Lung transplant is a life-saving treatment for carefully selected patients with respiratory failure related to the infection with coronavirus disease-2019. Despite a complex pretransplant medical course, the posttransplant outcomes are excellent when performed by experienced centers.

Examining shortened versions of the Social Responsiveness Scale for use in autism spectrum disorder prediction and as a quantitative trait measure: Results from a validation study of 3-5 year old children.

Background: The Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS) is a 65-item measure yielding a continuous score capturing autism-related traits. Scores based on SRS item subsets have been analytically examined but administration of shortened versions has not been evaluated prospectively.

Objective: The goal of this study was to compare psychometric properties of two shortened versions of the SRS to the full 65-item SRS, in young children from both a clinical and general population setting.

Association of Cardiovascular Health Score With Early- and Later-Onset Diabetes and With Subsequent Vascular Complications of Diabetes.

BACKGROUND Little attention has been paid to how well the American Heart Association's cardiovascular health (CVH) score predicts early-onset diabetes in young adults. We investigated the association of CVH score with early- and later-onset diabetes and with subsequent complications of diabetes. METHODS AND RESULTS Our sample included 4547 Black and White adults in the CARDIA (Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults) study without diabetes at baseline (1985-1986; aged 18-30 years) with complete data on the CVH score at baseline, including smoking, body mass index, physical activity, diet quality, total cholesterol, blood pressure, and fasting blood glucose.

Attendance at Supervised Exercise Sessions and Walking Outcomes in Peripheral Artery Disease: Results From 2 Randomized Clinical Trials.

Background Supervised exercise therapy (SET) is the first-line therapy for walking impairment in peripheral artery disease (PAD). This study evaluated the association between attendance at SET and improved walking performance, compared with a control group, in PAD. Methods and Results Data from 2 randomized clinical trials of SET for PAD were combined.

Factors influencing the participation of Black and White Americans in Alzheimer's disease biomarker research.

Introduction: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a public health priority. AD biomarkers may vary based on race, but the recruitment of diverse participants has been challenging.

Methods: Three groups of Black and White participants with and without prior research advocacy or participation were interviewed individually or in focus groups to better understand perspectives related to AD biomarker research participation.

Normalization of mutant transcript to the wild-type transcript.

Current guidelines recommend that Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) patients with mutations should be monitored for measurable residual disease by quantifying the transcripts and normalizing them to transcripts. In this short report, a simple and highly accurate method to quantify the mutant transcript normalized to the wild-type transcript is presented. The percent mutant transcript correlates very well to the corresponding mutant allele frequency as determined by DNA-based methods allowing direct comparison of investigational studies that use RNA-based or DNA-based methods for monitoring mutations.

A consensus list of ultrasound competencies for graduating emergency medicine residents.

Objectives: Emergency ultrasound (EUS) is a critical component of emergency medicine (EM) resident education. Currently, there is no consensus list of competencies for EUS training, and graduating residents have varying levels of skill and comfort. The objective of this study was to define a widely accepted comprehensive list of EUS competencies for graduating EM residents through a modified Delphi method.

Background: Emoticons and emojis have become staple additions to modern-day communication. These graphical icons are now embedded in daily society through the various forms of popular social media and through users' personal electronic conversations. With ever-increasing use and inclusivity, exploration of the possible health care and dermatology applications of these tools is imperative.

Social Determinants of Cardiovascular Health in US Adolescents: National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys 1999 to 2014.

Background Cardiovascular health (CVH) is suboptimal in US adolescents. Social determinants of health (SDOH) may affect CVH. We examined SDOH by race and ethnicity and assessed for associations between SDOH and CVH among US adolescents.

Discovery and functional characterization of the oncogenicity and targetability of a novel gene fusion in pediatric angiosarcoma.

Angiosarcomas are rare, malignant soft tissue tumors in children that arise in a wide range of anatomical locations and have limited targeted therapies available. Here, we report a rare case of a pediatric angiosarcoma (pAS) with Li-Fraumeni syndrome (LFS) expressing a novel gene fusion. Although both and are established proto-oncogenes, our study is the first to describe the mechanistic role of - fusion arising via intrachromosomal rearrangement.

Lung transplantation in patients with lung disease secondary to coronavirus disease 2019 infection.

Purpose Of Review: In this article, we describe preoperative patient selection and outcomes of patients with lung disease secondary to infection from COVID-19 who receive lung transplantation.

Recent Findings: Lung transplants for patients with lung disease secondary to infection from COVID-19 have been performed successfully in over 200 patients in the United States. The preoperative course of these patients is somewhat atypical in comparison with patients who have had lung transplants related to chronic lung diseases, where there are more traditional indications for lung transplants.

Participation in Clinical Trials Among Academic Dermatologists Affiliated With Veterans Affairs Hospitals: Survey Study.

Background: Clinical trials have led to the development of new and effective therapies for many dermatologic conditions. To our knowledge, there is no published study that has quantified and described the degree of involvement in clinical trials among academic dermatologists and their university affiliates.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to characterize the involvement of academic dermatology departments in clinical trials research.

Wearable Seismocardiography-Based Assessment of Stroke Volume in Congenital Heart Disease.

Background Patients with congenital heart disease (CHD) are at risk for the development of low cardiac output and other physiologic derangements, which could be detected early through continuous stroke volume (SV) measurement. Unfortunately, existing SV measurement methods are limited in the clinic because of their invasiveness (eg, thermodilution), location (eg, cardiac magnetic resonance imaging), or unreliability (eg, bioimpedance). Multimodal wearable sensing, leveraging the seismocardiogram, a sternal vibration signal associated with cardiomechanical activity, offers a means to monitoring SV conveniently, affordably, and continuously.

Blood-Based Fingerprint of Cardiorespiratory Fitness and Long-Term Health Outcomes in Young Adulthood.

Background Cardiorespiratory fitness is a powerful predictor of health outcomes that is currently underused in primary prevention, especially in young adults. We sought to develop a blood-based biomarker of cardiorespiratory fitness that is easily translatable across populations. Methods and Results Maximal effort cardiopulmonary exercise testing for quantification of cardiorespiratory fitness (by peak oxygen uptake) and profiling of >200 metabolites at rest were performed in the FHS (Framingham Heart Study; 2016-2019).

Voluntary Cough Testing as a Clinical Indicator of Airway Protection in Cervical Spinal Cord Injury.

Objective: Voluntary cough testing (VCT) may be useful for determining aspiration risk in neurogenic dysphagia; however, has yet to be investigated in traumatic cervical spinal cord injury (tCSCI). The study explored if VCT may elucidate swallowing safety and kinematics related to airway protection in tCSCI survivors.

Methods: Ten inpatients, 13-73 days post-tCSCI (7 incomplete injuries), completed VCT and a modified barium swallowing study that was analyzed via the Penetration Aspiration Scale (PAS) and norm-referenced measures of swallowing events related to airway protection.

Location-specific signatures of Crohn's disease at a multi-omics scale.

Background: Crohn's disease (CD), an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) subtype, results from pathologic interactions between host cells and its resident gut microbes. CD manifests in both isolated disease locations (ileum or colon) or a combination of locations (ileocolonic). To date, a comprehensive understanding of how isolated CD subtypes influence molecular profiles remains outstanding.

Relationships between adiposity distribution and metabolic health in preconception women in South Africa.

Objective: Adipose tissue is a central regulator of metabolic health and a contributor to systemic inflammation. Patterns of adiposity deposition are important to understand for optimizing health. This study aimed to asses relationships between adiposity deposition and metabolic and inflammatory biomarkers in South African women prior to conception.

Development of an expert consensus checklist for emergency ultrasound.

Background: Within today's competency-based medical education, traditional set number proficiency benchmarks have been called into question. Checklists may help guide individualized training and standardized outcomes. However, multicenter expert consensus checklists based on established guidelines with supporting validity evidence have not been published for specific emergency ultrasound (EUS) applications.
