NT3 treatment alters spinal cord injury-induced changes in the gray matter volume of rhesus monkey cortex.

Sci Rep

April 2022

Beijing Key Laboratory for Biomaterials and Neural Regeneration, Beijing Advanced Innovation Center for Biomedical Engineering, School of Biological Science and Medical Engineering, Beihang University, Beijing, 100083, China.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) may cause structural alterations in brain due to pathophysiological processes, but the effects of SCI treatment on brain have rarely been reported. Here, voxel-based morphometry is employed to investigate the effects of SCI and neurotrophin-3 (NT3) coupled chitosan-induced regeneration on brain and spinal cord structures in rhesus monkeys. Possible association between brain and spinal cord structural alterations is explored.

Autoimmune encephalitis is a heterogeneous group of newly identified disorders that are being diagnosed with increasing frequency. Early recognition and treatment of autoimmune encephalitis are crucial for patients, but diagnosis remains challenging and time-consuming. In this retrospective case series, we describe the findings of conventional MR imaging and 3D pseudocontinuous arterial spin-labeling in patients with autoimmune encephalitis confirmed by antibody testing.

Emerging infectious diseases, such as COVID-19, continue to pose significant threats to human beings and their surroundings. In addition, biological warfare, bioterrorism, biological accidents, and harmful consequences arising from dual-use biotechnology also pose a challenge for global biosecurity. Improving the early surveillance capabilities is necessary for building a common biosecurity shield for the global community of health for all.

Molecular analysis facilitates the prediction of overall survival (OS) of breast cancer and decision-making of the treatment plan. The current study was designed to identify new prognostic genes for breast cancer and construct an effective prognostic signature with integrated bioinformatics analysis. Differentially expressed genes in breast cancer samples from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) dataset were filtered by univariate Cox regression analysis.

The utility of unfolded structural proteins with diverse sequences offers multiple potentials to create functional biomaterials. However, it is challenging to overcome their structural defects for the development of biological fibers with a combination of high strength and high toughness. Herein, robust fibers from a recombinant unfolded protein consisting of resilin and supercharged polypeptide are fabricated via wet-spinning approaches.

Background: The aim of this study was to analyze the clinical efficacy of different thoracoscopic procedures in patients with non-small cell lung cancer and their correlation with matrix metalloproteinase-7 mRNA (MMPs-7 mRNA) and soluble major histocompatibility complex class I molecule A (sMICA), as well as their effect on T-cell subsets.

Methods: A total of 100 patients with non-small cell lung cancer who received different thoracoscopic surgeries were divided into the Control group (three-port thoracoscopic surgery) and the study group (single-port thoracoscopic surgery). The two groups were evaluated to compare the perioperative indicators, MMPs-7 mRNA, sMICA expression levels, T-cell subsets, postoperative pain, complication rates, and prognostic outcomes at 1-year follow-up.

Background/aim: The development of colon cancer is influenced by the tumour immune microenvironment, in which specific immune cell subsets may be useful predictors for patient's clinical outcome and devising treatment strategies.

Materials And Methods: The distribution of tumour-infiltrating immune cell subpopulations of three cohorts of The Cancer Genome Atlas (n=225), GSE39582 (n=493), and GSE17536 (n=137) datasets were analysed on the basis of single cell RNA sequencing data via the Cibersortx software. A prognostic model was constructed via a penalised Cox regression model with least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) penalty according to the one standard error rule.

Objective: High-risk papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) patients with BRAF mutation have lymph node and distant metastases and poor prognosis. Therefore, this study aims to develop a targeted ultrasound contrast agent for the BRAF mutation to screen high-risk PTC at early stage.

Methods: The targeted lipid nanobubbles carrying BRAF antibody were prepared using thin film hydration-sonication and avidin-biotin binding methods.

Glioblastoma (GBM) is the deadliest primary brain tumor and is generally resistant to immunotherapy because of severe dysfunction of T cells. Novel treatment options are critically needed to overcome the immunotherapy resistance of GBM. Here we demonstrate that Zika virus (ZIKV) treatment improves the efficacy of anti-PD ligand 1 (PD-L1) immunotherapy in GBM.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the effects of caprylic acid (C8:0) on lipid metabolism and inflammation, and examine the mechanisms underlying these effects in mice and cells.

Methods: Fifty-six 6-week-old male C57BL/6J mice were randomly allocated to four groups fed a high-fat diet (HFD) without or with 2% C8:0, palmitic acid (C16:0) or eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). RAW246.

Endoscopists have been at increased risk because of their direct contact with patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. For patients, being diagnosed with and monitored for gastrointestinal cancer and digestive diseases in timely fashion has been challenging, given pandemic-related adjustments in endoscopy departments. We developed a novel noncontact magnetically controlled capsule endoscopy (ncMCE) system in our medical center.

The widely used surface-based biomolecule sensing scheme has greatly facilitated the investigation of protein-protein interactions in lab-on-a-chip microfluidic systems. However, in most biosensing schemes, the interactions are driven in a passive way: The overall sensing time and sensitivity are totally dependent on the Brownian diffusion process, which has greatly hindered their efficiency, especially at low concentration levels or single-molecule analysis. To break this limitation, we developed an all-optical active method termed optothermophoretic flipping (OTF).

Sodium MRI at 7T for Early Response Evaluation of Intracranial Tumors following Stereotactic Radiotherapy Using the CyberKnife.

AJNR Am J Neuroradiol

February 2022

State Key Laboratory of Brain and Cognitive Science (Z. Zou., X.C., Z.W., Y. Z., Z. Zhang.), Institute of Biophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China.

Background And Purpose: Conventionally, early treatment response to stereotactic radiotherapy in intracranial tumors is often determined by structural MR imaging. Tissue sodium concentration is altered by cellular integrity and energy status in cells. In this study, we aimed to investigate the feasibility of sodium MR imaging at 7T for the preliminary evaluation of radiotherapeutic efficacy for intracranial tumors.

Transcriptome analysis of the effect of a novel human serine protease inhibitor SPINK13 on gene expression in MHCC97-H cells.

Transl Cancer Res

October 2021

Department of Laboratory Medicine, School of Pharmacy and Medical Technology, Putian University, Putian, China.

Background: Serine peptidase inhibitor, Kazal type 13 (SPINK13) (also known as hespinter) is a low-molecular-weight inhibitor of uPA that was discovered in 2006. It was detected in prokaryotic cells in 2013 for the first time and preliminarily shown to inhibit hepG2 liver cancer cells growth in 2015. In this study, the differentially transcribed genes of MHCC97-H cells caused by SPINK13 treatment were studied by transcriptomics and the molecular mechanism of SPINK13 suppressing tumor cells was proposed using bioinformatics.

Li-Fraumeni syndrome (LFS), a rare autosomal-dominant inheritance condition, is associated with a family cancer history as well as pathogenic/likely-pathogenic TP53 germline variants (P/LP TP53 GV). The current clinical methods for detecting LFS are limited. Here, we retrospectively investigate P/LP TP53 GV among Chinese cancer patients by next-generation sequencing and evaluate its relationship with a family cancer history.
