Background Aims: Dendritic cell (DC)-based immunotherapy has recently been reported frequently in the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC); however, its efficacy remains controversial. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the clinical efficacy of DC-based immunotherapy on HCC by conducting a systematic review and meta-analysis.
Methods: PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase and Web of Science were searched to identify clinical trials on DC-based immunotherapy for HCC published up to January 31, 2018.

Pre-B-cell leukemia homeobox 3 (PBX3) is upregulated in various malignancies; however, the role of PBX3 in cervical cancer (CC) is unknown. The purpose of this study was to explore the expression characteristics, clinicopathological significance, and molecular biological function of PBX3 in CC. The expression levels of PBX3 were analyzed in CC cell lines and tumor specimens by real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), Western blotting, and immunohistochemical staining.

Tongue squamous cell carcinoma (TSCC) is the most common oral squamous cell carcinoma. Despite significant advances in combined therapies, the 5-year survival rate of patients with TSCC has not notably improved; this is due to regional recurrences and lymph node metastasis. Grape seed proanthocyanidins (GSPs) are consumed as dietary supplements worldwide and possess anticancer activity against several different types of cancer.

The PIWI-like protein 1 (PIWIL1) plays a crucial role in stem cell proliferation, embryogenesis, growth, and development, as well as differentiation and maturation in multiple organisms. The relationships between PIWIL1 expression and clinicopathological features of colorectal cancer (CRC) patients were analyzed by us. Survival analysis was performed using the Kaplan-Meier method and Cox's proportional hazards model.

Background: In Streptococcus mutans, ComCDE, a peptide-induced two-component signal transduction system, forms a closed signal transduction, and even if difunctional ComE closes this signal at its headstream to avoid its infinite amplification, it is not enough for ComE to work in a concentration-dependent manner. CslAB has a chance to regulate ComCDE by controlling extracellular competence-stimulating peptide (CSP) concentration through its processing and secretion.
Objectives: To first confirm the binding properties of cslAB promoter (PcslAB) with ComE, then to uncover in vivo need of cslAB expression, and finally to unveil the role of CslAB.

Purulent meningitis (PM) is a severe infectious disease that is associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality. It has been recognized that bacterial infection is a major contributing factor to the pathogenesis of PM. However, there is a lack of information on the bacterial composition in PM, due to the low positive rate of cerebrospinal fluid bacterial culture.

Objective: The stable quality of Chinese herbal medicines is a critical factor for their reliable clinical efficiency. An improved liquid-liquid extraction procedure and a liquid chromatographic method were developed to simultaneously analyze five anthraquinones (aloe-emodin, rhein, emodin, chrysophanol and physcion) in a Chinese traditional hospital preparation, Fuyankang mixture, in order to quantitatively control its quality in a more effective way.
Methods: A more economical and repeatable extraction procedure based on conventional liquid-liquid extraction technique was developed and used to extract five marker components in Fuyankang mixture.

Matrine, a major alkaloid extracted from Sophora flavescens, has been reported to possess antitumor properties in several types of cancers, including gastric cancer. However, its mechanisms of action on gastric cancer remain poorly understood. Dysregulation of microRNAs, a class of small, non-coding, regulatory RNA molecules involved in gene expression, is strongly correlated with cancer.

Gastric cancer is one of the most common cancers in China. Although surgery is the primary therapeutic method, radiotherapy has become an integral part, particularly in the early and intermediate stages of gastric cancer. microRNAs (miRNAs) are involved in the regulation of diverse cellular processes in response to intrinsic and extrinsic stress.

Dysregulated miRNAs in gastric cancer are usually screened by miRNA microarray from clinical samples, however, reports have indicated that results of each miRNA microarray screening are considerably different, and dysregulated miRNAs, especially downregulated miRNAs were contradictory. In view of this, the Human Cancer Pathway Finder miRNA PCR array was applied to compare 7 gastric cancer cell lines AGS, SGC-7901, MKN-45, MKN-28, MGC-803, BCG-823, and HGC-27 with an immortalized normal gastric cell line, GES-1 in cancer pathway-related miRNA expression profile, followed by qPCR verification, the clinical significance of downregulated miRNAs and the Enriched KEGG pathways and GO terms of their target genes were analyzed. Thirty-eight miRNAs were upregulated, and four miRNAs were downregulated in gastric cancer cell lines.

Objective: To explore the relationship between chronic prostatitis (CP) and prostatic calculus (PC).
Methods: We used transperineal ultrasonography (TPUS) to detect PC in 500 normal volunteers and 491 CP patients, and divided them into a CP and a CP + PC group according to the ultrasonographic results. Then we analyzed the NIH-CPSI scores, duration of symptoms and white blood cell count in the expressed prostate secretion (ESP).

Objective: To investigate the effect of oral sodium selenite and vitamin E on thyroid hormones in patients with cardiovascular disease at altitude.
Methods: Ninety patients with cardiovascular disease were divided into A group (n = 42, sodium selenite + VE), B group (n = 28, sodium selenite only) and control group (n = 20). Serum selenium (Se), plasma glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), plasma malondialdehyde (MDA) and serum T(3) and T(4) were determined before and after 6 month treatment.
