Article Synopsis
  • Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a condition marked by high blood sugar levels due to inadequate insulin production, requiring patients to undergo long-term treatment with existing hypoglycemic drugs, which are often ineffective for managing the disease.
  • Traditional weight loss surgeries, like gastric bypass, have strict BMI requirements and can lead to complications such as hypoglycemia and dumping syndrome, reducing their effectiveness for DM treatment.
  • Jejunoileostomy is a newer surgical option showing promise for improving glucose and lipid metabolism without altering the gastrointestinal structure, resulting in fewer complications and better management of DM-related issues, supported by clinical consensus on its surgical and postoperative management.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluated the effectiveness of pegylated liposomal doxorubicin (PLD) compared to other anthracyclines like epirubicin and pirarubicin in neoadjuvant chemotherapy for breast cancer patients with HR ⩽ 10% and HER2-negative status.
  • Results showed that PLD had a significantly higher pathological complete response (pCR) rate (34.1%) compared to epirubicin (20.8%), indicating a better immediate treatment response.
  • However, when looking at long-term outcomes, like event-free survival (EFS) and overall survival (OS), there were no statistically significant differences across the treatment groups, suggesting PLD is as effective as its counterparts

Objective: Hormone receptor (HR)-low/HER2-negative breast cancers (BCs) are more likely to be basal-like BCs, with similar molecular features and gene expression profiles to HR-negative (estrogen receptor <1% or negative and progesterone receptor <1% or negative) BCs. Recently, with the clinical application of adjuvant intensive therapy for triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), the prognosis of TNBC patients without pathological complete response (pCR) has significantly improved. Therefore, it is necessary to reanalyse the prognostic characteristics of clinically high-risk HR-low/HER2-negative BC.

Bifidobacterium modulation of tumor immunotherapy and its mechanism.

Cancer Immunol Immunother

April 2024

Hubei Key Laboratory of Tumor Biological Behaviors, Department of Radiation Oncology and Medical Oncology, Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University, Hubei Cancer Clinical Study Center, Wuhan, China.

The advent of tumor immunotherapy in patients has revolutionized the treatment of tumors and significantly improved survival rates for a wide range of tumors. However, the full therapeutic potential of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) has yet to be realized, as not all patients have a lasting survival benefit from them, and a significant proportion of patients show primary or acquired resistance to immunotherapy. Bifidobacterium is one of the most common probiotics, and its antitumor and immunomodulatory effects have been demonstrated in recent years, but its immunomodulatory effects in tumors, especially on ICIs and in combination, have not been extensively studied in clinical practice, and its effects on the immune system and the mechanisms that modulate immunotherapy are largely unknown.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the prevalence of morphometric vertebral fractures (VFs) in patients newly diagnosed with Cushing disease (CD) and compares them to a control group without pituitary disorders.
  • Results showed a significantly higher prevalence of VFs in the CD patients (58.7%) compared to controls (14.5%), with a notable portion having moderate to severe fractures.
  • Elevated serum cortisol levels were identified as an independent predictor for VFs, suggesting that these fractures could be an early indication of Cushing disease progression and warrant assessment during diagnosis.
