Expression of the double homeobox 4 () transcription factor is highly regulated in early embryogenesis and is subsequently epigenetically silenced. Ectopic expression of due to hypomethylation of the D4Z4 repeat array on permissive chromosome 4q35 alleles is associated with facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD). In peripheral blood samples from 188 healthy individuals, D4Z4 methylation was highly variable, ranging from 19% to 76%, and was not affected by age.

Smoking of classic cigarettes has been well-established as a health risk factor, including cardiovascular, neurological, and pulmonary diseases. Adverse effects on human reproduction have also been shown. Smokers are assumed to have a significantly lower chance of pregnancy, however, the impact of smoking on medically assisted reproduction (MAR) treatment outcomes is controversial.

- Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) were found in human follicular fluid (FF) of women undergoing fertility treatments, with nonylphenol and Mirex being the most prevalent.
- The study analyzed EDCs in 210 women and noted a significant reduction in maturation and fertilization rates due to these chemicals, although clinical pregnancy rates remained unaffected.
- Lifestyle factors, specifically purchasing clothes from fashion discount stores, correlated with higher EDC levels in FF, while other factors like residential area and dietary habits did not show similar associations.
