The European Union (EU) experienced two major instances of refugee influx: in 2015, refugees, mainly from Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq fled civil war, persecution, and dire conditions in neighbouring countries and in 2022, Ukrainians fled from Russia's full-scale invasion. Fusing theoretical insights on framing and crisification of migration, we ask: How do EU actors frame situations of refugee mass influx? Employing a Discourse Network Analysis, we examine EU representatives' framing of both instances with respect to three analytical foci: (1) who or what they considered to be in crisis, (2) their framing of refugees; and (3) who they saw to be responsible for solving the crisis. We show how, in 2015, EU representatives framed mass displacement predominantly as a crisis at and of Europe's borders, and refugees as threats to Member States' public, economic and cultural security.

We present a built-in physics neural network architecture, known as inelastic Constitutive Artificial Neural Network (iCANN), to discover the inelastic phenomenon of tensional homeostasis. In this course, identifying the optimal model and material parameters to accurately capture the macroscopic behavior of inelastic materials can only be accomplished with significant expertise, is often time-consuming, and prone to error, regardless of the specific inelastic phenomenon. To address this challenge, built-in physics machine learning algorithms offer significant potential.

Following regulatory pressure, the manufacture of long-chain per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) has been phased out, and alternatives such as short-chain homologs and ether-PFAS have replaced the bioaccumulative long-chain PFAS. However, data are lacking regarding the toxicokinetic (TK) properties of certain PFAS, particularly emergent substitutes for long-chain compounds. Additionally, the existing analytical methods used for TK studies measure a single compound or only a few simultaneously.

Who's Prone to Breaking the Rules?-Predictors of Challenging Patient Behavior in Forensic Addiction Treatment.

Int J Offender Ther Comp Criminol

December 2024

LVR-Institut für Versorgungsforschung, c/o LVR-Klinik Köln, Germany.

Many patients in substance use disorder treatment exhibit behavior that is challenging for therapy. In Germany, offenders with addiction problems may be sentenced to treatment in forensic psychiatric institutions (Sect. 64 of the German Criminal Code).

In Germany, Forensic Addiction Treatment serves the purpose of reintegration into society. Patients with a migration background are over-represented, show slightly higher rates of premature termination and exhibit less successful outcomes. However, outcome research was often limited by conceptual ambiguities and insufficient control for confounding variables.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers debated how to measure Machiavellianism, leading to the development of the Machiavellian Approach and Avoidance Questionnaire (MAAQ) that looks at two motivational aspects: approach (strategic advantage-seeking) and avoidance (preventing loss).
  • Findings from a study with 1,583 German participants showed that while both facets related to disagreeableness, the MAAQ did not clearly differentiate between Machiavellianism and subclinical psychopathy.
  • A second study with 1,853 participants across Germany, Canada, the UK, and Serbia confirmed that the MAAQ is cross-nationally valid but raised concerns about its ability to accurately assess Machiavellian traits.

Resolving spatiotemporal electrical signaling within the islet via CMOS microelectrode arrays.

Diabetes

November 2024

University of Münster, Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Chemistry, Dept. of Pharmacology, PharmaCampus, Münster, Germany.

Glucose-stimulated beta-cells exhibit synchronized calcium dynamics across the islet that recruit beta-cells to enhance insulin secretion. Compared to calcium dynamics, the formation and cell-to-cell propagation of electrical signals within the islet are poorly characterized. To determine factors that influence the propagation of electrical activity across the islet underlying calcium oscillations and beta-cell synchronization, we used high-resolution CMOS multielectrode arrays (MEA) to measure voltage changes associated with the membrane potential of individual cells within intact C57BL6 mouse islets.

RNA isoform diversity, produced via alternative splicing, and alternative usage of transcription start and poly(A) sites, results in varied transcripts being derived from the same gene. Distinct isoforms can play important biological roles, including by changing the sequences or expression levels of protein products. The first single-cell approaches to RNA sequencing-and later, spatial approaches-which are now widely used for the identification of differentially expressed genes, rely on short reads and offer the ability to transcriptomically compare different cell types but are limited in their ability to measure differential isoform expression.

To date, silicone elastomers intended for food and skin contact are considered compliant as long as their weight loss during a thermal treatment (200 °C, 4 h) is below 0.5 wt%. The common assumption is that this weight loss is caused almost entirely by potentially harmful volatile siloxane oligomers.
