Introduction: In diabetics, glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists (RA) may protect against microvascular alterations and oxidative stress, both of which have been implicated in glaucoma. Multiple studies suggest a possible relation between GLP-1 RA use and the development of glaucoma. This study performs a systematic review of the literature regarding the incidence of glaucoma development in type 2 diabetes patients treated with GLP-1 receptor agonists compared to a control group.

Introduction: Neoadjuvant cisplatin-based chemotherapy followed by radical surgery is the standard treatment for muscle-invasive urothelial carcinoma (MIUC). The Checkmate-274 and AMBASSADOR trials have demonstrated improvements in disease-free survival (DFS) with adjuvant immunotherapy. Consequently, this meta-analysis aimed to assess the effectiveness of strategies involving checkpoint inhibitors in managing high-risk MIUC.

This study proposes a method for assessing the transverse toughness of human long-bone cortical tissue. The method is based on a three-point bending test of pre-notched femur diaphysis segments, post-processed using the compliance method coupled with numerical simulations. Given the cracking nature of bone and if cracking processes remain confined to the crack tip, it is assumed that the compliance method can be used.

Objective: In recent years, the application of robotic assistance in diagnostic and therapeutic endovascular neurointerventional procedures has gained notable attention. In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we aim to evaluate the feasibility, safety, and current indications of robotic-assisted neurointerventions and to assess the degree of robotic assistance and reasons for unplanned manual conversion from robotic assistance.

Methods: We searched Medline, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases following PRISMA guidelines and included studies with ≥ 4 patients reporting on robotic-assisted neurointerventions.

Escuela de Ciencias de la Actividad Física, El Deporte y la Salud, Facultad de Ciencias Médicas, Universidad de Santiago de Chile, Santiago 8370003, Chile.

Assessing the reliability of measurement instruments and equipment is essential to ensure the accurate tracking of athletes over extended periods, minimizing the measurement errors caused by chance or other factors. However, a less common but equally important analysis is the verification of inter-measurement agreement, which complements the reliability results. To evaluate the intra- and inter-test reliability of an isometric hip adduction strength and asymmetries test in professional soccer players.

Background: Arteriovenous Malformations (AVMs) pose a risk of neurologic deterioration, particularly when located in eloquent areas. While awake surgery is well-established for treating low-grade gliomas near eloquent areas, its efficacy for AVMs is less conclusively reported.

Methods: This study conducted a systematic review and individual patient data (IPD) meta-analysis following Cochrane Collaboration and PRISMA guidelines.

Postmortem identification through fingerprints often encounters significant challenges, particularly with damaged epidermal tissue, due to factors such as carbonization, putrefaction, mummification, or saponification. Traditional techniques frequently fall short in cases involving fragile skin, which complicates the collection of clear fingerprint impressions. This study presents and evaluates an adaptive modification of the transillumination technique, integrating it with moistened black volcano powder to enhance fingerprint recovery from compromised postmortem tissue.

Evaluating carbon removal: Integrating technical potential with environmental, social, governance criteria, and sequestration permanence.

iScience

December 2024

KU Leuven, ECOOM, Department of Managerial Economics, Strategy and Innovation, Faculty of Economics and Business, Naamsestraat 69, BE-3000 Leuven, Belgium.

Climate modeling suggests that achieving international climate goals requires a reduction in current CO emissions by over 90%, with any remaining emissions to be addressed through carbon dioxide removal (CDR) solutions. Sixteen CDR strategies are evaluated by integrating technical potential, environmental, social, and governance (ESG) criteria, along with sequestration permanence. This evaluation, conducted by ENGIE's scientific council using an interdisciplinary Delphi panel methodology, proposes a "quality" measure for each technology.

Background/objectives: Pregnant and postpartum women have a higher risk for developing severe Covid-19 and other clinical and obstetric complications. This study aims to evaluate the frequency of metabolic acidosis with elevated anion gap and describe a case series of euglycemic ketoacidosis (EKA) in pregnant and postpartum women with severe confirmed or suspected Covid-19.

Materials And Methods: Observational retrospective study carried in a reference intensive care unit from May 2020 to June 2022.

Background: The congenital absence of the left atrial appendage (LAA) is an extremely rare anatomical anomaly, with only 23 cases documented in medical literature. The LAA plays a critical role in thrombus formation, particularly in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF), thus impacting stroke prevention strategies and the management of anticoagulation.

Case Summary: We report a 48-year-old male with a 2-year history of hypertension and prior episodes of tachycardic palpitations, who presented with AF and chest pain.

December 2024

Department of Medicine, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore, Singapore; Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Department of Medicine, National University Health System, Singapore.

Background And Aims: Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is a known risk factor for hepatobiliary malignancies. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of published studies to determine the incidence and risk factors for hepatobiliary malignancies in people with PSC.

Methods: Pubmed and Embase databases were searched from inception to April 10, 2024 for cohort studies reporting data on the incidence of cholangiocarcinoma (CCA), hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), or gallbladder cancer (GBC) in PSC.

Microorganisms have co-evolved with a variety of plants and animals, developing complex symbiotic relationships with their hosts and the environment. The diversity of symbionts acquired over time help their hosts to adapt, survive, and evolve more rapidly and efficiently, improving fitness across the lifespan. Understanding these synergistic relationships between humans and their endogenous microbiota may provide valuable information on human physiology and on potential mechanisms associated with the onset of diseases.

Platelet-Neutrophil aggregate formation induces NLRP3 inflammasome activation in VITT.

J Thromb Haemost

December 2024

Laboratory of Immunopharmacology, Oswaldo Cruz Institute, Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (FIOCRUZ), Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Electronic address:

Background: Although rare, vaccine-induced thrombotic thrombocytopenia (VITT) following adenoviral vector COVID-19 vaccination is a concerning and often severe adverse effect of vaccination. The generation of high anti-platelet factor 4 (PF4) antibody titers, promotes the formation of immune complexes capable of activating platelets and neutrophils through FcγRIIa.

Objective: Given that Platelet-leukocyte aggregate (PLA) formation and inflammasome activation are common features of thromboinflammatory diseases, we aimed to evaluate if these are also features of VITT.
