Evaluating photodynamic therapy for oral precancerous lesions: Highlighting outcome measure of malignant transformation.

J Dent Sci

January 2024

College of Stomatology, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, National Center for Stomatology, National Clinical Research Center for Oral Diseases, Shanghai Key Laboratory of Stomatology, Shanghai, China.

The main outcome measure assessed in previous studies on photodynamic therapy (PDT) for oral precancerous lesions (OPL) is clinical response based on the alteration in lesion size after treatment. However, the primary and secondary outcome measures of the interventions for OPL should be malignant transformation and recurrence. Thus, the objective of this short communication is to summarize the evidence on PDT in preventing the recurrence and malignant transformation of OPL.

Article Synopsis
  • Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) linked to plexiform neurofibroma (pNF) involves complex interactions between Schwann cells and neurofibroma-associated fibroblasts (NFAFs), which remain unclear.
  • Researchers used single-cell RNA sequencing to analyze these interactions and identified the pivotal PTN/NCL signaling pathway that mediates communication between Schwann cells and NFAFs.
  • Findings indicate that targeting the PTN/NCL/PRAS40 axis could potentially lead to therapeutic strategies for treating pNF by reducing collagen synthesis and NFAF proliferation.

Establishment of noncycloplegic methods for screening myopia and pre-myopia in preschool children.

Front Med (Lausanne)

December 2023

Shanghai Eye Disease Prevention and Treatment Center, Shanghai Eye Hospital, Shanghai, China.

Article Synopsis
  • The study highlights that pre-myopia is a significant concern for preventing myopia in young children, particularly those under 3 years old, as it increases their risk of developing myopia.
  • Conducted in 16 kindergartens in Shanghai, the research evaluated noncycloplegic screening methods, analyzing visual acuity and refractive measurements from 1,308 preschoolers to find the prevalence of myopia and pre-myopia.
  • Results indicated that while using uncorrected distance visual acuity alone was not effective, combining axial length and the corneal curvature ratio with spherical equivalent measurements offered better accuracy in screening both pre-myopia and myopia in young children.

Potential Role of GLP-1 Based Therapeutics in Coronary Artery Disease.

Front Biosci (Landmark Ed)

November 2023

Health Commission of Shanxi Province, 030032 Taiyuan, Shanxi, China.

Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), an incretin hormone primarily secreted by intestinal L cells, regulates glucose metabolism by increasing insulin synthesis and secretion, decreasing plasma glucagon levels, reducing food intake, and slowing gastric emptying. This has led to the development of GLP-1 receptor (GLP-1R) agonists as a treatment for diabetes and obesity. In addition to being present in beta cells, GLP-1R has also been identified in blood vessels and the heart, suggesting that GLP-1R agonists may have an impact on cardiovascular health.

Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Hepatic lipid buildup is the main cause of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and previous research reveals that lnc-HC helps prevent it by boosting the expression of miR-130b-3p.
  • The current study shows that lnc-HC enhances miR-130b-3p production and activity, leading to the downregulation of genes associated with lipid accumulation, such as PPARγ and Acsl1/4.
  • Additionally, lnc-HC helps assemble the RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC) and promotes miR-130b-3p maturation by increasing the activity of specific transcription factors and directly interacting with key proteins, linking it to reduced liver triglycer

Bone resorption occurs after bone grafting, however, contemporaneous reconstruction of the innervation of the bone graft is a potential treatment to maintain the bone mass of the graft. The innervation of bone is an emerging research topic. To understand the potential molecular mechanisms of bone innervation after bone grafting, we collected normal iliac bone tissue as well as bone grafts with or without innervation from nine patients 1 year after surgery and performed RNA sequencing.

Background/purpose: Increasing evidence suggests that single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in Th1/Th2-related cytokine genes correlated with oral lichen planus (OLP) susceptibility. However, these results were inconsistent and inconclusive. Hence, the aim of this study is to draw a more precise estimation of the genetic associations between SNPs in 6 cytokines (IFN-γ, IL-18, TGFβ1, IL-1β, IL-2, IL-4) and OLP.

Purpose: To investigate the relationship between the levels of soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (sICAM-1), interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) in gingival sulcus fluid and peri-implantitis (PI) in patients with implant restoration.

Methods: A total of 198 patients with implant restoration admitted to Fengcheng Hospital from January 2019 to December 2021 were selected, the patients were divided into PI and non-PI group according to whether the implant restoration was complicated by PI 3 months after restoration. The levels of sICAM-1, IL-1β and HIF-1α in the gingival sulcus fluid prior to implant restoration were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.
