Physical factors and tissue characteristics determine the transmission of light through tissues. One of the significant clinical limitations of photobiomodulation is the quantification of fluence delivered at application sites and optical penetration depth in vivo. There is also the difficulty of determining the distances of the application points to cover a uniformly irradiated area.

The demand for sustainable, healthy, and pesticide-free food has grown in recent years. Agroecological seeds cannot receive chemical treatment, as pesticides present toxicological and environmental risks, requiring the development of alternative methods for disease control, such as the use of essential oils. In this study, orange essential oil was extracted and encapsulated in zein nanoparticles by the nanoprecipitation method.

A technique for fabricating lingual rest seats and indirect incisal restorations using a digital workflow is described. After intraoral scanning, the incisal edge position of the restoration and lingual rest seats for a subsequent removable partial denture (RPD) were designed digitally. Adaptation was evaluated with trial restorations, and definitive restorations were printed from a 3-dimensional resin (Varseo Smile Crown Plus Bego; Wilcos).

Objective: The main aim of this study was to evaluate the morphological aspects and distribution of granules composed of deproteinized bovine bone mineral (DBBM) and human dentin-derived bone graft (HDBG) into a putty consistency mixture.

Materials And Methods: DBBM or HDBG were mixed with an alginate-based hydrogel at two different granule/hydrogel ratio (1:1 and 1:3) and divided into four test groups while two control groups were composed of DBBM or HDBG free of hydrogel. Groups of specimens were cross-sectioned for morphological evaluation by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) at backscattered electrons mode.

The present study evaluated the effects of supplementing VM in grazing cattle during the rearing phase on performance and carcass quality of beef cattle in the finishing phase. Two experiments with a randomized block design were conducted in consecutive years to contrast two post-weaning supplementation strategies using VM at 45 mg/100 kg body weight (BW). In the first year, treatments were protein supplement in the dry season and mineral supplement in the rainy season versus the addition of VM both in the protein and mineral supplements.

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the association between dietary patterns and biochemical markers related to diabetes mellitus (DM): glucose, insulin, glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance index from 35 454 Brazilian adolescents 12 to 17 y of age.

Methods: Dietary patterns were derived using factor analysis by the principal components method. The data originated from the school-based study ERICA (Study of Cardiovascular Risk in Adolescents) carried out between 2013 and 2014.

Background & Aims: Fatty acids (FAs) of the omega-3 and omega-6 family are considered essential, and adequate intake seems to be associated with lower risk of developing chronic non-communicable diseases. The objective was to evaluate the association of omega-3 and omega-6 FAs dietary intake with the prevalence of MS and its components waist circumference (WC), blood pressure (BP), fasting blood glucose, triglycerides and High Density Lipoprotein - cholesterol (HDL-c) in Brazilian adolescents aged 12-17 years.

Methods: This is a school-based cross-sectional investigation, using data from the Study of Cardiovascular Risks in Adolescents (ERICA), carried out between 2013 and 2014.

Local treatment of canine urothelial carcinoma (UC) of the bladder is a challenge. More than 90% of the cases invade the muscular layer, more than 50% develop on bladder sites with a difficult surgical approach and often requiring radical surgical procedures. This study aims to evaluate the safety and feasibility of electrochemotherapy (ECT) with intravenous bleomycin (BLM) as a local therapy for bladder UC.

Magnetic hydrogel based on xylan, poly (acrylic acid), and maghemite as adsorbent material for methylene blue adsorption: experimental design, kinetic, and isotherm.

Environ Sci Pollut Res Int

September 2024

POLIMAT, Grupo de Estudos em Materiais Poliméricos, Chemistry Department, Federal University of Santa Catarina-UFSC, Campus Reitor João David Ferreira Lima, s/n-88040-900, Florianópolis, Brazil.

A magnetic hydrogel based on xylan (X), poly (acrylic acid), and maghemite (γ-FeO) named HXA-FeO was synthesized, characterized, and applied as an alternative material to remove methylene blue (MB) from aqueous media by adsorption. Maghemite was synthesized by coprecipitation method and later incorporated in the hydrogel matrix synthesized by free radical polymerization. The characterization studies included FTIR, DSC, XRD, VSM, Zeta Potential, TGA, SEM, TEM, and N adsorption isotherms (BET).

Photocatalytic membranes (PM) have been investigated as an antifouling strategy for membrane separation processes. Coating ceramic membranes with photocatalytic layers can provide a highly active surface capable of degrading foulants and smaller molecules improving the membrane's performance when the surface is irradiated by a suitable light. Nevertheless, the coating process often leads to pore blockage due to the formation or deposition of thick layers of photocatalyst on membrane surfaces, which modifies the original membranes' average pore size and reduces membrane permeability.

This study evaluated the effect of heating on the physicochemical properties and surface changes of tricalcium silicate sealers. Three tricalcium silicate root canal sealers (Bio-C Sealer, BioRoot-RCS, EndoSequence BC Sealer), and one epoxy resin-based sealer (AH Plus; control) were tested. The effect of heating on setting time (ST) and flowability were assessed according to ANSI/ADA 57 and ISO 6876 standards.

Adenosine A receptors control generalization of contextual fear in rats.

Transl Psychiatry

October 2023

CNC- Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology, University of Coimbra, 3004-517, Coimbra, Portugal.

Article Synopsis
  • Fear learning is crucial for survival, but traumatic experiences can lead to excessive fear responses, as seen in PTSD, through abnormal fear consolidation and overgeneralization.* -
  • Research examined the role of adenosine A receptors (AR) in fear memory; blocking these receptors after fear conditioning increased fear generalization, while activating them reduced it.* -
  • Findings indicate that ARs influence long-term potentiation in key brain areas during fear consolidation, suggesting they could be a target for treatments addressing fear-related disorders like PTSD.*
