Primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) is the leading cause of irreversible blindness. Dysfunction of the trabecular meshwork (TM), resulting in decreased outflow of aqueous humor and increased intraocular pressure (IOP), plays an important role in the pathogenesis of POAG. However, the underlying mechanisms still remain unclear.

Depression is one of most common psychiatric disorders, and the detailed molecular mechanism remains to be fully elucidated. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is a critical neurotrophic factor that is decreased and closely involved in the development of depression. Noncoding RNAs are central regulators of cellular activities that modulate target genes.

The tumor necrosis factor receptor-associated protein 1 (TRAP1) is associated with the occurrence and development of various diseases, including inflammation and cancer. However, the role and mechanism of TRAP1 in the development of lung cancer need to be further explored. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the role of TRAP1 in the regulation of apoptosis by cisplatin and its special mechanism.

Tumour necrosis factor-α-induced protein-8-like-2 (TIPE2) has been associated with the progression of numerous cancers. Cisplatin, as a classical chemotherapy strategy for cancers, has been applied in non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) clinical therapy but bears the disadvantage of chemoresistance. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of TIPE2 in cisplatin resistance and illustrate the detailed molecular mechanism.

Growing evidence indicates that Angiomotin (Amot)-p130 and Amot-p80 have different physiological functions. We hypothesized that Amot-p130 is a tumor suppressor gene in breast cancer, in contrast with the canonical oncogenicity of Amot-p80 or total Amot. To clarify the role of Amot-p130 in breast cancer, we performed real-time quantitative PCR, western blotting, flow cytometry, microarray, immunofluorescence, immunoprecipitation, and tumor sphere-formation assays in vitro, as well as tumorigenesis and limited-dilution analysis in vivo.

Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) has been reported as an inflammatory cytokine in many inflammatory diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis and ischemic diseases. However, dynamic changes of MIF within the first 24 hours on admission and potential prognostic significance following ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) have been little known. In this study, we examined the dynamic change of MIF level and its potential diagnostic and prognostic value after the onset of STEMI.

Objective: To investigate the potential role of alpha1-adrenoceptor (α1-AR) in the pathogenesis of hepatorenal syndrome.
Methods: Hepatorenal syndrome was induced in male rats by intraperitoneal injection of D-galactosamine and orally treatment with α1-AR antagonist tamsulosin. Hyperresponsiveness of the renal artery contraction was evaluated by the laser-Doppler flowmetry and multimyograph system, while renal blood flow (cortical and medullary perfusion) was simultaneously measured.

The default mode network (DMN) is a complex dynamic network that is critical for understanding cognitive function. However, whether dynamic topological reconfiguration of the DMN occurs across different brain states, and whether this potential reorganization is associated with prior learning or experience is unclear. To better understand the temporally changing topology of the DMN, we investigated both nodal and global dynamic DMN-topology metrics across different brain states.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a leading cause of cancer-related deaths with an increasing incidence in China. The aberrant expression of angiomotin (AMOT) has been confirmed in a variety of tumors and can interact with Yes-associated protein (YAP) to either promote or suppress the progression of cancer. Unfortunately, its role in CRC remains poorly elucidated.

EGR1 plays a critical role in cancer progression. However, its precise role in hepatocellular carcinoma has not been elucidated. In this study, we found that the overexpression of EGR1 suppresses hepatocellular carcinoma cell proliferation and increases cell apoptosis by binding to the miR-203a promoter sequence.

The E-cadherin gene (CDH1) is associated with poor prognosis and metastasis in patients with breast cancer, and methylation of its promoter is correlated with decreased gene expression. However, there is currently no direct evidence that CDH1 promoter methylation indicates poor prognosis in patients with breast cancer. In the present study, methylation-specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was applied to detect the methylation status of the CDH1 promoter in 137 primary breast cancer, 85 matched normal breast tissue and 13 lung metastasis specimens.

Recent studies have showed interleukin 10 (IL-10) is a critical cytokine that determines antiviral immune response and is related to virus-associated cancers. However, whether genetically elevated circulating IL-10 levels are associated with the risk of human papilloma virus and Epstein-Barr virus-associated cancers (HEACs) is still unclear. Mendelian randomization method was implemented to meta-analyze available observational studies by employing IL-10 three variants (-592C>A, -819C>T, and -1082A>G) as instruments.

Despite the involvement of subcortical brain structures in the pathogenesis of chronic pain and persistent pain as the defining symptom of knee osteoarthritis (KOA), little attention has been paid to the morphometric measurements of these subcortical nuclei in patients with KOA. The purpose of this study is to explore the potential morphological abnormalities of subcortical brain structures in patients with KOA as compared to the healthy control subjects by using high-resolution MRI. Structural MR data were acquired from 26 patients with KOA and 31 demographically similar healthy individuals.

Inherited long QT syndrome (LQTS) is an electrical heart disorder that manifests with syncope, seizures, and increased risk of torsades de pointes and sudden cardiac death. Dominant-negative current suppression is a mechanism by which pathogenic proteins disrupt the function of ion channels in inherited LQTS. However, current approaches for the management of inherited LQTS are inadequate.

Ovarian cancer is the most lethal gynecologic malignancy and most cases are diagnosed at an advanced stage with metastases; however, the molecular events supporting ovarian cancer development and progression remain poorly understood. In this study, by analysis of the genome-scale DNA methylation profiles of 8 healthy ovaries, 89 ovarian cancers and the corresponding 4 normal ovaries from The Cancer Genome Atlas, we unveiled the abnormalities in gene methylation of ovarian cancers, and found that IQGAP2 one of the most frequently altered genes, was significantly hypermethylated in ovarian cancer. There was an inverse correlation between IQGAP2 DNA methylation and mRNA expression, and IQGAP2 expression was downregulated in ovarian cancer.

Targeted therapy has revolutionized the therapeutic landscape in oncology in recent years and anti-VEGF agent has been approved for ovarian cancer (OC). Unfortunately, the efficacy of this treatment is limited due to the development of resistance, while the molecular mechanisms underlying OC resistance to anti-VEGF therapy are less clear. In this study, we observed a differential response of OC cells to anti-VEGF agent bevacizumab (BV) by using xenograft models.

Objective: To investigate the effects of β-elemene in suppressing the proliferation and apoptosis of SGC7901 gastric cancer cells in vitro and explore the underlying mechanisms.
Methods: Using MTT assay, flow cytometry, and clonogenic survival assay, we assessed the effects of β-elemene on the viability, apoptosis, cell cycle distribution, and clonogenic survival of gastric cancer SGC7901 cells and gastric mucosal epithelial GES-1 cells. Western blotting was employed to determine the changes in the protein expression profiles in SGC7901 cells in response to β-elemene treatment.
