Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic, non-specific intestinal disease that not only affects the quality of life of patients and their families but also increases the risk of colorectal cancer. The nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain-like receptor family pyrin domain-containing protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome is an important component of inflammatory response system, and its activation induces an inflammatory cascade response that is involved in the development and progression of UC by releasing inflammatory cytokines, damaging intestinal epithelial cells, and disrupting the intestinal mucosal barrier. Chinese medicine (CM) plays a vital role in the prevention and treatment of UC and is able to regulate NLRP3 inflammasome.

Melatonin protects against NMDA-induced retinal ganglion cell injury by regulating the microglia-TNFα-RGC p38 MAPK pathway.

Int Immunopharmacol

May 2023

Department of Ophthalmology, The Second Xiangya Hospital of Central South University, Changsha, China; Hunan Clinical Research Center of Ophthalmic Disease, Changsha, China. Electronic address:

Glaucoma, one of the most common ocular neurodegenerative diseases worldwide, is characterized by retinal ganglion cell (RGC) loss. There is a large body of literature that describes the neuroprotective role of melatonin against neurodegenerative diseases by regulating neuroinflammation, although the exact mechanism through which melatonin acts on RGC is still uncertain. This study assessed the protective effects of melatonin using a NMDA-induced RGC injury model, and studied the possible mechanisms involved in this process.

Wall shear stress and its role in atherosclerosis.

Front Cardiovasc Med

April 2023

College of Rehabilitation Medicine and Health Care, Hunan University of Medicine, Huaihua, China.

Atherosclerosis (AS) is the major form of cardiovascular disease and the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in countries around the world. Atherosclerosis combines the interactions of systemic risk factors, haemodynamic factors, and biological factors, in which biomechanical and biochemical cues strongly regulate the process of atherosclerosis. The development of atherosclerosis is directly related to hemodynamic disorders and is the most important parameter in the biomechanics of atherosclerosis.

Electronic address:

Evidence is mounting that abnormal vascular remodeling leads to many cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). This suggests that vascular remodeling can be a crucial target for the prevention and treatment of CVDs. Recently, celastrol, an active ingredient of the broadly used Chinese herb Tripterygium wilfordii Hook F, has attracted extensive interest for its proven potential to improve vascular remodeling.

The proliferation of extravillous trophoblasts (EVT) and their further migration, invasion, and differentiation into the decidual and myometrial vasculature are vital for spiral artery remodeling. These physiological functions of EVT are also essential steps in the implantation of the human embryo and the formation of the placenta and are closely related to pregnancy maintenance and the occurrence of abortion. Hyperin is a flavonoid with anti-inflammatory, pro-proliferative, and anti-apoptotic properties.

Disturbed structure and dysfunction of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) lead to degenerative diseases of the retina. Excessive accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the RPE is thought to play an important role in RPE dysfunction and degeneration. Autophagy is a generally low-activity degradation process of cellular components that increases significantly when high levels of oxidative stress are present.

Article Synopsis
  • This study explored how icariin (ICA) and curcumol influence autophagy, ferroptosis, and lipid metabolism in prostate cancer cells, both in lab cultures and in live models.
  • Treatment with ICA and curcumol significantly slowed the growth of prostate cancer cells, increased apoptosis and reactive oxygen species (ROS), and triggered autophagy and ferroptosis, particularly in the DU145 and PC-3 cancer cell lines.
  • The research showed that the effects of ICA and curcumol on cancer cell metabolism were linked to the regulation of the miR-7/mTOR/SREBP1 pathway, highlighting their potential as therapeutic agents in prostate cancer treatment.

Accumulating evidence suggests that astrocytes, the abundant cell type in the central nervous system (CNS), play a critical role in maintaining the immune response after cerebral infarction, regulating the blood-brain barrier (BBB), providing nutrients to the neurons, and reuptake of glutamate. The circadian clock is an endogenous timing system that controls and optimizes biological processes. The central circadian clock and the peripheral clock are consistent, controlled by various circadian components, and participate in the pathophysiological process of astrocytes.
