: Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), associated with a significant burden on patients' lives, are becoming increasingly common. Patients with IBD need continuous treatment and lifelong monitoring, which could be achieved by telemonitoring. Telemonitoring has been shown to be effective in improving outcomes for patients with IBD, and can provide a more convenient and accessible way for patients to receive care.

Objective: Schwannomas of the first and second nerve roots are rare neurosurgical entities, harboring specific surgical features that make surgical resection particularly challenging and deserve specifics dissertations. This study is a retrospectively analysis of 14 patients operated in two different neurosurgical centers: the San Filippo Neri Hospital of Rome and the Federal Centre of Neurosurgery of Tjumen.

Materials And Methods: In the last 6 years, 14 patients underwent neurosurgical resection of high cervical (C1-C2) schwannomas, in two different neurosurgical centers.

Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) are rare, potentially life-threatening syndromes characterized by the development of necrotic epidermal and mucosal lesions. The most common etiologic cause of SJS/TEN is drug-induced mechanisms. The group of drugs with high potential risk includes sulfonamides, anticonvulsants, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), allopurinol, phenobarbital, etc.

Background: Treatment of small vestibular schwannomas (VS) depends on size, growth pattern, age, symptoms, co-morbidities. Watchful waiting, stereotactic radiosurgery and microsurgery are three valid options of treatment.

Methods: We reviewed clinical sheets, surgical data and results of 100 consecutive patients with Koos Grade I-II VS, operated at our department via a retrosigmoid microsurgical approach between September 2010 and July 2021.

Glutamate excitotoxicity is involved in the pathogenesis of many disorders, including stroke, traumatic brain injury, and Alzheimer's disease, for which central insulin resistance is a comorbid condition. Neurotoxicity of glutamate (Glu) is primarily associated with hyperactivation of the ionotropic N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors (NMDARs), causing a sustained increase in intracellular free calcium concentration ([Ca]) and synchronous mitochondrial depolarization and an increase in intracellular superoxide anion radical (O) production. Recently, we found that insulin protects neurons against excitotoxicity by decreasing the delayed calcium deregulation (DCD).

Vestibular schwannoma (VS) is a benign tumor which develops in the internal auditory canal and the cerebellopontine angle, potentially diminishing hearing or balance. Most VS tumors arise from one of two vestibular branches: the superior or inferior vestibular nerve. Determining the specific nerve of origin could improve patient management in terms of preoperative counseling, treatment selection, and surgical decision-making and planning.

Inflammatory Pseudotumor Simulating a Jugular Foramen Meningioma: Case Report, Technical Video, and Literature Review.

World Neurosurg

Division of Neurosurgery, Department of Surgical Specialties, San Filippo Neri Hospital/ASL Roma 1, Rome, Italy; Department of Neurosurgery, The State Education Institution of Higher Professional Training, The First Sechenov Moscow State Medical University Under Ministry of Health, Moscow, Russian Federation. Electronic address:

Inflammatory pseudotumor (IP) is a nonneoplastic, reactive inflammatory process, of unknown etiology, characterized by a proliferation of connective tissue with an inflammatory infiltrate, most commonly involving the lungs and orbits. Primary intracranial IP is an extremely rare entity often arising from the meningeal structures of the skull base. We reported an extremely rare case of a primary intracranial IP located in the cerebellopontine angle, mimicking a jugular foramen meningioma.

Background: Several anti-cytokine therapies were tested in the randomized trials in hospitalized patients with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection (COVID-19). Previously, dexamethasone demonstrated a reduction of case-fatality rate in hospitalized patients with respiratory failure. In this matched control study we compared dexamethasone to a Janus kinase inhibitor, ruxolitinib.

Congenital hypopituitarism is a rare disease. It can be caused by isolated inborn defects of the pituitary, gene mutations (PROP1, PIT1), and chromosomal abnormalities.Deletions of chromosome 18 (De Grouchy syndrome types 1 and 2) are a group of rare genetic diseases with a frequency of 1:50,000.

In 10-15% of cases of vestibular schwannoma (VS), age at diagnosis is 40 years or less. Little is known about the differences in natural history, surgical findings, and postoperative outcomes of such younger patients as compared to those of greater age. To analyze clinical and surgical and imaging data of a consecutive series of n = 50 patients with unilateral sporadic VS, aged 40 years or younger - separated in a very young group (15-30 years) and a moderately young group (31-40 years).

The extreme lateral infrajugular transcondylar-transtubercular exposure (ELITE) is a surgical approach developed in the late 1980s by Prof. T. Fukushima and represents the dorsolateral inferior skull base procedure of choice to approach lesion located ventrolaterally at the level of the craniocervical junction (CCJ).

The possibilities of using optical spectroscopy methods in the differential diagnosis of prostate cancer were investigated. Analytical discrimination models of Raman spectra of prostate tissue were constructed by using the projections onto latent structures data analysis(PLS-DA) method for different wavelengths of exciting radiation-532 and 785 nm. These models allowed us to divide the Raman spectra of prostate cancer and the spectra of hyperplasia sites for validation datasets with the accuracy of 70-80%, depending on the specificity value.

Koos grade IV vestibular schwannomas (VS) (maximum diameter > 3 cm) compress the brainstem and displace the fourth ventricle. Microsurgical resection with attention to the right balance between preservation of function and maximal tumor removal is the treatment of choice. Our series consists of 60 consecutive patients with unilateral VS, operated on from December 2010 to July 2019.

Background: Permanent hearing loss after posterior fossa microvascular decompression (MVD) for typical trigeminal neuralgia (TTN) is one of the possible complications of this procedure. Intraoperative brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) are used for monitoring the function of cochlear nerve during cerebellopontine angle (CPA) microsurgery. Level-specific (LS)-CE-Chirp® BAEPs are the most recent evolution of classical click BAEP, performed both in clinical studies and during intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) of acoustic pathways during several neurosurgical procedures.

Dumbbell-shaped thoracic tumors usually arise from neurogenic elements within the spinal canal and are characterized by involvement of both spinal canal and posterior thoracic cavity. The tumor mass becomes frequently very large growing inside and outside of the spinal canal, through the connection of the neural foramen, involving the surrounding structures. Most of the dumbbell tumors are peripheral nerve sheath tumors, of which neurofibromas and schwannomas represent the vast majority.

Glutamate (Glu) excitotoxicity, which accompanies brain ischemia or traumatic brain injury, is the leading mechanism of neuronal death. In the present work, we studied the effects of the peptides HFRWPGP (ACTHPGP), KKRRPG, and PyrRP on the survival of cultured cortical neurons on the background of excitotoxic effect of Glu (100 µM). Biochemical (MTT/WST) and morphometric analyzes showed that, depending on the dose, ACTHPGP and KKRRPGP protect neurons from the cells death, while PyrRP, conversely, enhances it.
