Article Synopsis
  • Surgical management of unstable osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) in the knee aims to stabilize the lesion and promote healing.
  • A retrospective study reviewed 13 knees from 12 patients who underwent a specific technique called in-situ mosaicplasty fixation, with some patients also getting realignment osteotomy.
  • Results showed that 92% of treated knees healed successfully, highlighting in-situ mosaicplasty fixation as a promising method with favorable outcomes and a low rate of re-operation.

Introduction: Electrically evoked cortical auditory evoked potentials (ECAEPs) are central brain responses to auditory stimuli that correlate with postoperative cochlear implant (CI) hearing outcomes. They differ from electrically evoked compound action potentials (ECAPs) which are peripheral responses that can be elicited intraoperatively and may also predict CI hearing outcomes. It is not known to what degree ECAP and ECAEP responses are associated with each other.

Advanced hepatic fibrosis occurs in up to 25% of individuals with C282Y homozygous hemochromatosis. Our aim was to determine whether human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-A3 and B7 alleles act as genetic modifiers of the likelihood of advanced hepatic fibrosis. Between 1972 and 2013, 133 HFE C282Y homozygous individuals underwent clinical and biochemical evaluation, HLA typing, liver biopsy for fibrosis staging and phlebotomy treatment.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is characterized by a pro-inflammatory state associated with organ failure, thrombosis, and death. We investigated a novel inflammatory biomarker, γ' fibrinogen (GPF), in 103 hospitalized patients with COVID-19 and 19 healthy controls. We found significant associations between GPF levels and the severity of COVID-19 as judged by blood oxygen saturation (SpO).

Purpose: To study the evolution of type D personality traits in older adults after cochlear implantation compared with a control group of severely hearing impaired older adults who did not receive a cochlear implant (CI). The influence of COVID-19 on this evolution was also explored. Type D personality combines a high degree of negative affectivity (NA) and social inhibition (SI).

High-Throughput COVID-19 Testing of Naso-Oropharyngeal Swabs Using a Sensitive Extraction-Free Sample Preparation Method.

Microbiol Spectr

August 2022

PathWest Laboratory Medicine WA, Department of Clinical Microbiology, Fiona Stanley Hospital, Murdoch, Western Australia, Australia.

High-throughput diagnostic assays are required for large-scale population testing for severe acute respiratory coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The gold standard technique for SARS-CoV-2 detection in nasopharyngeal swab specimens is nucleic acid extraction followed by real-time reverse transcription-PCR. Two high-throughput commercial extraction and detection systems are used routinely in our laboratory: the Roche cobas SARS-CoV-2 assay (cobas) and the Roche MagNA Pure 96 system combined with the SpeeDx PlexPCR SARS-CoV-2 assay (Plex).

Purpose: To describe the effect of chronic pain on the activities of children and adolescents with cerebral palsy, to describe coping strategies, and to examine associations between effect of pain on activities, coping strategies, and level of pain.

Methods: Using an online survey, 27, 8- to 18-year-olds with cerebral palsy and chronic pain or their parents reported pain intensity, distribution, activity limitations (using the Child Activity Limitations Interview-21), and coping strategies (using the Pediatric Pain Coping Inventory).

Results: Pain intensity ranged from 3 to 10, and 89% reported pain in multiple areas, principally the lower limbs.

Arthritis Prediction of Advanced Hepatic Fibrosis in HFE Hemochromatosis.

Mayo Clin Proc

September 2022

Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Fiona Stanley Fremantle Hospital Group, Murdoch, Western Australia, Australia; School of Medical and Health Sciences, Edith Cowan University, Joondalup, Western Australia, Australia. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to determine if arthritis could predict advanced liver fibrosis in patients with HFE hemochromatosis.
  • A total of 112 patients were analyzed, revealing a significant association between the presence of arthritis and advanced hepatic fibrosis.
  • The findings suggest that a lack of arthritis could indicate a lower risk of advanced fibrosis, which may help in disease management and patient assessment.

Objectives: The 59-item Work Rehabilitation Questionnaire (WORQ) was developed based on the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) core set for vocational rehabilitation to assess work related functioning. It was revised to include 17 questions, assigned to 14 ICF categories relevant to cochlear implant (CI) users. This cross-sectional multicenter study aimed to evaluate CI users' responses on the WORQ questions to describe and generate ICF qualifiers for the revised WORQ in CI users, forming part of a broader framework of CI outcome measures linked to the ICF.

Reliable high-throughput methods are required for the detection of severe acute respiratory coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). We evaluated the new research use only (RUO) SpeeDx SARS-CoV-2 components (Plex) compared to the Roche cobas SARS-CoV-2 assay (cobas). A collection of positive ( = 214) and negative samples ( = 201) was tested in parallel comparing Plex with cobas.

Qualitative and quantitative effects of thermal treatment of naso-oropharyngeal samples before cobas SARS-CoV-2 testing.

Diagn Microbiol Infect Dis

December 2021

Department of Clinical Microbiology, PathWest Laboratory Medicine WA, Fiona Stanley Hospital, Murdoch, Western Australia, Australia.

To improve laboratory safety we thermally treated naso-oropharyngeal samples before testing with the cobas SARS-CoV-2 assay. This study aimed to determine if thermal treatment significantly affects the qualitative detection of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and the quantitative measurement of cobas SARS-CoV-2 ORF1a and E-gene target copy number using an in-house quantitative method. A collection of positive (n = 238) and negative samples (n = 196) was tested in parallel comparing thermal treatment (75 °C for 15 minutes) to room-temperature.

Objectives: The primary goal of the study was to investigate electrical cortical auditory evoked potentials (eCAEPs) at maximum comfortable level (MCL) and 50% MCL on three cochlear implant (CI) electrodes and compare them with the acoustic CAEP (aCAEPs), in terms of the amplitude and latency of the P1-N1-P2 complex. This was achieved by comparing the eCAEP obtained with the method described and stimulating single electrodes, via the fitting software spanning the cochlear array and the aCAEP obtained using the HEARLab system at four speech tokens.

Design: Twenty MED-EL (MED-EL Medical Electronics, Innsbruck, Austria) CI adult users were tested.
