BACKGROUND Salvianolic acid B (SB) is a major active phyto-component of the plant Radix Salvia miltiorrhiza, which is traditionally used to treat joint pain and arthritis. The present study examined the anti-rheumatoid arthritis efficacy of SB on collagen-induced rheumatoid arthritis (CIA) in a rat model. MATERIAL AND METHODS Forty-eight rats were divided into 4 groups: Control rats treated with saline (Group I), rats subjected to CIA induction by intradermal injection of bovine collagen II type at the tail (Group II), and rats subjected to CIA and supplemented with either 20 or 40 mg/kg of SB for 28 days (group III or IV).

Deregulated microRNAs (miRs) and their roles in carcinogenesis have attracted great attention in recent years. Although miR-204 was reportedly dysregulated in various types of cancer, its function and mechanism in cervical cancer remain unknown. The present study focused on the expression and mechanisms of miR-204 in cervical cancer development.

Hypoxia treatment enhances paracrine effect of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). The aim of this study was to investigate whether exosomes from hypoxia-treated MSCs (Exo) are superior to those from normoxia-treated MSCs (Exo) for myocardial repair. Mouse bone marrow-derived MSCs were cultured under hypoxia or normoxia for 24 h, and exosomes from conditioned media were intramyocardially injected into infarcted heart of C57BL/6 mouse.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common joint disorder and affects approximately half of the aged population. Current treatments for OA are largely palliative until the articular cartilage has been deeply damaged and irreversible morphological changes appear. Thus, effective methods are needed for diagnosing and monitoring the progression of OA during its early stages when therapeutic drugs or biological agents are most likely to be effective.

Suppression of the biological activity of neuroglioma cells by down-regulation of miR-1.

Genet Mol Res

August 2017

Department of Neurosurgery, The First People's Hospital of Huzhou, The First Affiliated Hospital of Huzhou University, Huzhou, Zhejiang Province, China

Neuroglioma is associated with high rates of malignancy, metastasis, and recurrence. Recently, research on the roles of microRNAs (miR) in cancer prognosis has formed an important area of research as differential expression of miRNAs has been observed in different cancers. However, the detailed mechanism by which miRNAs regulate glioma remains unknown.

Nitric oxide (NO) can induce necrosis and detachment of branchial epithelium, aggregate inflammation and induce acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). The detection of NO in exhaled breath condensate (EBC) has not been widely applied in evaluating ARDS condition. This study thus tested NO in EBC of ARDS patients, in order to provide non-invasive method to monitor disease condition of ARDS.

Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery, The First Affiliated Hospital, Huzhou Teachers College, The First People's Hospital of Huzhou, Huzhou, Zhejiang 313000, P.R. China.

The identification of novel survival predictors may help to improve the appropriate management of colorectal cancer (CRC). In the present study, two gene sets associated with irinotecan or oxaliplatin resistance in CRC cell lines were first identified and subsequently applied to the clinical CRC microarray dataset GSE14333. Subsequently, a 60-gene irinotecan resistance-associated signature and a 13-gene oxaliplatin resistance-associated signature were established, which were able to classify CRC patients into high- and low-risk subgroups with varied clinical outcomes [irinotecan-resistance gene signature: hazard ratio (HR)=0.

Stem cell therapy for ischemic heart diseases.

Br Med Bull

January 2017

Department of Cardiology, Second Affiliated Hospital, College of Medicine, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, 310009, P.R. China.

Introduction: Ischemic heart diseases, especially the myocardial infarction, is a major hazard problem to human health. Despite substantial advances in control of risk factors and therapies with drugs and interventions including bypass surgery and stent placement, the ischemic heart diseases usually result in heart failure (HF), which could aggravate social burden and increase the mortality rate. The current therapeutic methods to treat HF stay at delaying the disease progression without repair and regeneration of the damaged myocardium.

Hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (HIF-1) is an important transcription factor that induces adaptive responses upon low oxygen conditions in human cancers and triggers off a poor prognostic outcome of conventional treatments. In this study, we discovered for the first time that brusatol (BRU), a quassinoid extracted from Brucea Esters, has the capability to inhibit HIF-1 signaling pathway. We found that BRU concentration-dependently down-regulated HIF-1α protein levels under hypoxia or CoCl-induced mimic hypoxia in HCT116 cells without causing significant cytotoxicity.
