Adjacent segment disease (ASD) is troublesome condition that has proved to be highly related to spinal malalignment after spinal surgery. Hence, we aimed to evaluate the morphological changes after anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF) and oblique LIF (OLIF) to establish the differences between the two surgical methods in terms of possible ASD avoidance. Fifty patients, half of whom received ALIF while the other half received OLIF, were analyzed with image studies and functional outcomes during the pre-operative and post-operative periods, and 2 years after surgery.

Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were fabricated with biocompatible collagen (Col) and then conjugated with berberine (BB), denoted as Au-Col-BB, to investigate the endocytic mechanisms in Her-2 breast cancer cell line and in bovine aortic endothelial cells (BAEC). Owing to the superior biocompatibility, tunable physicochemical properties, and potential functionalization with biomolecules, AuNPs have been well studied as carriers of biomolecules for diseases and cancer therapeutics. Composites of AuNPs with biopolymer, such as fibronectin or Col, have been revealed to increase cell proliferation, migration, and differentiation.

Radiotherapy can boost the therapeutic response to immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) by recruiting T lymphocytes and upregulating PD-L1 expression within the tumor microenvironment (TME). However, in some cases, tumor PD-L1 expression cannot be induced, even in the presence of abundant T lymphocytes, in locally advanced colorectal cancer patients who receive preoperative neoadjuvant concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT). In this study, we found that promoter methylation is negatively correlated with tumor PD-L1 expression and is an independent biomarker for locally advanced colorectal cancer patients.

The ability of capsaicin co-treatment to sensitize cancer cells to anticancer drugs has been widely documented, but the detailed underlying mechanisms remain unknown. In addition, the role of ribophorin II turnover on chemosensitization is still uncertain. Here, we investigated capsaicin-induced sensitization to chemotherapeutic agents in the human oral squamous carcinoma cell lines, HSC-3 and SAS.

Increased DNA replication and metastasis are hallmarks of cancer progression, while deregulated proliferation often triggers sustained replication stresses in cancer cells. How cancer cells overcome the growth stress and proceed to metastasis remains largely elusive. Proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) is an indispensable component of the DNA replication machinery.

Background: Clinical outcomes amongst Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) patients have shown satisfactory results being reported after lumbar surgery. The increased adoption of the interbody fusion technique has been due to a high fusion rate and less invasive procedures. However, the radiographic outcome for RA patients after receiving interbody fusion has scarcely been addressed in the available literature.

Nurse aides are the most important direct-care providers and are indispensable in caring for hospitalized patients. Most of the hospitalized patients who need care in their daily lives hire nurse aides as regular caregivers. Care work involves numerous risks, and negligent care that results in patient injury may put a nurse aid caregiver at risk of litigation.

Pleural biopsy revealed a picture of nonkeratinizing squamous cell carcinoma positive for Epstein-Barr virus-encoded small RNAs in situ hybridization, leading to a diagnosis of late pulmonary metastases from the antecedent nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Systemic chemotherapy with initial cisplatin plus paclitaxel and subsequent cisplatin plus gemcitabine brought remarkable resolution to the malignant cardiac and intrathoracic lesions.

Adequate stress on the Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) with the Unfolded Protein Response (UPR) could maintain glioma malignancy. Uncontrolled ER stress, on the other hand, predisposes an apoptosis-dominant UPR program. We studied here the proapoptotic actions of the Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGFR) inhibitor gefitinib, with the focus on ER stress.

Rectal cancer accounts for 30-40% of colorectal cancer (CRC) and is the most common cancer-related death worldwide. The preoperative neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (neoCRT) regimen is the main therapeutic strategy for patients with locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC) to control tumor growth and reduce distant metastasis. However, 30-40% of patients achieve a partial response to neoCRT and suffer from unnecessary drug toxicity side effects and a risk of distant metastasis.

Immunosurveillance and immunoscavenging prompted by preoperative chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) may contribute to improve local control and increase survival outcomes for patients with locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC). In this study, we investigated several genotypes of pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) and their impact on therapeutic efficacy in LARC patients treated with CCRT. We found that homozygosis of formyl peptide receptor 1 (FPR1) (E346A/rs867228) was associated with reduced 5-year overall survival (OS) by Kaplan-Meier analysis (62% vs.

Reciprocal crosstalk between platelets and malignancies underscores the potential of antiplatelet therapy in cancer treatment. In this study, we found that human chronic myeloid leukemia K562 cell-differentiated megakaryocytes and murine platelets produced bioactive substances and these are released into the extracellular space, partly in their exosomal form. High-mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) is a type of exosomal cargo, and the antiplatelet drugs aspirin and dipyridamole interfered with its incorporation into the exosomes.
