Objective: To evaluate the influence of pre-existing maternal diabetes mellitus on fetal myocardial performance index and systolic-to-diastolic duration ratio.

Methods: Prospective cohort study included 179 pregnant women between 20 and 36w6d, divided into 3 groups: Group 1 (120, normal), Group 2 (31, type 1 diabetes mellitus), and Group 3 (28, type 2 diabetes mellitus). Systolic-to-diastolic duration ratio was calculated as the sum of isovolumic contraction time and ejection time divided by the sum of isovolumic relaxation time and ventricular filling time.

  • The pilot clinical trial assessed the impact of vestibular stimulation on late preterm infants' movement, sleep-wakefulness, and pain using Hammock-positioning therapy (HPT) and a conventional method.
  • Infants were divided into two groups: one received HPT while the other underwent standard vestibular stimulation, and various assessments were used to measure outcomes.
  • Results indicated that the HPT group showed better movement repertoire and improved sleep-wakefulness, with similar positive changes observed in the conventional group.

Background And Objective: To analyze the association between different domains and intensities of physical activity (PA) in adults.

Methods: 269 participants were randomly selected in a community-dwelling representative sampling process. The habitual PA practice was assessed in different domains (occupational, sports practice, and leisure time/commuting) using Baecke's questionnaire and in different intensities (light, moderate, vigorous, and very vigorous) by accelerometry.

Retinol-binding protein 4 is a potential biomarker of changes in lean mass in postmenopausal women.

Appl Physiol Nutr Metab

November 2024

Applied Physiology, Nutrition and Exercise Research Group (PhyNEr), Exercise Biology Laboratory (BioEx), Institute of Health Sciences, Federal University of Triangulo Mineiro (UFTM), Uberaba, Minas Gerais, Brazil.

Article Synopsis
  • Identifying biomarkers like retinol-binding protein 4 (RBP4) may enable early detection of muscle loss and aid in developing new therapies, particularly for postmenopausal women.
  • The study followed postmenopausal women for 12 months to assess the relationship between initial RBP4 levels and changes in appendicular lean mass (ALM), where higher baseline RBP4 was correlated with greater muscle loss.
  • Results indicated that women with higher RBP4 levels experienced a more significant reduction in muscle mass, suggesting that RBP4 could serve as a useful biomarker for monitoring muscle health in this demographic.

Rev Bras Med Trab

September 2024

Programa de Mestrado Profissional em Administração Pública em Rede, Universidade Federal do Triângulo Mineiro (UFTM), Uberaba, MG, Brazil.

Article Synopsis
  • Presenteeism is when workers show up to work despite being sick, and it’s less studied among public sector managers, who often face high stress and burnout due to complex workplace challenges.!* -
  • A study involving 106 managers at a Brazilian federal university found that over half reported working while unwell, and a significant portion experienced decreased job performance linked to presenteeism.!* -
  • The research highlighted that factors like high job demands, low control, and inadequate social support were associated with increased emotional exhaustion and dehumanization, leading to worsened work performance among presenteeist workers.!*

Cardiovascular disease is one of the leading causes of mortality worldwide, primarily driven by atherosclerosis, a chronic inflammatory condition contributing significantly to fatalities. Various biological determinants affecting cardiovascular health across different age and sex groups have been identified. In this context, recent attention has focused on the potential therapeutic and preventive role of increasing circulating levels of heat shock protein 27 (plasma HSP27) in combating atherosclerosis.

Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the influence of the cesarean section scars on the mean pulsatility index (PI) of the uterine artery Doppler between 20 and 34 weeks of gestation. A secondary objective was to assess the association between previous cesarean section and adverse maternal/perinatal outcomes.

Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted with pregnant women who had their deliveries between March 2014 and February 2023.

Hepatic noradrenergic innervation acts via CREB/CRTC2 to activate gluconeogenesis during cold.

Metabolism

August 2024

Department of Physiology, Ribeirão Preto Medical School, University of São Paulo, Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo, Brazil. Electronic address:

Background And Aim: Although it is well established that hormones like glucagon stimulates gluconeogenesis via the PKA-mediated phosphorylation of CREB and dephosphorylation of the cAMP-regulated CREB coactivators CRTC2, the role of neural signals in the regulation of gluconeogenesis remains uncertain.

Methods And Results: Here, we characterize the noradrenergic bundle architecture in mouse liver; we show that the sympathoexcitation induced by acute cold exposure promotes hyperglycemia and upregulation of gluconeogenesis via triggering of the CREB/CRTC2 pathway. Following its induction by dephosphorylation, CRTC2 translocates to the nucleus and drives the transcription of key gluconeogenic genes.

Intramuscular adipose tissue, muscle area, and power as predictors of performance in breast cancer survivors.

Support Care Cancer

May 2024

Applied Physiology, Nutrition and Exercise Research Group (PhyNER), Exercise Biology Research Lab (BioEx), Federal University of Triangulo Mineiro (UFTM), Avenida Tutunas, 490, Uberaba, Minas Gerais, 38061-500, Brazil.

Purpose: The decline in physical performance, assessed by physical tests such as the timed up and go (TUG) test, is a consequence of reduced physiological reserves at higher levels of a hierarchical process. This occurs due to changes in muscle architecture, including atrophy and fat infiltration into the muscles, which in turn lead to changes in muscle function, resulting in reduced muscle strength and power and, consequently, affecting physical performance. This study investigated predictive factors for physical performance in breast cancer survivor (BCS), focusing on intramuscular adipose tissue (IMAT), quadríceps muscle area (QMA), and muscular power.

Article Synopsis
  • * It involved evaluating 85 brain MRI scans using different sequences, with a specific analysis on intra- and inter-rater reliability determined through ICC metrics.
  • * Results indicate that while the 3 mm SE-T1w and 3 mm resliced GrE-T1w images show high reliability, the 1 mm 3D-GrE-T1w sequence is less consistent, suggesting the use of a 3 mm resliced GrE-T1w for more reliable BH assessment.
