Background: Life-limited patients may lose decision-making abilities during disease progression. Advance care planning can be used as a discussion method for healthcare professionals to understand patients' future care preferences. However, due to many difficulties, the participation rate of healthcare professionals in advance care planning is not high.

Background: Hepatoblastoma (HB), hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and embryonal sarcoma (ES) are the three main types of liver tumors in children and adolescents. At present, epidemiological knowledge and predictors of these three liver tumor types in multi-ethnic populations are limited. This study aimed to outline the clinical features and construct a prognostic nomogram for these tumors, which can contribute to the prediction of dynamic overall survival probability during the follow-up period.

Background: A locking compression plate (LCP) of the distal femur is used as an external fixator for lower tibial fractures. However, in clinical practice, the technique lacks a standardized approach and a strong biomechanical basis for its stability.

Methods: In this paper, internal tibial LCP fixator (Group IT-44), external tibial LCP fixator (Group ET-44), external distal femoral LCP fixator (Group EF-44, group EF-33, group EF-22), and conventional external fixator (Group CEF-22) frames were used to fix unstable fracture models of the lower tibial segment, and anatomical studies were performed to standardize the operation as well as to assess the biomechanical stability and adjustability of the distal femoral LCP external fixator by biomechanical experiments.

Iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) can be applied to targeted drug delivery, targeted diagnosis and treatment of tumors due to their easy preparation, good biocompatibility, low biotoxicity, high imaging quality, high magnetothermal sensitivity and stable targeting after certain surface modifications. However, the complexity of the mechanism of action and their properties has led to there being few clinical applications of IONPs. This review first describes the targeting mechanisms of IONPs and their toxicity issues, then discusses the applications of IONP targeting studies in tumor MRI.

The primary sites of infection include the respiratory and central nervous systems, and skeletal infection was rarely reported. In this case, we describe a case of cryptococcal osteomyelitis involving the left side of the acetabulum in a Chinese patient with chronic hepatitis B.

Predicting brain invasion preoperatively should help to guide surgical decision-making and aid the prediction of meningioma grading and prognosis. However, only a few imaging features have been identified to aid prediction. This study aimed to develop and validate an MRI-based nomogram to predict brain invasion by meningioma.

Sepsis is a life-threatening condition, and treatment for sepsis in clinic is often not available, partially due to insufficient understanding of the pathogenesis of sepsis. Extensive study to elucidate the pathogenesis is required to improve the clinical management and outcome of sepsis. In this study, we investigated the pathogenesis of sepsis using peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from septic patients and studied the underlying mechanism of miR-16-5p on aerobic glycolysis in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-treated THP1 and Raw264.

Basic and Applied Laboratory of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the Fifth Affiliated Hospital of Zunyi Medical University, Zhuhai 519000, China; Key Laboratory of Pharmacology, Zunyi Medical University, Zunyi 563000, China. Electronic address:

Background: Renal interstitial fibrosis (RIF) is the main pathological feature of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) caused by various chronic kidney diseases (CKD), and is closely related to renal dysfunction and patient prognosis. Salvianolic acid A (Sal A) and salvianolic acid B (Sal B), isolated from traditional Chinese medicine Salviae miltiorrhizae, have been confirmed to have anti-fibrotic effects on liver, cardiac and kidney. However, the precise molecular mechanism underlying the nephroprotective effects of Sal A and Sal B, and whether there is a difference between the two in RIF are still unclear.

As per the theory of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), the liver and kidney dysfunction are important pathogenies for premature ovarian failure (POF). POF is a common gynecological disease that reduced the pregnancy rate. Electro-acupuncture (EA) is a useful non-pharmaceutical therapy that supposedly regulates the function of the liver and kidney in the treatment of POF with TCM.

Introduction: Primary renal fibrosarcoma is a relatively uncommon tumor in the urinary system of adults, in fact only 6 cases have been reported in the English literature so far worldwide. The etiology of renal fibrosarcoma is incompletely understood. It is still lacking in simple and specific tissue-based biomarkers to assist the diagnosis of renal fibrosarcoma.

Article Synopsis
  • This study focuses on the safety and effectiveness of therapeutic endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) in older patients (over 65) with chronic pancreatitis, contrasting it with younger patients.
  • The results showed that the success rates of ERCP were comparable between the elderly and younger groups, but older patients experienced a higher rate of moderate to severe complications.
  • Specific factors like being female and having conditions like pancreas divisum were linked to an increased risk of post-ERCP pancreatitis in geriatric patients.

Department of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, Department of Laboratory, National Center for Respiratory Medicine, National Clinical Research Center for Respiratory Disease, State Key Laboratory of Respiratory Disease, Guangzhou Institute of Respiratory Health, The First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University, Guangzhou, China.

With the global prevalence of COVID-19 and the constant emergence of viral variants, boosters for COVID-19 vaccines to enhance antibody titers in human bodies will become an inevitable trend. However, there is a lack of data on antibody levels and the protective effects of booster injections. This study monitored and analyzed the antibody potency and the antibody responses induced by the booster injection in the subjects who received three vaccine doses.

Background: Aging is an independent risk factor for heart failure (HF), and endothelial progenitor cell (EPC) function decreases with aging. Here, we further investigated whether age has a detrimental effect on circulating EPC function in HF with mildly reduced ejection fraction (HFmrEF) and its relationship with systemic inflammation.

Methods: 58 HFmrEF patients were recruited.

Primary carcinoid tumor of the kidney is an extremely rare well-differentiated neuroendocrine tumor, which is generally a low-grade malignant cancer with a good prognosis. Carcinoid tumors are rarely found in the urinary system. Here, we report a 34-year-old woman with primary renal well-differentiated neuroendocrine tumor who underwent nephron sparing surgery and no evidence of recurrence or distant metastasis was found during routine follow-up.

October 2022

National Center for Respiratory Medicine, The First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University, National Clinical Research Center for Respiratory Disease, State Key Laboratory of Respiratory Disease, Guangzhou Institue of Respiratory Health, Guangzhou, 510120, China.

The role of heparin-binding protein (HBP) as an acute inflammatory marker in acute exacerbations of interstitial lung disease (AE-ILD) and some stable ILD patients is not well-established. The significance of increasing HBP during an AE-ILD is examined and the first attempt to incorporate HBP into the ILD evaluation system is made. Then, the benefit of HBP in AE-ILD was investigated.

Preoperative distinction between transitional meningioma and atypical meningioma would aid the selection of appropriate surgical techniques, as well as the prognosis prediction. Here, we aimed to differentiate between these two tumors using radiomic signatures based on preoperative, contrast-enhanced T1-weighted and T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging. A total of 141 transitional meningioma and 101 atypical meningioma cases between January 2014 and December 2018 with a histopathologically confirmed diagnosis were retrospectively reviewed.
