Article Synopsis
  • Chronic fluoride exposure can lead to dental fluorosis, raising public health concerns regarding its effects on human health and DNA.
  • The study involved 40 participants (20 with dental fluorosis and 20 without) from Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, assessing genetic instability using various assays to analyze DNA damage and gene expression related to fluoride exposure.
  • Results showed that individuals with dental fluorosis had increased micronucleus frequencies, oxidative DNA damage, shorter telomeres, altered gene expression, and changes in inflammatory responses compared to the control group.

Seasonal variation of blood pressure (BP) is a topic in cardiology that has gained more attention throughout the years. Although it is extensively documented that BP increases in seasons coupled with lower temperatures, there are still many gaps in this knowledge field that need to be explored. Notably, seasonal variation of BP phenotypes, such as masked and white coat hypertension, and the impact of air pollution, latitude, and altitude on seasonal variation of BP are still poorly described in the literature, and the levels of the existing evidence are low.

Evaluation of dried blood spots as an alternative sampling strategy for 5-fluorouracil monitoring: From method development to clinical application.

J Pharm Biomed Anal

October 2023

Graduate Program on Toxicology and Analytical Toxicology, Feevale University, Novo Hamburgo, RS, Brazil; Toxicological Analysis Laboratory, Institute of Health Sciences, Feevale University, Novo Hamburgo, RS, Brazil.

Therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) of 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) is strongly recommended because of its large inter-individual pharmacokinetic variability, narrow therapeutic window, and incidence of toxicity. However, there are several factors that limit the application of TDM in clinical settings. Considering the intrinsic advantages of dried microsamples, such as minimally invasive sampling, analyte stability, and cost-effective logistics, this study aimed to develop a method for the determination of 5-FU in dried blood spots (DBS) using ultra-high liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) and to evaluate its clinical application.

Canine parvovirus (CPV) is a highly pathogenic virus that affects dogs, especially puppies. CPV is believed to have evolved from feline panleukopenia virus (FPV), eventually giving rise to three antigenic types, CPV-2a, 2b, and 2c. CPV-2 is recognized for its resilience in contaminated environments, ease of transmission among dogs, and pathogenicity for puppies.

Workplace drug testing primarily relies on urine analysis, targeting multiple compounds with varying physicochemical characteristics. Biocompatible solid-phase microextraction (BioSPME) is a miniaturized solid-phase extraction technique that enables the simultaneous extraction and preconcentration of analytes directly from the biological matrix. The BioSPME procedure consisted of the sequential extraction of 50-μl urine samples using LC Tips C18 in basic and acidic pH, followed by desorption with methanol and -hexane, respectively.

The use of cocaine affects several systems and organs of the human body and the consumption of this substance leads to an increase in the production of reactive oxygen species, and to the reduction of antioxidant defenses. The aim of this study was to evaluate the oxidative stress (OS), biochemical and hematological parameters in patients hospitalized for treatment of cocaine addiction, comparing levels at hospital admission and discharge. Forty patients were included in the study.

Industrial wastewater causes several environmental and health issues due to its composition, and hydrogen sulfide is one of the main contaminants from various industrial activities, including tannery wastewater treatment plants. This study aimed to evaluate the application of a modified tannin to remove hydrogen sulfide, chemical oxygen demand, total nitrogen, color, and turbidity from tannery wastewater and to reduce the atmospheric emission of sulfides. The wastewater was treated using modified tannin, aluminum sulfate, and a combination of both.

We created the "3-dimensional synaptic puzzle" (3Dsp) as an educational resource for the physiology teaching of synaptic transmission (ST). In this study, we aimed to apply and evaluate the use of 3Dsp. For this, we divided 175 university students from public and private universities into two groups: ) control (CT; students that were only exposed to traditional class or video lessons about ST), and; ) test (3Dsp; students that were exposed to the 3Dsp practical class in addition to the traditional theoretical class).

Molecules

January 2023

Laboratory of Biochemistry and Applied Microbiology, Institute of Food Science and Technology, Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre 91501-970, Brazil.

Liposomes are among the most studied nanostructures. They are effective carriers of active substances both in the clinical field, such as delivering genes and drugs, and in the food industry, such as promoting the controlled release of bioactive substances, including food preservatives. However, toxicological screenings must be performed to ensure the safety of nanoformulations.

J Oncol Pharm Pract

December 2023

Center for Intravenous Drug Preparation, Department of Pharmacy, Hospital de Clínicas Porto Alegre, Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil.

Introduction: The handling of antineoplastic drugs should follow strict supervision and safety rules to minimize the occupational exposure risks to professionals involved. The external surface contamination of drug vials is recognized as a health risk. So, our goal was to determine if there is residual contamination on the vials and containers surface of the antineoplastic drugs doxorubicin (DOX) and cyclophosphamide (CP).

Tanneries are considered some of the most polluting industries due to the heavy use of toxic compounds, most of which are released into water bodies, thus exerting adverse effects on aquatic biota. However, the effects on organisms of treated effluents when released into the natural environment are rarely evaluated. This study aims to assess the physicochemical parameters of a tannery effluent after treatment (TE) at a Common Effluent Treatment Plant as well as the water of the receiving stream and to evaluate cytogenotoxic effects in Allium cepa.
