At the heart of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) lies disruption of signaling pathways at the level of molecules, genes, and cells. Non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) have been implicated in the disease progression of HCC. For instance, dysregulated expression of circular RNAs (circRNAs) has been observed in patients with HCC.

An accumulation of evidence has demonstrated that abnormal microRNA (miRNA or miR) expression is associated with different types of cancer, including endometrial cancer (EC). The dysregulation of miRNAs may serve important roles in the development and progression of EC by regulating multiple aggressive biological behaviors, including cell proliferation, apoptosis, metastasis and angiogenesis. An in-depth understanding of the miRNAs associated with EC initiation and progression may be crucial for identifying successful therapeutic techniques.

High disappointment rate of the ligament to hard tissue mending after the medical procedure has dependably been a testing issue in rotator cuff repair. Considering the elasticity of carbon dot decorated polyethylene (f-CDs-PE) and osteogenic movement of gold substituted hydroxyapatite (Au@HA) bioceramic, f-CDs-PE-Au@HA biocomposite coatings were created by an electrophoretic deposition method (EPD), the in vivo and in vitro bioactivity and cytocompatibility were researched. The physico-chemical properties of f-CDs-PE-Au@HA biocomposite coatings were characterized using fourier transform infra-red (FTIR) and X-Ray diffractometery (XRD).

Abnormal expression of microRNA (miR)-219-3p has been widely identified in different tumors. However, whether miR-219-3p is involved in the progression of hepatic fibrosis (HF) has never been explored. The present study showed that compared with healthy controls, the levels of miR-291-3p in peripheral blood were decreased in patients with HF.

Various protein kinases are implicated in the pathogenesis of human cervical cancer and many kinase inhibitors have been used to regulate the activity of protein kinases involved in the disease signaling networks. In the present study, a systematic kinase-inhibitor interactome is created for various small-molecule inhibitors across diverse cervical cancer-related kinases by using ontology enrichment, molecular docking, dynamics simulation and energetics analysis. The interactome profile is examined in detail with heatmap analysis and heuristic clustering to derive promising inhibitors that are highly potential to target the kinome of human cervical cancer in a multi-target manner.

Recent studies have highlighted the important roles of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in pancreatic adenocarcinoma (PCa) prognosis. However, most studies explored a limited number of lncRNAs based on small sample size. Systematic and comprehensive analysis of the data from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) was performed to identify a panel of lncRNA signature for predicting prognosis in PCa.

Diabetes mellitus is a serious disease endangering human health worldwide. Vitamin D (Vit D) is a well-characterized regulator of calcium-phosphorus metabolism that also exerts other biological effects extending far beyond mineral homeostasis. Some epidemiological studies have suggested that Vit D has a role in defense against diabetes, although the mechanism remains unclear.

Prognostic Value of Preoperative Systemic Immune-Inflammation Index in Patients with Cervical Cancer.

Sci Rep

March 2019

Department of obstetrics, The First People's Hospital of Kunshan, Jiangsu University, No. 91 West Qianjin Road, Suzhou, 215300, China.

The systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) based on peripheral lymphocyte, neutrophil and platelet counts has been considered a good index that reflects the local immune response and systemic inflammation. However, the use of the SII has not been reported in cervical cancer. In this study, Kaplan-Meier survival analysis showed that a high SII was associated with poor prognosis in cervical cancer patients in the primary and validation cohorts.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated the use of auditory cortical evoked potentials (ACEP) to assess the auditory capabilities of 126 patients with prelingual deafness who used auditory prostheses between 2012 and 2017.
  • Utilizing the HEARLab™ system, researchers measured the P1-N1-P2 waveform in response to specific sounds, finding higher extraction rates of P1 waves compared to N1 and P2.
  • Results indicated that younger age at the time of using an auditory prosthesis and shorter duration of deafness before its use led to stronger waveforms and longer P1 latencies, highlighting the importance of these factors in auditory assessment.

Background: Cancer is a serious public health problem worldwide, and difficulty in early diagnosis has been the chief obstacle to improve the prognosis of patients. Recently, microRNAs (miRNAs) were widely studied to be potential biomarkers for cancer detection. miR-16 is a prevalent but sophisticated one.

  • Interleukin 17 (IL-17) is a cytokine that is elevated in glioma patients, but its specific effects on glioma cell growth and movement were not well understood before this study.
  • The study found that IL-17 boosts both the growth and movement of glioma cells in laboratory settings and enhances tumor formation in mouse models.
  • Mechanistically, IL-17 activates signaling pathways involving PI3K, Akt1, and NF-ÎşB-p65, and inhibiting these pathways can reduce the stimulating effects of IL-17 on glioma cells.

miR-145 has been found to be significantly downregulated in gliomas, and overexpression of miR-145 increases glioma cell apoptosis and enhances chemosensitivity or herpes simplex virus thymidine kinase gene therapy. However, the correlation between miR-145 and the clinical prognosis of glioblastomas has never been explored. In this study, a retrospective study was conducted in 86 cases of patients with glioblastoma after neurosurgery combined with chemoradiotherapy, and 36 cases with traumatic brain injury.

Background/aims: Early screening and diagnosis is important for minimizing gestational adverse outcomes. Routine screening of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) at 24-28 weeks with 75 g oral glucose challenge test (OGCT) leaves limited time for intervention and prevention. This study aims to analyze maternal serum peptides in the early second-trimester for prediction of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM).
