Expansion of nucleotide repeat sequences is associated with more than 40 human neuromuscular disorders. The different pathogenic mechanisms associated with the expression of nucleotide repeats are not well understood. We use a Caenorhabditis elegans model that expresses expanded CUG repeats only in cells of the body wall muscle and recapitulate muscle dysfunction and impaired organismal motility to identify the basis by which expression of RNA repeats is toxic to muscle function.

Introduction: Dynamic Bayesian networks improve the modeling of complex systems by incorporating continuous probabilistic relationships between covariates that change over time. This study aimed to analyze the complex causal links contributing to child undernutrition using dynamic Bayesian network modeling, examining both the best- and worst-case scenarios. The Young Cohort of the Ethiopian Young Lives dataset from 2002-2016 was used to analyze the complex relationships among various covariates influencing child undernutrition.

Exhaled Nitric Oxide and Sputum Eosinophils Are Complementary Tools for Diagnosing Occupational Asthma.

Background: Exposure-related changes in exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) and sputum eosinophils have not been thoroughly compared in the investigation of occupational asthma.

Objective: This study aimed at comparing the accuracies of the changes in FeNO concentrations and sputum eosinophil counts in identifying asthmatic reactions induced by occupational agents during specific inhalation challenges (SICs).

Methods: This retrospective multicenter study included 321 subjects who completed an assessment of FeNO and sputum eosinophils before and 24 h after SICs with various occupational agents, of whom 156 showed a positive result.

This study probes the vibronic interactions in the photoelectron spectra of CAlGe, exploring its six excited electronic states through an approach that combines the electronic structure calculations and the quantum nuclear dynamics. Central to this investigation is utilizing a model diabatic Hamiltonian, which allows for the exact evaluation of Hamiltonian parameters and fitting potential energy cuts (PECs). Notably, the analysis of these PECs uncovers pronounced nonadiabatic effects within the photoelectron spectra, emphasized by the presence of multiple conical intersections.

Differences in the palliative care phase between patients with nonmalignant pulmonary disease and lung cancer: a retrospective study.

Background: Patients with chronic nonmalignant pulmonary disease and lung cancer both need palliative care, but palliative care services may be better adjusted to serve cancer patients. We compared the timing and clinical practice of palliative care and acute hospital usage during the last year of life in patients with nonmalignant pulmonary disease or lung cancer.

Methods: This was a retrospective study of all patients in a palliative care phase (palliative goal of care) with nonmalignant pulmonary disease or lung cancer who were treated at Tampere University Hospital, Finland, during the years 2018-2020.

Association of maxillofacial injuries with traumatic brain injuries in paediatric patients: a case-control study.

Background: Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) are among the most challenging conditions to accurately diagnose in children, and many TBIs are underdiagnosed. Patients with maxillofacial injury may be at risk for TBI. The objective of this study was to analyse the association between maxillofacial injuries and TBI among paediatric patients.

Conceiving during the first postoperative year after bariatric surgery: a retrospective study of pregnancy outcomes.

Background: An increasing number of childbearing-aged women have undergone bariatric surgery (BS). Although pregnancy outcomes generally improve after BS, concern remains over the impact of rapid weight loss and the catabolic state that occurs soon after BS. At least a 12-month surgery-to-conception time (SCT) is recommended, though the reasoning behind this has been questioned.

Bioavailability of rumen-protected histidine, lysine, and methionine assessed using different in vivo methods.

The objective of this experiment was to estimate the bioavailability (BA) of rumen-protected (RP) His, RPLys, and 2 RPMet products using 3 in vivo methods: area under the curve (AUC), plasma dose-response (PDR), and fecal free AA (FFAA) methods. We used 8 rumen-cannulated cows in a replicated 4 × 4 Latin square experiment with 16-d periods. Treatments were (1) abomasal infusion of water (control), (2) abomasal infusion of free His, Lys, and Met (FAA), (3) administration of RPHis + RPLys + RPMet1 (rumen-protected methionine protected with ethyl cellulose; RPAA1), and (4) administration of RPHis + RPLys + RPMet2 (rumen-protected methionine protected with a pH-sensitive polymer; RPAA2).

Background: Skin care of sick newborns is important because skin acts as a barrier to prevent neonates from infections which may lead to neonatal morbidity and mortality. The highly technological environment of the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) makes them vulnerable to loss of skin integrity. Purpose: To evaluate and compare hospital related costs, postoperative costs, and the long-term costs of maxillary balloon sinuplasty (BSP) and middle meatal antrostomy (MMA) in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis.

Methods: Data were collected from patient registers on 88 patients treated with BSP and 240 patients treated with MMA between 2011 and 2017. Information was also gathered on the related costs of surgery, material, postoperative ward care, and any extra patient visits that took place within one year following the operation.

Introduction: The rapid growth of flexible and wearable electronics has created a need for materials that offer both mechanical durability and high conductivity. Textile electronics, which integrate electronic pathways into fabrics, are pivotal in this field but face challenges in maintaining stable electrical performance under mechanical strain. This study develops highly stretchable silver multi-walled carbon nanotube (Ag-MWCNT) composites, tailored for screen printing and heat-transfer methods, to address these challenges.

Excellent Nursing Leadership Towards Magnet Culture Among Nurse Leaders: An Interview Study.

Aims: This study describes nurse leaders' experiences of nursing leadership in Finland towards Magnet hospital culture.

Design: This is a qualitative descriptive study.

Methods: The data from nurse leaders (n = 9) were collected in face-to-face or online interviews in June and August 2023 in Finland and analysed using an inductive content analysis approach.

Patterns in coarse root decomposition of woody plants: effects of climate, root quality, mycorrhizal associations and phylogeny.

Coarse roots represent a globally important belowground carbon pool, but the factors controlling coarse root decomposition rates remain poorly understood relative to other plant biomass components. We compiled the most comprehensive dataset of coarse root decomposition data including 148 observations from 60 woody species, and linked coarse root decomposition rates to plant traits, phylogeny and climate to address questions of the dominant controls on coarse root decomposition. We found that decomposition rates increased with mean annual temperature, root nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations.

Background: The European cross-border electronic prescription (CBeP) was first introduced in Estonia and Finland. The CBeP service is gradually being implemented across Europe, prompting a need for practical studies to assess its benefits and potential shortcomings.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate Estonian and Finnish pharmacists' experiences with patient identification, personal data protection and safe use of medications with CBeP, as well as main advantages and areas of development of CBeP.
