Medical Sciences Graduate Program, Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC), Florianópolis, SC, Brazil; Neurology Division, UFSC, Florianópolis, SC, Brazil; Centre for Applied Neurosciences, UFSC, SC, Brazil.

Epilepsy is characterized by recurrent, chronic, and unprovoked seizures. Epilepsy has a significant negative impact on a patient's quality of life even if seizures are well controlled. In addition to the distress caused by seizures, patients with epilepsy (PwE) may suffer from cognitive impairment with serious social consequences such as poor interpersonal relationships, loss of employment, and reduced social networks.

Research into microbial interactions during coffee processing is essential for developing new methods that adapt to climate change and improve flavor, thus enhancing the resilience and quality of global coffee production. This study aimed to investigate how microbial communities interact and contribute to flavor development in coffee processing within humid subtropical climates. Employing Illumina sequencing for microbial dynamics analysis, and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) integrated with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) for metabolite assessment, the study revealed intricate microbial diversity and associated metabolic activities.

This study introduces further insights from the hit-to-lead optimization process involving a series of benzimidazole derivatives acting as inhibitors of the cruzain enzyme, which targets Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative parasite of Chagas disease. Here, we present the design, synthesis and biological evaluation of 30 new compounds as a third generation of benzimidazole analogues with trypanocidal activity, aiming to enhance our understanding of their pharmacokinetic profiles and establish a structure-metabolism relationships within the series. The design of these new analogues was guided by the analysis of previous pharmacokinetic results, considering identified metabolic sites and biotransformation studies.

Adenosinergic system and nucleoside transporters in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder: Current findings.

Neurosci Biobehav Rev

September 2024

Graduate Program of Neurosciences and Department of Neurobiology, Institute of Biology, Universidade Federal Fluminense, Niterói, Brazil. Electronic address:

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder with high heterogeneity that can affect individuals of any age. It is characterized by three main symptoms: inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. These neurobehavioral alterations and neurochemical and pharmacological findings are mainly attributed to unbalanced catecholaminergic signaling, especially involving dopaminergic pathways within prefrontal and striatal areas.

Perspective from developers: Tissue-engineered products for skin wound healing.

Int J Pharm

July 2024

Graduate Program in Pharmacology, Center of Biological Sciences, Federal University of Santa Catarina- UFSC, Florianópolis, SC, Brazil. Electronic address:

Tissue-engineered products (TEPs) are at the forefront of developmental medicines, precisely where monoclonal antibodies and recombinant cytokines were 30 years ago. TEPs development for treating skin wounds has become a fast-growing field as it offers the potential to find novel therapeutic approaches for treating pathologies that currently have limited or no effective alternatives. This review aims to provide the reader with the process of translating an idea from the laboratory bench to clinical practice, specifically in the context of TEPs designing for skin wound healing.

June 2024

Laboratory of Investigation in Chronic Diseases - LIDoC, Department of Physiological Sciences, Center of Biological Sciences, Federal University of Santa Catarina - UFSC, Florianópolis, Brazil; Multicentric Graduate Program in Physiology, Center of Biological Sciences, Federal University of Santa Catarina - UFSC, Florianópolis, Santa Catarina, Brazil. Electronic address:

Whether the endocrine pancreas exhibits structural features to couple with dietary patterns is not fully explored. Considering the lack of data comparing endocrine pancreas and islet cell distribution among different bat species in the same study, we considered this an opportunity to explore the topic, including five species within three different predominant diets. For this, we applied morphometric techniques to compare the islets of frugivorous Artibeus lituratus and Carollia perspicillata, insectivorous Molossus molossus and Myotis nigricans, and nectarivorous Glossophaga soricina bats.

Protein structure prediction (PSP) remains a central challenge in computational biology due to its inherent complexity and high dimensionality. While numerous heuristic approaches have appeared in the literature, their success varies. The AB off-lattice model, which characterizes proteins as sequences of A (hydrophobic) and B (hydrophilic) beads, presents a simplified perspective on PSP.
