Safeguarding aquatic ecosystems from invasive species requires a comprehensive understanding and quantification of their impacts, as this information is crucial for developing effective management strategies. In particular, aquatic invasive plants cause profound alterations to aquatic ecosystem composition, structure and productivity. Monetary cost assessments have, however, lacked at large scales for this group.

Throughout humanity's development, the medicinal use of plants has evolved as an observational and empirical matter; Yorubá culture uses Kalanchoe sp. as universal antidotes. They are believed to be "ewé òdúndún" or plants of goodness and are traditionally and religiously used in preparations to treat diseases and physiological disorders.

This article explores the progressive integration of -omics methods, including genomics, metabolomics, and proteomics, into sports research, highlighting the development of the concept of "sportomics." We discuss how sportomics can be used to comprehend the multilevel metabolism during exercise in real-life conditions faced by athletes, enabling potential personalized interventions to improve performance and recovery and reduce injuries, all with a minimally invasive approach and reduced time. Sportomics may also support highly personalized investigations, including the implementation of -of-1 clinical trials and the curation of extensive datasets through long-term follow-up of athletes, enabling tailored interventions for athletes based on their unique physiological responses to different conditions.

The proteasome plays key roles in synaptic plasticity and memory by regulating protein turnover, quality control, and elimination of oxidized/misfolded proteins. Here, we investigate proteasome function and localization at synapses in Alzheimer's disease (AD) post-mortem brain tissue and in experimental models. We found a marked increase in ubiquitinylated proteins in post-mortem AD hippocampi compared to controls.

Non-native species threaten biodiversity conservation and ecosystem functioning. Management at early-invasion stages can prevent ecological and socioeconomic impacts, but rely on the identification of drivers of non-native species occurrence at distinct scales. Here, we identify environmental and anthropogenic correlates of non-native fish richness across estuaries worldwide.

Objective: Biopsies of peripheral nerve tumors (PNTs) are often used to plan an efficient treatment strategy. However, performing a biopsy is controversial when the mass is likely to be a benign PNT (BPNT). The aim of this study was to evaluate the side effects of biopsies in patients with potential PNTs.

Although nopal cladodes are a valuable bioactive compound source, they have historically been underused. This review draws a parallel between quantitative and qualitative data from the most outstanding scientific research concerning nopal cladodes in the last five years by implementing a bibliometric analysis. Italy, Mexico, Brazil, and Morocco accounted for approximately 55% of the 111 articles selected for this review.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of topical anesthetic and fluorescein drops on intraocular pressure (IOP), central corneal thickness (CCT) and biomechanical properties as measured by Corvis ST (CST-Oculus; Wezlar, Germany) in healthy eyes. A cross-sectional observational study was conducted on 46 healthy patients. The CST measurements were obtained before and immediately after the instillation of topical anesthetic and fluorescein drops.

Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) is a fruit widely consumed by the Brazilian population; however, its rind is usually discarded, despite its nutritional value. This work aimed to develop a watermelon rind flour (WRF) and a fiber-rich bread. The WRF was submitted to microbiological analysis, proximate composition, antioxidant activity, and a profile of phenolic compounds.

Purpose: The Corvis Biomechanical Index-Laser Vision Correction (CBI-LVC) is a biomechanical index to detect ectasia in post-refractive surgery patients (PRK, LASIK, SMILE). This study aims to evaluate the distribution of the CBI-LVC in stable patients who underwent Phototherapeutic Keratectomy (PTK) compared to PRK patients.
Methods: Patients who underwent PRK and PTK performed between 2000 and 2018 in Humanitas Research Hospital, Rozzano, Milan, Italy and remained stable for at least four years post-surgery were included.

Background & Aims: Recent evidence suggests that moderate coffee intake is associated with multiple health benefits, including lower risk of obesity, sarcopenia and cardiovascular disease (CVD) in the general population. However, to date, no study has evaluated these associations in kidney transplant recipients (KTR). The aim of the present study was to evaluate the association of habitual coffee consumption with obesity, sarcopenia, bone mineral density and CVD risk factors in KTR.

The present study aimed to evaluate and compare feeding responses of the non-native and native bivalves, the dark false mussel and the scorched mussel , respectively, by offering different concentrations of seston from the coastal lagoon where these species coexist after dark false mussel introduction (Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon, Rio de Janeiro-Brazil). For this purpose, independent laboratory experiments were carried out under five concentrations of seston to test the differences in clearance and ingestion rates of bivalves as a function of increasing concentrations of suspended particulate matter (SPM) on seston. In addition, from the integrated analysis of data obtained in experiments, it can be inferred about the efficiency levels of these species to remove SPM from seston and their effects on water turbidity and nutrient concentrations (total carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus).

Objective: The repercussions of ischemia-reperfusion and inflammatory response to surgical injury may compromise the return of physiologic processes in video-laparoscopic surgeries. Dexmedetomidine, as an adjuvant drug in general anesthesia, alters the neuroinflammatory reaction, provides better clinical outcomes in the perioperative period, and may reduce the excessive use of chronic medication in patients with a history of addiction. This study evaluated the immunomodulatory potential of dexmedetomidine on perioperative organ function in video-laparoscopic cholecystectomy patients.

The microbial consortia of lactic acid bacteria and yeast of sourdough can partially degrade gluten subunits associated with wheat-related diseases. This study evaluated how sourdough fermentation interferes with wheat protein profiles and if it can be related to the reduction expression of allergenic proteins. Samples from five bread doughs (Saccharomyces cerevisiae -C1; chemical acidification -C2, and three sourdoughs formulations -S1, S2, and S3) were sequentially extracted, digested, and submitted to shotgun label-free proteomic analysis.

Proving clinical superiority of personalized care models in interventional and surgical pain management is challenging. The apparent difficulties may arise from the inability to standardize complex surgical procedures that often involve multiple steps. Ensuring the surgery is performed the same way every time is nearly impossible.

Background: Hyaluronic acid is synthesised in plasma membranes and can be found in extracellular tissues. It has been suggested that the application of hyaluronic acid to chronic wounds may promote healing, and the mechanism may be due to its ability to maintain a moist wound environment which helps cell migration in the wound bed.
Objectives: To evaluate the effects of hyaluronic acid (and its derivatives) on the healing of chronic wounds.
