Background and objective The treatment of early-stage laryngeal glottic cancer involves surgery or radiotherapy, and both have similar survival rates. However, discrepancies between systematic reviews in the literature point towards the continuous need for more data. In this study, we aimed to investigate the oncologic value of surgery at an ENT university department of a tertiary hospital in Greece.

This study aimed to explore the antioxidant potential of the ethyl acetate extract of Streptomyces coeruleofuscus SCJ strain, along with its inhibitory effects on the triple-negative human breast carcinoma cell line (MDA-MB-468). The ethyl acetate extract's total phenolic and flavonoid contents were quantified, and its antioxidant activity was investigated using DPPH (1,1-Diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl), ABTS (2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid), and FRAP (Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power) assays. Furthermore, the cytotoxic effect of the organic extract from Streptomyces coeruleofuscus SCJ on MDA-MB-468 cancer cells was assessed via the crystal violet assay.

Biofilm formation on food packaging surfaces is a major issue in the industry, as it leads to contamination, reduces shelf life, and poses risks to human health. To mitigate these effects, developing smart coatings that can actively sense and combat microbial growth has become a critical research focus. This study is motivated by the need for intelligent packaging solutions that integrate antimicrobial agents and sensors for real-time contamination detection.

J Cancer Educ

December 2024

Laboratory of Research in Health Sciences and Technologies, Higher Institute of Health Sciences, Hassan First University of Settat, BP 555, Settat, Morocco.

Article Synopsis
  • Cervical cancer represents a significant public health issue in Morocco, with 2,165 new cases and 1,199 deaths reported in 2020; despite the availability of the HPV vaccine since 2008, awareness among physicians is low.
  • A study involving 500 physicians revealed that only 36.6% were aware of the main HPV types linked to cervical cancer, and only 16.6% actively recommended the HPV vaccine, although over 63% expressed willingness to recommend it if aware.
  • Key factors influencing vaccine recommendation included physicians' age, work sector (with public sector doctors more likely to recommend it), and awareness of HPV types, vaccine schedules, and its commercial name, underlining gaps that need addressing

Association between trabecular bone score, 10-year probability risk for fracture, and vertebral fractures in rheumatoid arthritis.

Bone Rep

December 2024

Department of Rheumatology, Mohammed VI University Hospital of Oujda, Faculty of medicine and pharmacy, Mohammed First University, BP 4806 Oujda Université, 60049 Oujda, Morocco.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to evaluate how trabecular bone score (TBS), along with fracture risk assessment tools (FRAX), correlates with the occurrence of vertebral fractures in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
  • - Data were gathered from 69 RA patients, revealing that while TBS alone did not show a significant association with vertebral fractures, FRAX scores indicated a strong relationship.
  • - The results suggested that the MOF-FRAX score combined with bone mineral density (BMD) was the most reliable predictor for vertebral fractures in this group, outperforming TBS in terms of predictive value.

This case report details the management of a 60-year-old male who sustained a complex proximal humerus fracture with an axillary artery injury following a fall. Initial assessment revealed a fractured humeral head and complete occlusion of the axillary artery, which was repaired using a saphenous vein graft. Subsequently, the patient underwent reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RTSA) after the limb stabilized.

The threat of emerging viral outbreaks has increased the need for fast and effective development of therapeutics against emerging pathogens. One approach is to modify the structure of existing therapeutic agents to achieve the desired antiviral properties. Here, we attempted to synthesize a new antiviral compound by modifying the structure of chloroquine using the of the primary amine (N1,N1-diethylpentane-1,4-diamine) that is used in chloroquine synthesis.

Article Synopsis
  • Type C hepatic encephalopathy (Type C HE) is a neurological disorder resulting from chronic liver failure, presenting symptoms like mental confusion and motor difficulties.
  • The increase in Alzheimer type II astrocytes (AT2A) is a significant finding linked to Type C HE, though the development of AT2A and its role in cognitive impairments is still unclear.
  • Research in rats indicates that elevated oxidative stress, inflammation, and specific signaling pathways contribute to the rise of GMF and AT2A, leading to cognitive and motor deficits, suggesting potential targets for treatment.

Introduction And Importance: The clinical and radiological similarities between COVID-19 and lung cancer pose diagnostic challenges, particularly in young, non-smoking individuals. Ground glass opacities (GGO) on imaging, often associated with COVID-19, can also indicate lung cancer. Distinguishing between these conditions is crucial but complex, requiring a systematic approach.

In the context of designing innovative anticancer agents, the synthesis of a series of chalcones bearing a 3,4,5-trimethoxylated A ring and a variety of B rings, including phenols and original heterocycles such as chromones, was conducted. For this end, Claisen-Schmidt condensation was performed in basic or acidic conditions between the common starting material 3,4,5-trimethoxyacetophenone and appropriate aldehydes; this allowed the recovery of fifteen chalcones in moderate-good yields. The synthesized compounds were screened for their antiproliferative activity against colorectal and prostatic cancer cells, using a colorimetric MTT assay.
