Lung cancer is a common malignancy in men and the second leading cause of cancer-related mortality in men in the western world. Phenolic cocoa ingredients have a strong antioxidative activity and the potential to have a protective effect against cancer. In the present study, we have evaluated the influence of cocoa beans subjected to different processing conditions on cell viability and apoptosis of human lung cancer cells (A549).

Graduate Program in Community Health, Ribeirão Preto Medical School (FMRP), University of São Paulo (USP), Ribeirão Preto, SP, Brazil; Department of Social Medicine, FMRP, USP, Ribeirão Preto, SP, Brazil. Electronic address:

Objective: To investigate the relationship between gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and the usual intake of fatty acids and indices of dietary fat quality [the atherogenicity (AI) and thrombogenicity indices (TI), and the ratios of hypo-and hypercholesterolemic (hH), ∑n-3/∑n-6, and polyunsaturated/saturated fatty acids (P:S)], during mid-pregnancy.

Methods: 799 adult pregnant women living in Ribeirão Preto, SP, Brazil were screened and accepted for this cross-sectional GDM study. The Multiple Source Method was used to estimate participants' usual diet, using two 24-hour dietary recalls during mid-pregnancy.

September 2015

Federal University of Rio de Janeiro State (UNIRIO) - Postgraduation Program, Brazil; University Hospital Clementino Fraga Filho, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), Epilepsy Center, Brazil. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is common in adults and its connection with neuroinflammation, particularly in cases like TLE with mesial hippocampal sclerosis (TLE-HS), is being explored for genetic susceptibility.
  • The study involved analyzing blood samples from 42 individuals with drug-resistant TLE-HS and 89 healthy controls to investigate the association of TLE-HS with specific HLA class II alleles using advanced genetic testing methods.
  • While the HLA-DRB1*13:02 allele showed a statistically significant difference in frequency between the patient and control groups, this significance diminished after adjusting for multiple comparisons, indicating it may have a weak association with TLE-HS susceptibility.

Introduction: Chronic Lymphocytic Inflammation with Pontine Perivascular Enhancement Responsive to Steroids (CLIPPERS Syndrome) was first described in 2010. Since then, about 50 cases have been reported around the world, but none in Portuguese-speaking countries. We report a case of patient of the Neurological Rehabilitation ward of Sarah Hospital/Brasilia, with clinical and radiologic features compatible with CLIPPERS Syndrome.

Strokes are preceded by oxidative stress and inflammation, two processes linked to atherosclerosis and hypertension. Statins have been widely employed to control atherosclerosis; however, there could be neurological implications to its use—including cognitive impairment. Thus,we aimed to determine whether alpha-tocopherol is capable of reversing the neurological side effects of statins and enhancing its anti-inflammatory properties.

Colorectal cancer is a major cause of morbidity and mortality throughout the world. Issues related to the role of diet in cancer prevention and treatment are featured each year, and, in this context, consumption of hydroxycinanmic acids is associated with reduced risk of chronic diseases including cancer. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the cellular uptake of caffeic and 5-caffeoylquinic acids and their effects on cell viability, cell cycle, and apoptosis in human colon adenocarcinoma cells (HT-29).

Recently, we defined a minimal overlapping region for causal Xp11.22 copy number gains in males with intellectual disability (ID), and identified HECT, UBA and WWE domain-containing protein-1 (HUWE1) as the primary dosage-sensitive gene, whose overexpression leads to ID. In the present study, we used this minimal interval to search for HUWE1 copy number variations by quantitative polymerase chain reaction in a large cohort of Brazilian males with idiopathic ID.

Tuberculosis (TB) is still a major health concern and side-effects related to the treatment, especially drug-induced hepatotoxicity (DIH), should be better investigated. In the present study, a possible association between anti-TB DIH and cigarette smoking, N-acetyltransferase 2 (NAT2), Cytochrome P450 2E1 (CYP2E1) and Cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) genotypes was studied in 131 TB Brazilian patients. The NAT2 and CYP3A4 genetic polymorphisms were determined using a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) direct sequencing approach and genetic polymorphisms of CYP2E1 gene were determined by restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP).

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal neurodegenerative disease with familial inheritance (fALS) in 5% to 10% of cases; 25% of those are caused by mutations in the superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) protein. More than 100 mutations in the SOD1 gene have been associated with fALS, altering the geometry of the active site, protein folding and the interaction between monomers. We performed a functional analysis of non-synonymous single nucleotide polymorphisms (nsSNPs) in 124 fALS SOD1 mutants.

Objective: The reproducibility of high-volume published series of laparoscopic radical prostatectomy (LRP) is still debatable. Many questions about its implementation, safety, and number of procedures required to achieve competence and improvement of outcomes with the technique remain unclear, and a learning curve study is crucial to investigate the acceptable performance of this advanced, minimally invasive procedure.

Subjects And Methods: Between 2004 and 2011, 240 consecutive patients underwent an LRP performed by a single surgeon and were divided into the first, second, and third groups of 80 patients each.
