Fluctuating asymmetry and organosomatic indexes in fish: the Corocoro grunt as a case study (Haemulidae).

Fluctuation asymmetries (FA) are random on the bilateral symmetry plan of paired morphological characters, and other types of symmetry, such as: for instance, translational or rotational symmetry, in response to environmental, and genetic stress. The relationship of FA with gonadossomatic (GSI), hepatosomatic (HSI), and fullness (RI) indexes and condition factor (K) for juveniles (n=8), adults (n=32), males (n=9), and females (n=26) of Corocoro grunt Orthopristis ruber were evaluated in this paper. The composite fluctuating asymmetry (CFA) was used to calculate the combined effects of FA over these four organosomatic indexes of 66 Corocoro grunt caught during 2011 in Guanabara Bay, Brazil, one of the most eutrophic coastal bays in the world.

Diabetic ketoacidosis and COVID-19: what have we learned so far?

In December 2019, a pandemic emerged due to a new coronavirus that imposed various uncertainties and discoveries. It has been reported that diabetes is a risk factor for worst outcomes of COVID-19 and also that SARS-CoV-2 infection was correlated with the occurrence of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) in patients. The aim of this work is to discuss this correlation emphasizing the main case reports from 2020 while exploring the management of DKA during the course of COVID-19.

Choledochal cyst theories going pear-shaped? Evolution of choledochal cyst during intrauterine life in a case evaluated using magnetic resonance imaging and postnatal outcomes.

A choledochal cyst is a rare abdominal malformation and was first reported almost three centuries before. There are few theories describing the evolution of the cyst through the lifespan of affected patients until diagnosis and prompt treatment; however, there is no image documentation of the evolution of the malformation. In this report, we demonstrate the evolution of a type I choledochal cyst in a fetus from the 24th to the 37th week of gestation using magnetic resonance imaging and perinatal outcomes with correlation with pathophysiological mechanisms.

Green-based active packaging: Opportunities beyond COVID-19, food applications, and perspectives in circular economy-A brief review.

The development of biodegradable packaging, based on agro-industrial plant products and by-products, can transform waste into products with high added value and reduce the use of conventional nonrenewable packaging. Green-based active packaging has a variety of compounds such as antimicrobials, antioxidants, aromatics, among others. These compounds interact with packaged products to improve food quality and safety and favor the migration of bioactive compounds from the polymeric matrix to food.

The utility of pretreatment systemic inflammatory response biomarkers on overall survival of cervical cancer patients stratified by clinical staging.

Objective: Inflammation plays a crucial role in the initiation and progression of many cancers. This study aimed to investigate the utility of pretreatmentneutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), derived neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (dNLR), and a combination of PLR and NLR in predicting the risk of death according to clinical staging in cervical cancer (CC) patients.

Introduction: Polysomnography is the recommended method for the diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA); however, it is expensive, uncomfortable, and inaccessible. Alternative diagnostic methods are necessary, and Nocturnal Oximetry (NO) has proven to be reliable. Nevertheless, there have been doubts about its accuracy in patients with a history of hypoxia.

To evaluate the response of treatment with direct antiviral agents (DAAs) on metabolic variables of patients with hepatitis C. Observational, cross-sectional study in a sample of patients with hepatitis C starting therapy with DAAs followed on the hepatology division of Federal University of Rio de Janeiro State.

Evaluation of Exposure to Toluene and Xylene in Gasoline Station Workers.

The main volatile organic compounds found at gasoline stations are benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene isomers (BTEX). They cause several harmful effects on human health. Regulatory Norm 7 (1978) provides that, in Brazil, biological monitoring of toluene and xylene is carried out by measuring the urinary metabolites hippuric acid (HA) and methylhippuric acid (MHA), respectively.

Epidemiology of tongue squamous cell carcinoma: A retrospective cohort study.

Objective: To analyze the epidemiological profile and the specific survival of patients diagnosed with tongue squamous cell carcinoma at the National Cancer Institute (INCA).

Materials And Methods: Hospital Cancer Registry System Data and Mortality Information from 2007 to 2009 were retrieved in a retrospective cohort study of patients diagnosed with tongue squamous cell carcinoma. Specific survival was estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method.

Dried blood spot sampling as an alternative for the improvement of hepatitis B and C diagnosis in key populations.

Background: To achieve the elimination of hepatitis B and C, there is an urgent need to develop alternative strategies to increase the access of diagnosis, particularly among key populations such as people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), individuals with coagulopathies and chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients.

Aim: To evaluate the use of dried blood spot (DBS) in the detection of hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) markers.

Methods: A total of 430 individuals comprised of people living with HIV, coagulopathies and CKD provided paired serum and DBS samples.

Cardiovascular and Autonomic Responses after a Single Bout of Resistance Exercise in Men with Untreated Stage 2 Hypertension.

The aim of this paper is to assess the integrated responses of ambulatory blood pressure (BP), cardiac autonomic modulation, spontaneous baroreflex sensitivity (BRS), and vascular reactivity after a single bout of resistance exercise (RE) in men with stage 2 hypertension who have never been treated before. Ten hypertensive men were subjected to a RE session of three sets of 20 repetitions and an intensity of 40% of the 1-repetition maximum (RM) test in seven different exercises. For the control (CTR) session, the volunteers were positioned on the exercise machines but did not perform any exercise.

Surgical Management of Symptomatic Lumbar, Sacral, and Lumbosacral Plexus Tumors: a Peripheral Nerve Unit Experience.

Effects of lycopene from guava ( L.) derived products on breast cancer cells.

Polyphenols, condensed tannins, total flavonoids, total carotenoids, lycopene and ascorbic acid were determined besides verifying antioxidant capacity of peel, pulp and desserts (with and without sugar) of red guava ( L.) as well as the effects of lycopene on cytotoxicity, cell cycle and apoptosis on breast cancer cell line MCF-7. Guava peel contains 90% of the total ascorbic acid and heat treatment does not modify bioactive compounds content and antioxidant capacity.

Comparison of the performance of four staging systems in determining the prognosis of breast cancer among women undergoing neoadjuvant chemotherapy.

Purpose: Different tumor-related factors have been proposed to assess the risk of disease progression and death in women undergoing neoadjuvant breast cancer chemotherapy. Recently, besides the classical pre-treatment clinical stage (CS) and post-treatment pathologic stage (PS), estrogen receptor status and histologic grade (CPS + EG score) and HER2 results (Neo-Bioscore) have also been added to this suite of staging systems, generating new scores. The present study aims to compare the performance of these four staging systems, namely CS, PS, CPS + EG and Neo-Bioscore, in the prognosis of breast cancer in women undergoing neoadjuvant chemotherapy.

Anatomical feasibility of peripheral nerve transfer to reestablish external anal sphincter control - cadaveric study.

Purpose: Motor deficits affecting anal sphincter control can severely impair quality of life. Peripheral nerve transfer has been proposed as an option to reestablish anal sphincter motor function. We assessed, in human cadavers, the anatomical feasibility of nerve transfer from a motor branch of the tibialis portion of the sciatic nerve to two distinct points on pudendal nerve (PN), through transgluteal access, as a potential approach to reestablish anal sphincter function.

Ecological impacts of an invasive top predator fish across South America.

Peacock bass Cichla ocellaris is a piscivorous cichlid native from the Amazon and Orinoco river basins, which has been broadly introduced into tropical areas worldwide, leading to several adverse local effects. However, predictors of its invasibility and assessments of its ecological impacts over large spatial scales are still lacking. Impact of sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors-induced glucosuria in the incidence of urogenital infection on postmenopausal women with diabetes.

Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in postmenopausal women is associated with a high incidence of urogenital infections, which negatively impact the quality of life and increase morbidity, mortality, and health-care costs. Glucosuria is a known risk factor for these infections; therefore, it is of interest to determine if increased glucosuria secondary to sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2in) impacts the incidence and severity of urogenital infections in postmenopausal women with T2DM.

Methods: The study was conducted at Gaffrée Guinle University Hospital on two groups of postmenopausal women with T2DM: with and without SGLT2in therapy (n = 80 in each group).

Analysis of Benzene Exposure in Gas Station Workers Using Trans,Trans-Muconic Acid.

In Brazil, gas station workers are occupationally exposed to the benzene present in gasoline. Brazilian law indicates the use of trans,trans-muconic acid(t,t-MA) as a biomarker of benzene exposure. The aim of this study was to evaluate the level of exposure to benzene in gas station workers, through the quantification of t,t-MA present in urine.
