Introduction: Liver transplantation (LT) provides significant survival benefits to patients with unresectable HCC. In the United States, organ allocation policies for HCCs within the United Network for Organ Sharing criteria do not prioritize patients based on their differences in oncological characteristics. This study assessed whether transplant-associated survival benefits (TASBs) vary among patients with different tumor burden scores (TBS) measured at the time of listing.

Objective: Animal models of nerve injury are important for studying nerve injury and repair, particularly for interventions that cannot be studied in humans. However, the vast majority of gait analysis in animals has been limited to univariate analysis even though gait data is highly multi-dimensional. As a result, little is known about how various spatiotemporal components of the gait relate to each other in the context of peripheral nerve injury and trauma.

Background: Acid sphingomyelinase deficiency (ASMD) and Gaucher disease type 1 (GD1) are rare inherited sphingolipid disorders with multisystemic manifestations, including liver disease and dyslipidemia. Despite effective treatments, insufficient disease awareness frequently results in diagnostic delays during which irreversible complications occur. We delineated the shared and distinctive features of hepatic, splenic, and lipoprotein phenotypes in ASMD and GD1.

Cardiovascular adverse events (CVAEs) are recognized complications of chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapies. However, data are lacking regarding subtypes of adverse events that develop in patients with different malignancies, and little is known about the timeframe in which different cardiotoxicities are most likely to occur post-CAR T-cell therapies. In this study, 211 patients, including 138 lymphoma patients and 66 myeloma patients who received CAR T-cell therapies were retrospectively identified.

It Is Not Just About Storing Energy: The Multifaceted Role of Creatine Metabolism on Cancer Biology and Immunology.

Int J Mol Sci

December 2024

Department of Neurological Surgery, Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University, 676 N St. Clair, Suite 2210, Chicago, IL 60611, USA.

Creatine, a naturally occurring compound in mammals, is crucial in energy metabolism, particularly within muscle and brain tissues. While creatine metabolism in cancer has been studied for several decades, emerging studies are beginning to clarify the sometimes-contradictory role creatine has in either the promotion or inhibition of cancer. On one hand, creatine can directly enhance anti-tumor CD8+ T-cell activity and induce tumor apoptosis, contributing to antitumor immunity.

Despite evidence of the effectiveness of early intervention (EI) programs, eligible infants often experience delays in initiation of services or fail to receive services entirely. Disparities have been documented, including lower enrollment rates for infants with public insurance. The objective of this pilot study was to evaluate the feasibility of initiating home physical therapy (PT) services promptly after neonatal or cardiac intensive care unit (NICU/CICU) discharge for infants with public insurance and to assess early motor outcomes for children who received study therapy compared with a standard of care group.

Neurophysiologic Innovations in ALS: Enhancing Diagnosis, Monitoring, and Treatment Evaluation.

Brain Sci

December 2024

Djavad Mowafaghian Centre for Brain Health, Division of Neurology, Department of Medicine, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, BC V6T 1Z3, Canada.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive disease of both upper motor neurons (UMNs) and lower motor neurons (LMNs) leading invariably to decline in motor function. The clinical exam is foundational to the diagnosis of the disease, and ordinal severity scales are used to track its progression. However, the lack of objective biomarkers of disease classification and progression delay clinical trial enrollment, muddle inclusion criteria, and limit accurate assessment of drug efficacy.

Advances for Managing Pancreatic Cystic Lesions: Integrating Imaging and AI Innovations.

Cancers (Basel)

December 2024

Machine and Hybrid Intelligence Lab, Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University, Chicago, IL 60611, USA.

Pancreatic cystic lesions (PCLs) represent a spectrum of non-neoplasms and neoplasms with varying malignant potential, posing significant challenges in diagnosis and management. While some PCLs are precursors to pancreatic cancer, others remain benign, necessitating accurate differentiation for optimal patient care. Conventional approaches to PCL management rely heavily on radiographic imaging, and endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) guided fine-needle aspiration (FNA), coupled with clinical and biochemical data.

Amino acid insertions and deletions (indels) are among the most common protein mutations and necessitate changes to a protein's backbone geometry. Examining how indels affect protein folding stability (and especially how indels can increase stability) can help reveal the role of backbone energetics on stability and introduce new protein engineering strategies.
