Poly(A) binding protein interacting protein 1 (PAIP1) is a translation regulator and also regulate the decay of mRNA. PAIP1 has also been reported to be a marker of increased invasive potential of liver cancer. However, the roles and underlying molecular mechanism of PAIP1 in liver cancer is still unclear.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers are studying a condition called Fuchs endothelial corneal dystrophy (FECD) to find new treatments using special software that looks at gene expression data from patients.
  • They compared gene activity in eye cells from FECD patients and healthy individuals to see what makes the disease different.
  • The findings showed that certain genes are linked to FECD, and the software suggested that a type of drug called HDAC inhibitors might help treat the disease by fixing the abnormal gene activity.

Existing PM-morbidity studies using daily mean concentration as exposure metric may fail to capture intra-day variations of PM concentrations, resulting in underestimated health impacts to some extent. This study introduced a novel indicator, daily excessive concentration hours (DECH), defined as sums of per-hourly excessive concentrations of PM against a specific threshold within a day. PM DECHs were separately calculated as daily concentration-hours >8, 10, 15, 20, and 25 μg/m (abbreviations: DECH-8, DECH-10, DECH-15, DECH-20, and DECH-25).

Aims/introduction: Elevated concentrations of fasting plasma glucose (FPG) or hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) are well-established independent risk factors for progression to diabetes, cardiovascular comorbidities and mortality. Most previous studies on the relationships of anthropometric measures with hyperglycemia were carried out among adults and adolescents, but few data are available for the performance predication of the predictors for diagnosing elevated FPG or HbA1c among young children.

Materials And Methods: Involving 5,556 students of aged 7-9 years, a school-based cross-sectional survey was carried out between March and June 2019 in Shenzhen, China.

SNAI1 is a prognostic biomarker and correlated with immune infiltrates in gastrointestinal cancers.

Aging (Albany NY)

August 2020

The Institute of Metabolic Diseases, Baoan Central Hospital of Shenzhen, The Fifth Affiliated Hospital of Shenzhen University, Shenzhen 518102, Guangdong, China.

Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT)-related genes play an important role in immunosuppression. However, the correlations of EMT-related genes to prognosis and tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes in different cancers remain unclear. TCGA, GEO databases were used to analyze the expression, prognosis, and immune infiltration of EMT markers in cancer.

Gastroenterol Res Pract

January 2020

Institute of Low Carb Medicine, Baoan Central Hospital of Shenzhen, The Fifth Affiliated Hospital of Shenzhen University, Shenzhen, Guangdong 518102, China.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess the occurrence of elevated serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels among adolescents in Shenzhen, China, using data from 9 schools during 2017-2018.
  • A total of 7281 students aged 10-17 were analyzed, revealing a 7.11% prevalence of elevated ALT levels when using the lower diagnostic criteria, with higher rates in girls than boys, and a lower 2.72% prevalence when applying stricter criteria.
  • The findings highlight significant gender and age differences in ALT levels among adolescents, underscoring the need for ongoing monitoring and potential interventions for liver health.

Introduction: Sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (SAHS) is a multifactorial disease characterized by recurrent hypopnea or respiratory interruption during sleep, which causes intermittent hypoxemia, hypercapnia, and sleep structure disturbances. An association between ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and the type of SAHS has rarely been reported in the literature. Here, we present a case of SAHS in a patient with AS and discuss the possible mechanism underlying the type of SAHS.

Background: Numerous studies have consistently demonstrated that high body mass index (BMI) is related to elevated serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) among adults, but little is known about the association regarding adolescents, especially in China. In this study, we aimed to investigate the association between BMI and ALT activity among Chinese adolescents.

Methods: A school-based cross-sectional study was performed among nine high schools in Shenzhen, China between February 2017 and June 2018.

Background: Screening for elevated serum alanine aminotransferase (ALAT) can help identifying individuals at the risks of chronic and metabolic diseases, but blood collection is invasive and cannot be widely used for investigations. Considered as simple and inexpensive screening indices, individual characteristics and anthropometric measurements can be measured in a large crowd and may be important surrogate markers for ALAT levels. This study aimed to examine the diagnostic performance of individual characteristics and anthropometric parameters as predictive factors for discerning an elevated ALAT activity among Shenzhen children and adolescents.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) function by negatively regulating their target genes. Aberrant expression of baculoviral IAP repeat containing 5 (BIRC5) is associated with the tumor growth and metastasis, however, the clinical significance of miRNAs/BIRC5 axis in gastric cancer (GC) remains unknown. The association of BIRC5 or miR-195-5p/-218-5p expression levels with the clinicopathological characteristics and prognosis in patients with GC was analysed by using a tissue microarray and TCGA dataset.

Background: Research argued that daily excessive concentration hours (DECH) could be more informative through accounting for within-day variations, when assessing population-level exposure to ambient fine particle (PM). However, few studies have comparatively investigated PM-associated risks using DECH and two common metrics of daily mean and hourly peak concentration.

Methods: We collected daily records of all-cause emergency department visits (EDVs) and hourly data on air pollutants and meteorological factors from Shenzhen, China, 2015-2018.
