TBS correlates with bone density and microstructure at trabecular and cortical bone evaluated by HR-pQCT.

J Bone Miner Metab

May 2024

Division of Endocrinology of Clementino Fraga Filho University Hospital, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (HUCFF-UFRJ), Avenida Professor Rodolpho Paulo Rocco 255, 21941-913, Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brasil.

Introduction: Trabecular bone score (TBS) estimates bone microstructure, which is directly measured by high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HRpQCT). We evaluated the correlation between these methods and TBS influence on fracture risk assessed by FRAX.

Materials And Methods: We evaluated 129 individuals (82 women, 43 postmenopausal) 20 to 82.

Female Athlete Triad, initially described as the association of disordered eating, amenorrhea and osteoporosis, was further redefined to focus on low energy availability (EA), which has a central role in development of hypoestrogenism and low bone mineral density (BMD). However, the contribution of each variable, that is, low EA and hypoestrogenism, for bone derangements is still an open question. To evaluate body composition and bone status in long-distance triathletes without hypoestrogenism, as compared to non-athletes, using DXA and HR-pQCT, and the influence of EA.

To obtain the opinion of patients with rheumatoid arthritis or lupus erythematosus about the use of antimalarials through questionnaires and to evaluate their adherence to medication. A cross-sectional study of patients treated with antimalarial medication for a period equal to or longer than 1 year attended between November 2012 and October 2014. A structured questionnaire with 12 questions was filled out.

The presence of mammary nodules during childhood and adolescence is somewhat unusual, generally consisting of benign lesions. Despite the range of possible diagnoses, they are generally similar in clinical terms. In the rare cases where these lesions constitute a case of gigantomastia, the differential diagnosis must be between juvenile fibroadenomatosis, phyllodes tumours and other even less common diseases of the mammary gland, such as Pseudoangiomatous Stromal Hyperplasia (PASH).

Background: An increase in the incidence of second primary cancers is the late effect of greatest concern that could occur in differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC) patients treated with radioactive iodine (RAI). The decision to treat a patient with RAI should therefore incorporate a careful risk-benefit analysis. The objective of this work was to adapt the risk-estimation models developed by the Biological Effects of Ionizing Radiation Committee to local epidemiological characteristics in order to assess the carcinogenesis risk from radiation in a population of Brazilian DTC patients treated with RAI.

Objective: Osteoporosis is a serious and underestimated complication of endogenous hypercortisolism that results in an increased risk of fractures, even in patients with normal or slightly decreased bone mineral density (BMD). Alterations in bone microarchitecture, a very important component of bone quality, may explain bone fragility. The aim of this study was to investigate bone density and microarchitecture in a cohort of patients with endogenous Cushing's syndrome (CS).

Continuous C-peptide loss in patients with type 1 diabetes and multiethnic background.

Diabetes Res Clin Pract

March 2013

Nutrology Department, Clementino Fraga Filho University Hospital, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (HUCFF), Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil.

C peptide (CP) was evaluated in 88 individuals with type 1 diabetes, variable disease duration and multiethnic background. Initially, 28 patients had detectable CP, which persisted in 46.2% after 17.

The K-Ras protein is found mutated in 42.4% of lung adenocarcinoma cases, evidencing its importance as a chemotherapeutic target. The Ras protein becomes functional after farnesylation, a post-transduction modification, allowing its attachment to the cellular membrane permitting signal transduction.
