This work aims to provide a basis for the enhancement of fucoxanthin (FCX) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) biosynthesis in the microalga Phaeodactylum tricornutum using metabolomics and computational biology. To achieve this, both targeted (UHPLC and GC-FID) and untargeted (FTIR and NMR) analyses were conducted throughout various stages of cell cultivation. Targeted analyses revealed that EPA concentrations peaked at the end of the logarithmic growth phase, while fucoxanthin levels remained consistent from the onset of this phase through to the stationary phase.

Proper waste management and sustainable energy production are crucial for human development. For this purpose, this study evaluates the impact of blending percentage on energy recovery potential and environmental benefits of co-combustion of wastewater sludge and Brazilian low-rank coal. The sludge and coal were characterised in terms of their potential as fuel and co-combustion tests were carried out in a pilot-scale bubbling fluidised bed focused on the influence of the percentage of sludge mixture on the behaviour of co-combustion with coal in terms of flue gas composition and fluidised bed temperature stability.

Personal care products (PCPs), such as sunscreens, are usually found in various aquatic ecosystems at low concentrations (ng l to µg l). However, there is limited information regarding their effects on marine bivalves. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the sublethal effects of environmental concentrations (1 and 100 µg l) of benzophenone-3 (BP-3) in Crassostrea gigas oysters after 1 and 7 days of exposure.

Macauba is an underexplored palm with significant potential for food-grade vegetable oil production. Its fruits yield two distinct sources of oil, the pulp and the kernel, each with its unique composition, emerging as a potential vegetable oil source with high competitiveness with well-established conventional oil sources. Besides the oil, macauba fruits are rich in essential nutrients, including proteins, minerals, vitamins, dietary fiber, and phytochemicals, with outstanding health benefits.

Systematic Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease increasingly prevalent in the aging population. AD is characterized by pathological features such as -amyloid (A) plaque accumulation, tau neurofibrillary tangles formation, oxidative stress, an impaired cholinergic system, and neuroinflammation. Many therapeutic drugs have been developed to slow the progression of AD by targeting these pathological mechanisms.

This in vitro research assessed the influence of the instrument kinematics (rotary and reciprocating) and the apical preparation limit on the root canal disinfection and apical bacterial extrusion. After 21 days of Enterococcus faecalis biofilm formation in 72 mesial root canals of mandibular molars, the root canals were distributed into 2 groups (n = 36) according to the systems used for preparation: ProDesign S and Reciproc. The groups were redistributed according to the limit of apical preparation (n = 11): (a) 1 mm up to the apical foramen (TL-1); (b) at the apical foramen (TL = 0); (c) 1 mm beyond the apical foramen (TL + 1).

High intraocular pressure (HIOP) and high glucose levels are associated with oxidative stress. Although physical exercise protects against oxidative damage, its specific impact on eye health remains unclear. Thus, this study aimed to assess the impact of physical exercise on the oxidative status of whole eyes in male Swiss mice subjected to HIOP model and cafeteria diet (CD).

The frequency and intensity of wildfires have been increasing in many parts of the world, which may result in biodiversity loss. Wildfires can devastate plant communities, generating toxic ash that pollutes watercourses through runoff. However, our understanding of the effects of ash exposure on aquatic biodiversity is still limited.

This study investigates the effect of chloride levels on the mode of action of palladium complexes for the activation of propargyl- and allene-protected fluorophores and chemotherapeutic drugs through uncaging reactions. Four Pd(II) complexes were synthesized and characterized using various spectroscopic techniques to confirm their structure and electronic properties. Kinetic studies and density functional theory calculations revealed that chloride ions in phosphate buffered saline (PBS) significantly enhance catalytic efficiency, particularly for allenyl-protected substrates compared to propargylic counterparts.

Some native Chilean berries, including murtilla, have gained attention for their high phenolic content which renders them attractive for the beverage industry. However, phenolic-rich by-products are generated during the production of murtilla juice (murtilla pomace), and there has been no scientific consideration of this by-product as a source of different forms of phenolic compounds. The aim of this study was thus to obtain phenolic extracts from the soluble fraction (free, esterified, and etherified) of murtilla pomace as well from the counterpart that contains insoluble-bound compounds, and evaluate their antioxidant properties.

We propose a novel solution to streamline the migration of existing Transport Layer Security (TLS) protocol implementations to a post-quantum Key Encapsulation Mechanism for Transport Layer Security (KEMTLS). By leveraging Identity-Based Encryption (IBE), our solution minimizes the necessary modifications to the surrounding infrastructure, enabling the reuse of existing keys and certificates. We provide a proof-of-concept implementation and performance analysis, demonstrating the practical feasibility and effectiveness of our proposed approach.

This manuscript evaluated the performance of silanes in cementitious matrices in the partial replacement of superplasticizers by silanes. For this, pastes with a water/cement ratio of 0.186 were produced and the superplasticizer admixture based on polycarboxylate esters was partially substituted by three types of silanes-vinyltriethoxysilane silanes (VTES), n-(2-aminoethyl)-3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (AEAPTMS), and methacryloxypropyltrimethox-ysilane (MCPTMS)-in two substitutions levels (20% and 40%), and then tested in Portland cement pastes.

The jaboticaba is a fruit with a highly promising chemical profile for producing fermented products with biological activity. In this context, evaluating pre-fermentative maceration techniques in jaboticaba fermentations is essential to optimize the extraction of phenolic compounds and other metabolites of interest, imparting antioxidant characteristics to the product and offering potential health benefits. This study evaluated the impact of two pre-fermentative maceration techniques on the phenolic composition, bioaccessibility, and biological activities (α-amylase, α-glucosidase, and ACE inhibition) of alcoholic and acetic fermented products from jaboticaba.

Piezoresistive pressure sensors have been prepared by the electrospinning of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) containing graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) functionalized using 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoromethanesulfonate (BMIM(OTf)) ionic liquid (IL). Optical microscopy demonstrated that the functionalized GNP powder presented particles with a smaller lateral size. The obtained mats were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, electrical resistivity using two and four probes, and electromechanical testing with up to 32 load-unload cycles.
