Seasonal variation of blood pressure (BP) is a topic in cardiology that has gained more attention throughout the years. Although it is extensively documented that BP increases in seasons coupled with lower temperatures, there are still many gaps in this knowledge field that need to be explored. Notably, seasonal variation of BP phenotypes, such as masked and white coat hypertension, and the impact of air pollution, latitude, and altitude on seasonal variation of BP are still poorly described in the literature, and the levels of the existing evidence are low.

Therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) of 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) is strongly recommended because of its large inter-individual pharmacokinetic variability, narrow therapeutic window, and incidence of toxicity. However, there are several factors that limit the application of TDM in clinical settings. Considering the intrinsic advantages of dried microsamples, such as minimally invasive sampling, analyte stability, and cost-effective logistics, this study aimed to develop a method for the determination of 5-FU in dried blood spots (DBS) using ultra-high liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) and to evaluate its clinical application.

Canine parvovirus (CPV) is a highly pathogenic virus that affects dogs, especially puppies. CPV is believed to have evolved from feline panleukopenia virus (FPV), eventually giving rise to three antigenic types, CPV-2a, 2b, and 2c. CPV-2 is recognized for its resilience in contaminated environments, ease of transmission among dogs, and pathogenicity for puppies.

Workplace drug testing primarily relies on urine analysis, targeting multiple compounds with varying physicochemical characteristics. Biocompatible solid-phase microextraction (BioSPME) is a miniaturized solid-phase extraction technique that enables the simultaneous extraction and preconcentration of analytes directly from the biological matrix. The BioSPME procedure consisted of the sequential extraction of 50-μl urine samples using LC Tips C18 in basic and acidic pH, followed by desorption with methanol and -hexane, respectively.

The use of cocaine affects several systems and organs of the human body and the consumption of this substance leads to an increase in the production of reactive oxygen species, and to the reduction of antioxidant defenses. The aim of this study was to evaluate the oxidative stress (OS), biochemical and hematological parameters in patients hospitalized for treatment of cocaine addiction, comparing levels at hospital admission and discharge. Forty patients were included in the study.

Industrial wastewater causes several environmental and health issues due to its composition, and hydrogen sulfide is one of the main contaminants from various industrial activities, including tannery wastewater treatment plants. This study aimed to evaluate the application of a modified tannin to remove hydrogen sulfide, chemical oxygen demand, total nitrogen, color, and turbidity from tannery wastewater and to reduce the atmospheric emission of sulfides. The wastewater was treated using modified tannin, aluminum sulfate, and a combination of both.

We created the "3-dimensional synaptic puzzle" (3Dsp) as an educational resource for the physiology teaching of synaptic transmission (ST). In this study, we aimed to apply and evaluate the use of 3Dsp. For this, we divided 175 university students from public and private universities into two groups: ) control (CT; students that were only exposed to traditional class or video lessons about ST), and; ) test (3Dsp; students that were exposed to the 3Dsp practical class in addition to the traditional theoretical class).

Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) may be successfully used to comprehensively monitor and determine the scale and dynamics of some infections in the community. We monitored severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) RNA in raw wastewater samples from Porto Alegre, Southern Brazil. The samples were collected and analyzed every week between May 2020 to May 2021.

This study aimed to apply the comet assay on Aegla platensis crabs as a suitable non-destructive approach for in situ monitoring of freshwater genotoxicity. Animals were captured during four sampling periods in a stream under minor anthropogenic impacts in Southern Brazil. Crabs were captured with a hand net, then the hemolymph samples were collected, and the animals were released into the stream after a 20-min recovery time.

Liposomes are among the most studied nanostructures. They are effective carriers of active substances both in the clinical field, such as delivering genes and drugs, and in the food industry, such as promoting the controlled release of bioactive substances, including food preservatives. However, toxicological screenings must be performed to ensure the safety of nanoformulations.

Introduction: The handling of antineoplastic drugs should follow strict supervision and safety rules to minimize the occupational exposure risks to professionals involved. The external surface contamination of drug vials is recognized as a health risk. So, our goal was to determine if there is residual contamination on the vials and containers surface of the antineoplastic drugs doxorubicin (DOX) and cyclophosphamide (CP).

Dried blood spot sampling has been reported for on-site collection of specimens, but measurements are affected by blood hematocrit, and special handling is required, especially for forensic applications. The hemaPEN blood collection device was developed to produce spots with constant volume. Linearity between 1 and 500 ng/ml was shown for cocaine and the metabolites benzoylecgonine and cocaethylene.

However, the result of these efforts, in terms of value generated for students, remains little explored in the literature. This study aims to analyze the relationship between co-creation capacities (CCs) and the types of values generated for their students.

Tanneries are considered some of the most polluting industries due to the heavy use of toxic compounds, most of which are released into water bodies, thus exerting adverse effects on aquatic biota. However, the effects on organisms of treated effluents when released into the natural environment are rarely evaluated. This study aims to assess the physicochemical parameters of a tannery effluent after treatment (TE) at a Common Effluent Treatment Plant as well as the water of the receiving stream and to evaluate cytogenotoxic effects in Allium cepa.

Genomic sequencing is essential to track the evolution and spread of SARS-CoV-2, optimize molecular tests, treatments, vaccines, and guide public health responses. To investigate the global SARS-CoV-2 genomic surveillance, we used sequences shared via GISAID to estimate the impact of sequencing intensity and turnaround times on variant detection in 189 countries. In the first two years of the pandemic, 78% of high-income countries sequenced >0.

It is imperative to remove phosphate from the aquatic system. This nutrient in excess can cause environmental problems such as eutrophication. Therefore, aiming to enhance phosphate removal, this work presents a novel adsorbent developed from the construction of Ca/Fe layer double hydroxides (CaFe/LDH) supported onto biochar physically activated with CO [CaFe/biochar (CO)].

The determination of ethyl glucuronide (EtG) and ethyl sulfate (EtS) in blood has been proposed in clinical and forensic applications to identify recent alcohol consumption. Also, there is a growing interest on the use of dried blood spots (DBS) in toxicological analysis, allowing increased stability of the analytes and simplifying sample transportation and storage. This study presents the development and validation of a method for quantifying EtG and EtS in DBS using ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS-MS).
