal injury (MSKI) data for which medical care was not sought, which is common during military recruit training. Injury self-report is affected by issues with recall, especially for MSKIs perceived as less severe.

Background: Severe and persistent mental illnesses (SPMIs) affect a significant portion of the adult population in the United States. Despite their enhanced medical disease burden, individuals with SPMIs often lack access to appropriate medical care. Home health services offer cost-effective options for caring for this population in the comfort of their homes.

This project explored what constitutes "ethical practice of mathematics". Thematic analysis of ethical practice standards from mathematics-adjacent disciplines (statistics and computing), were combined with two organizational codes of conduct and community input resulting in over 100 items. These analyses identified 29 of the 52 items in the 2018 American Statistical Association Ethical Guidelines for Statistical Practice, and 15 of the 24 additional (unique) items from the 2018 Association of Computing Machinery Code of Ethics for inclusion.

In the rapidly evolving landscape of wireless communication, each successive generation of networks has achieved significant technological leaps, profoundly transforming the way we connect and interact. From the analog simplicity of 1G to the digital prowess of 5G, the journey of mobile networks has been marked by constant innovation and escalating demands for faster, more reliable, and more efficient communication systems. As 5G becomes a global reality, laying the foundation for an interconnected world, the quest for even more advanced networks leads us to the threshold of the sixth-generation (6G) era.

Behaviors and relationships exist within a variety of social contexts. More specifically for the current research, victimization and friendships occur in classrooms and, increasingly, in online virtual contexts. The current research examined how the number of classroom friends and number of cyber friends related to the extent of classroom victimization and extent of cyber victimization.

Introduction: The pandemic-driven surge in global distance simulation (DS) adoption highlighted the need for effective educator training. A literature search identified the gap regarding human factors (HF) considerations for the professional development of DS practitioners. This study addresses this gap by applying HF principles to guide educators in developing and delivering evidence-based DS.

Researchers have focused on children's friendship relationships more than antipathy (disliking) relationships. The present one-year longitudinal research examined the relation of different forms of antipathy nominations (Mutual, Unilateral Given, Unilateral Received) to children's social competence (self-reports of loneliness and peer optimism, classroom peer nominations for sociability behaviors) for 121 third and fourth graders (fourth and fifth graders in Year 2). From path analyses, the pattern between forms of antipathy relationships to the measures of social competence was identical for concurrent findings at Time 1 and between forms of antipathy relationships and the measures of social competence one year later.

Industrial Control Systems (ICS), which include Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems, Distributed Control Systems (DCS), and Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), play a crucial role in managing and regulating industrial processes. However, ensuring the security of these systems is of utmost importance due to the potentially severe consequences of cyber attacks. This article presents an overview of ICS security, covering its components, protocols, industrial applications, and performance aspects.

Levenshtein distance is a commonly used edit distance metric, typically applied in language processing, and to a lesser extent, in molecular biology analysis. Biological nucleic acid sequences are often embedded in longer sequences and are subject to insertion and deletion errors that introduce frameshift during sequencing. These frameshift errors are due to string context and should not be counted as true biological errors.

Appalachian (eastern USA) coal surface mines fracture geologic materials, causing release of both major ions and trace elements to water via accelerated weathering. When elevated above natural background, trace elements in streams may produce adverse effects on biota via direct exposure from water and sediment and via dietary exposure in food sources. Other studies have found elevated water concentrations of multiple trace elements in Appalachia's mining-influenced streams.

Sulfidic schists are important rock formations due to their trace metal and metalloid (TMM) content and carry the potential for pyrite and pyrrhotite to hydrate and oxidize leading to acid-enhanced chemical weathering. The objectives of this study were to compare TMMs in sulfidic schists to other co-occurring bedrock, evaluate conditions that optimize TMM rock weathering, and examine streamwater TMMs in relation to bedrock lithology and human development in eleven streams across central Massachusetts. Sulfidic schists samples had the highest As (72 ± 46 mg kg), Cu (63 ± 21 mg kg), and Pb (63 ± 33 mg kg) concentrations.

Scholars and policy makers rely on the theory of procedural justice (PJ) to further the twin goals of improving police-civilian relations and reducing crime. Substantial PJ research demonstrates that civilians evaluate fairness in police-civilian interactions based on voice, neutrality, trust, and respect. Although social identity is an important predictor and outcome of PJ, little research has examined how police officers, who have a unique social identity and sub-culture, evaluate fairness.
