Genetic factors may be involved in postoperative atrial fibrillation (PoAF) development and cardiac injury. However, the associations of the apolipoprotein E (ApoE) gene polymorphisms with PoAF and cardiac injury after coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG) remain unclear. We recruited 150 patients with CABG, comprising 92 and 58 cases for the ApoE4 and ApoE3 groups, respectively, and analyzed PoAF incidence and the levels of cardiac biomarkers, including N-terminal prohormone of brain natriuretic peptide, cardiac troponin T (cTnT), and cardiac troponin I (cTnI).

Inhibition of excessive autophagy alleviates renal injury and inflammation in a rat model of immunoglobulin A nephropathy.

Eur J Pharmacol

December 2023

Department of Nephrology, Xiyuan Hospital, China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, Beijing, 100091, China. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Immunoglobulin A nephropathy (IgAN) is a kidney disease linked to immune responses and inflammation, making its prognosis and treatment difficult to establish due to its diverse clinical presentations.
  • The study focused on how autophagy, a cellular process that helps with maintenance and repair, changes over time in a rat model of IgAN, revealing persistent activation of autophagy and inflammation.
  • By using an autophagy enhancer and inhibitor, the results indicated that blocking autophagy with 3-methyladenine reduced kidney damage and inflammation, suggesting that targeting autophagy could be a potential treatment for IgAN.

An in silico analysis of unsteady flow structures in a microaxial blood pump under a pulsating rotation speed.

Comput Methods Programs Biomed

January 2024

Applied Mechanics Laboratory, Department of Engineering Mechanics, School of Aerospace Engineering, Tsinghua University, Beijing, PR China. Electronic address:

Background And Objective: Ventricular assist devices (VADs) are generally designed to perform continuous flow. However, it has been proven that continuous flow, which is not a physiological hemodynamic state, may cause severe complications such as gastrointestinal bleeding, pulmonary hypertension, and ventricular suction. For these reasons, many pulsating blood pump control strategies have been proposed and have the potential for application in percutaneous ventricular assist devices (pVADs) or microaxial blood pumps.

Background: In China, the number of preterm infants is the second largest globally. Compared with those in developed countries, the mortality rate and proportion of treatment abandonment for extremely preterm infants (EPIs) are higher in China. It would be valuable to conduct a multicenter study and develop predictive models for the mortality risk.

The pedicled or free nasal mucosal flap is typically used to repair the exposed bone surface to avoid or reduce recurrence.

Objective: This study aimed to explore the histopathological mechanism of mucosal flaps repairing bare bone after mucosal resection and bone drill-out in the rabbit model.

This study aimed to identify whether there are elevations or declines in specific plasma lipids in intertrochanteric fracture (ITF) patients which might serve as potential biomarkers for assessing the severity of trauma, or therapeutic targets for controlling post-traumatic responses. Ten metal work removal patients were enrolled. Their preoperative blood samples served as the control group (C group).

Background: Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) is an established treatment option for heart failure patients. However, the implementation of triple-chamber pacemakers can be cost-prohibitive. His-Purkinje system pacing (HPSP) can also enable cardiac resynchronization, and it can be achieved with relatively inexpensive conventional pacemakers.

Overexpressed SIRT6 ameliorates doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity and potentiates the therapeutic efficacy through metabolic remodeling.

Acta Pharm Sin B

June 2023

The Ministry of Education Key Laboratory of Protein Science, School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Tsinghua University, Beijing 100084, China.

Since the utilization of anthracyclines in cancer therapy, severe cardiotoxicity has become a major obstacle. The major challenge in treating cancer patients with anthracyclines is minimizing cardiotoxicity without compromising antitumor efficacy. Herein, histone deacetylase SIRT6 expression was reduced in plasma of patients treated with anthracyclines-based chemotherapy regimens.

High expression of peroxisomal D-bifunctional protein in cytosol regulates apoptosis and energy metabolism of hepatocellular carcinoma cells via PI3K/AKT pathway.

Am J Cancer Res

May 2023

Ministry of Education Key Laboratory of Neural and Vascular Biology, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Hebei Medical University Shijiazhuang, Hebei, China.

Peroxisomal D-bifunctional protein (DBP) is an indispensable enzyme of the fatty acid β-oxidation in the peroxisome of humans. However, the role of DBP in oncogenesis is poorly understood. Our previous studies have demonstrated that DBP overexpression promotes hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cell proliferation.

Protection of laryngeal mucosa and function in laryngeal burns by heat absorption of perilaryngeal tissue.

Eur Arch Otorhinolaryngol

October 2023

Department of Burns, Beijing Jishuitan Hospital, Xinjiekoudongjie Street 31, Xicheng District, Beijing, 100035, People's Republic of China.

Objective: The laryngeal tissue carries most of the heat during inhalation injury. This study aims to explore the heat transfer process and the severity of injury inside laryngeal tissue by horizontally studying the temperature rise process at various anatomical layers of the larynx and observing the thermal damage in various parts of the upper respiratory tract.

Methods: The 12 healthy adult beagles were randomly divided into four groups, and inhaled room temperature air (control group), dry hot air of 80 °C (group I), 160 °C (group II), and 320 °C (group III) for 20 min, respectively.

Background: Changes in vascular function are closely associated with the development of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Pulse wave velocity (PWV) is a potential indicator of vascular dysfunction; it allows noninvasive assessment of arterial stiffness. Currently, evidence for the effects of different classes of antidiabetic drugs on arterial stiffness remains limited.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate how neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (NCRT) impacts the survival rates of patients with early-stage esophageal cancer (ESCA) and to create a prognostic tool (nomogram) for their treatment outcomes.
  • Researchers used data from the SEER database (2004-2015), applying statistical methods to identify risk factors and analyze survival outcomes between two treatment groups: one receiving NCRT plus surgery and the other receiving surgery alone.
  • Results showed that while NCRT had a short-term survival advantage, long-term outcomes (after 6 months) were worse for patients receiving NCRT, especially in terms of cancer-specific survival, leading to the development of a predictive nomogram for future patient

Objectives To learn the echocardiography skills of intensivists after receiving a basic critical care echocardiography training course, and investigate factors that may influence their performance. Methods We completed a web-based questionnaire that assessed the skills in ultrasound scanning techniques of intensivists who took a training course on basic critical care echocardiography held in 2019 and 2020. Mann-Whitney test was used to analyze the factors which might affect their performance on image acquisition, recognizing clinical syndrome, and measuring the diameter of inferior vena cava, left ventricular ejection fraction and left ventricular outflow tract velocity-time integral.
