Article Synopsis
  • High-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) is studied for its effects on patients with acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD) compared to noninvasive ventilation (NIV).
  • Seven randomized controlled trials involving 481 patients showed no significant differences in arterial gas measurements (PaCO, PaO, SpO), mortality, or intubation rates between HFNC and NIV groups.
  • However, the HFNC group exhibited a lower respiratory rate and fewer complications than the NIV group, suggesting HFNC may be a safer option in managing these patients.

Background: As reported, long non-coding RNAs are a pivotal player in lung squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) progression. We noticed the remarkably upregulated transmembrane-4-l-six-family-19 antisense RNA 1 (TM4SF19-AS1) in LSCC and further demonstrated the function it played in LSCC and the possible molecular mechanism.

Methods: Via bioinformatics approach, we evaluated TM4SF19-AS1 and TM4SF19 levels in LSCC tissue, and real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) and Western blot revealed their mRNA and protein levels in LSCC cells.

Purpose: To determine whether the addition of metabolic parameters from fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (F-FDG PET/CT) scans to clinical factors could improve risk prediction models for radiotherapy-related esophageal fistula (EF) in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC).

Methods And Materials: Anonymized data from 185 ESCC patients (20 radiotherapy-related EF-positive cases) were collected, including pre-therapy PET/CT scans and EF status. In total, 29 clinical features and 15 metabolic parameters from PET/CT were included in the analysis, and a least absolute shrinkage and selection operator logistic regression model was used to construct a risk score (RS) system.

Article Synopsis
  • Pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) is studied for its effectiveness in helping patients recover from acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD), comparing early PR with standard care.
  • The analysis included 13 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) with 866 patients and focused on various health outcomes such as lung function and quality of life scores.
  • Results showed that while early PR improved physical performance and health-related quality of life (measured by 6-minute walk test, mMRC, SGRQ-total, and SF-36 physical), it did not have significant effects on lung function (FEV1% predicted), shortness of breath (borg dyspnea score), or mental health (SF-36 mental

Article Synopsis
  • Low-concentration oxygen therapy is a common treatment for COPD with Type II respiratory failure, and using high-flow nasal cannula oxygen (HFNC) could be beneficial for patients with hypercapnic respiratory failure, although more research is needed.
  • A review of four randomized controlled trials (RCTs) involving 329 patients found no significant differences in carbon dioxide and oxygen levels between the HFNC and conventional oxygen therapy groups.
  • The study's conclusion suggests caution in interpreting the results due to the limited number of studies and participants, as well as variability in measurements among different patient conditions.

Long non-coding (lnc) RNAs serve crucial functions in human cancers. However, the involvement of the lncRNA B4GALT1-antisense RNA 1 (AS1) in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) has not been extensively studied. Reverse transcription-quantitative PCR was performed to detect B4GALT1-AS1 levels in NSCLC tissues and cell lines.

miR-208b-5p inhibits invasion of non-small cell lung cancer through the STAT3 pathway by targeting interleukin-9.

Oncol Lett

July 2020

Department of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery, The First Hospital of Longyan City, Fujian Medical University, Longyan, Fujian 364000, P.R. China.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the role of miR-208b-5p in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and finds that its expression is reduced in NSCLC tissues and cell lines.
  • Experimentation showed that increasing miR-208b-5p levels hindered cancer cell growth and invasiveness by targeting interleukin-9 (IL-9).
  • The suppression of IL-9 by miR-208b-5p also affected the IL-9/STAT3 signaling pathway, further contributing to its anti-tumor effects in NSCLC cells.
