Purpose: The purpose of this study was to quantitatively evaluate the branching patterns and vascular fragmentation features in preclinical and early diabetic retinopathy (DR) using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA).

Methods: OCTA metrics, including branch node number (BNN), branch node density (BND), end point number (EPN), end point density (EPD), fragmented vessel segment count (FVSC), and fragmented vascular length ratio (FVLR), were measured in foveal and parafoveal regions within superficial and deep vascular plexus (SVP and DVP) in the retina.

Results: Compared to healthy control (HCs), both BNN and BND exhibited a significant decrease in individuals with mild DR across both retinal layers, and also in diabetes mellitus without DR (no DR) within DVP.

Langenbecks Arch Surg

December 2024

Department of Interventional Treatment, First Hospital of Qinhuangdao, No.258 Wenhua Road, Qinhuangdao, Hebei, 066099, China.

Background: Malignant biliary obstruction is usually attributed to the enlargement of tumors within or adjacent to the biliary tract, leading to blockage or compression of the bile ducts. Common causes include pancreatic head cancer, bile duct cancer, gallbladder cancer, liver cancer, and metastatic diseases. Most cases have an insidious onset, lack effective early screening methods, and 70% of patients cannot undergo surgical resection, with a 5-year survival rate of about 30%.

Previous studies have reported an association between telomere length and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). This study aimed to explore the involvement of alternative lengthening of telomere-related genes (ALTRGs) in the pathology of NAFLD, construct a risk signature, and evaluate both treatment and prognosis. Three NAFLD datasets (GSE48452, GSE89632, and GSE63067) were collected from the GEO database and merged into combined GEO datasets.

Although serum uric acid (SUA) is a risk factor for cardiometabolic outcome, but it remains unclear which patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) benefit the most from SUA lowering therapy (ULT). The association of SUA level, systemic inflammation and cardiometabolic risk is still unclear. The current study is aimed to examine whether SUA-associated cardiometabolic risk is modulated by systemic inflammation in CAD patients.

  • A study explored the effectiveness of a deep learning (DL) algorithm for automatic segmentation of DCE-MRI images in differentiating BI-RADS 4 breast lesions, comparing it to manual segmentation.
  • Involving 197 patients, the DL model demonstrated high consistency with manual methods (Dice coefficient of 0.84) and outperformed professional radiologists in predictive accuracy with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.85.
  • The DL model not only provided better diagnostic results but also significantly increased efficiency, reducing the time needed for segmentation by 83.2%, indicating a promising future for clinical use in breast cancer diagnosis.

Background: The optimal glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) target in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients remains controversial, especially in patients with concomitant coronary heart disease (CHD). This study aimed to investigate the correlation between baseline HbA1c and long-term prognosis in CHD patients with T2DM.

Methods: The study enrolled 6,839 CHD patients with T2DM and measured HbA1c at admission in a multicenter prospective observational cohort.

Functional mechanism and clinical implications of mir-1271-5p in pilon fracture healing processes.

J Orthop Surg Res

November 2024

Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, The Affiliated Hospital of Youjiang Medical University for Nationalities, No.18, Zhongshan 2nd Road, Youjiang District, Baise, 533000, Guangxi, China.

Background: Pilon fractures are challenging to treat and carry a risk of delayed healing. MicroRNA (miRNA) is closely associated with various diseases due to its ability to regulate gene expression. Consequently, this study aimed to examine the connection between miR-1271-5p expression levels and pilon fracture healing processes, while also exploring the underlying mechanisms.

Background: All-inside cruciate ligament reconstruction is an emerging technique for treating anterior cruciate ligament and posterior cruciate ligament injuries. The all-inside technique uses a 4-stranded graft made of a single tendon that wraps around itself. Four strands of the graft must be immobilized to form a closed loop, and the free ends of the graft must be attached using a suture technique.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to explore the protective effects of fortunellin against sepsis-induced acute kidney injury (AKI) and the mechanisms involved.
  • Experiments utilized human kidney cells and a mouse model to assess fortunellin's ability to enhance cell survival, reduce inflammation, and counteract oxidative damage.
  • Results indicated that fortunellin significantly mitigated inflammation and oxidative stress, likely by inhibiting the TLR4/NF-κB signaling pathway, highlighting its potential as a therapeutic agent for sepsis-induced AKI.

This study aims to develop and prospectively validate radiomic models based on MRI to predict lymphovascular invasion (LVI) status in patients with HER2-positive breast cancer. A total of 225 patients with HER2-positive breast cancer who preoperatively underwent breast MRI were selected, forming the training set (n = 99 LVI-positive, n = 126 LVI-negative). A prospective validation cohort included 130 patients with breast cancer from the Affiliated Zhongshan Hospital of Dalian University (n = 57 LVI-positive, n = 73 LVI-negative).

State Key Laboratory of Metastable Materials Science and Technology, Hebei Key Laboratory of Nano-biotechnology, Hebei Key Laboratory of Applied Chemistry, Yanshan University, Qinhuangdao 066004, China. Electronic address:

The side effects of small molecule chemotherapeutic drugs (SMCD) have brought great pain to the cancer patients. Many nanodrug carriers can relieve the shortcomings of SMCD, but they have complex synthesis processes and lack biodegradability. To overcome both problems, we synthesized a pH responsive biodegradable zwitterionic molecules (EK-D) by linking zwitterionic polypeptide (EK7) and dodecyl acrylate through a simple click reaction.

  • This study explored the relationship between BTK/YKL-40 levels and the severity of AQP4-IgG + NMOSD, aiming to find biomarkers that could be useful for monitoring the disease and assessing treatment.
  • Plasma YKL-40 levels in acute-phase NMOSD patients before treatment were notably higher compared to those after treatment, in remission, or in healthy individuals, indicating its role in disease severity.
  • The research found strong correlations between elevated YKL-40, BTK, and NF-κB levels with increased disability scores, suggesting these biomarkers could predict disease activity and treatment response in NMOSD patients.
