Article Synopsis
  • Cryptococcosis, caused by specific fungal species, leads to 181,000 deaths annually due to late diagnosis and limited treatment, highlighting the need for new antifungal agents like essential oils.
  • The study investigated how lavender essential oil (LEO) affects two strains of fungi, utilizing molecular evaluation through morphological and proteomics approaches.
  • Results showed that LEO induces a stressful environment; one strain exhibited changes in energy metabolism, while the other showed alterations in cellular architecture, indicating differences in their responses to the treatment.

Article Synopsis
  • * Studies indicate that cancer stem cells (CSCs) in OSCC exhibit resistance to CDDP, leading researchers to explore new therapeutic approaches targeting these cells.
  • * The research assessed the effects of the NFκB inhibitor emetine and the HDAC inhibitor SAHA on OSCC CSCs, showing that both inhibitors can disrupt these resistant cells by enhancing histone acetylation and inhibiting the NFκB pathway, with combined treatment yielding similar results to emetine alone.

Article Synopsis
  • Drug resistance in mucoepidermoid carcinomas (MEC) leads to issues like tumor recurrence and metastasis, primarily driven by cancer stem cells (CSCs).
  • Previous research indicated that tumors use NFkB signaling for chemotherapy resistance, and targeting the epigenome can help manage CSC populations.
  • The study found that using low doses of NFkB inhibitor emetine and HDAC inhibitor SAHA is effective against MEC CSCs; also, combining emetine with Cisplatin (CDDP) is a promising strategy for treating the non-CSC tumor cells in MEC.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) patients face a highly infiltrative and metastatic disease characterized by poor survival rates and suboptimal response to available therapies. We have previously shown that sensitization of ACC tumors to chemotherapy using histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDACi) constitutes a promising therapeutic strategy to manage tumor growth. Here, we used patient-derived xenografts (PDX) from ACC tumors to evaluate the effects of in vivo administration of the HDAC inhibitor Entinostat combined with Cisplatin over tumor growth.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the role of maternal microRNAs, specifically miR-let-7d-3p and miR-451a, during the second trimester of pregnancy and their impact on infant neuropsychomotor development at 90 days old.
  • It uses a case-control design comparing pregnant women with Major Depressive Episode (MDE) and those without MDE, assessing child development through established scales and analyzing microRNA levels from maternal serum.
  • The findings reveal a negative correlation between miR-451a and cognitive development, while miR-let-7d-3p showed positive associations with both cognitive and motor development in infants, highlighting the importance of these microRNAs during pregnancy.

The Mental Impact and Distress Scale: COVID-19 (MIDc) was constructed and validated by one of the first pandemic-impact research teams in February 2020 and aims to assess psychosocial impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. The purpose of the present research was to determine the psychometric properties of the MIDc's Brazilian form and outline a sociodemographic profile of the pandemic's psychosocial impact in a Brazilian sample. Altogether, 1004 Brazilians living in different regions of Brazil completed an online survey.

Background: Brazil has faced two simultaneous problems related to respiratory health: forest fires and the high mortality rate due to COVID-19 pandemics. The Amazon rain forest is one of the Brazilian biomes that suffers the most with fires caused by droughts and illegal deforestation. These fires can bring respiratory diseases associated with air pollution, and the State of Pará in Brazil is the most affected.

  • Determining herbage intake is essential for understanding grazing ecology, and this study compares the Continuous Bite Monitoring (CBM) method to the traditional double-weighing technique for measuring herbage intake in grazing sheep.
  • The study involved various experiments that assessed factors affecting the reliability of CBM, such as observer count, forage species, and sward height, finding significant variations impacting intake estimations.
  • Results showed a strong correlation between the two methods, but CBM tended to overestimate intake in certain experiments, highlighting its potential for detailed insights into foraging behavior while remaining non-invasive to animal activity.

Article Synopsis
  • The study compares stroke health policies in France and Brazil, noting that both countries aim for universal access but have different healthcare structures.
  • France, a high-income nation, incorporates copayments and has higher rates of stroke hospitalizations compared to Brazil, which offers completely free healthcare.
  • Results indicate disparities in stroke-related hospitalization rates, mortality, and length of stay, suggesting that while policies are similar, the outcomes and healthcare dynamics vary significantly between the two countries.

Heart transplantation is the standard of therapy for patients with end-stage heart disease. Since the first human-to-human heart transplantation, performed in 1967, advances in organ donation, surgical techniques, organ preservation, perioperative care, immunologic risk assessment, immunosuppression agents, monitoring of graft function and surveillance of long-term complications have drastically increased recipient survival. However, there are yet many challenges in the modern era of heart transplantation in which immunosuppression may play a key role in further advances in the field.

Objective: Self-administered non-invasive therapies with high-fluoride dentifrices are an attractive alternative to traditional restorative management of root carious lesions (RCLs), but the available evidence is still scarce, particularly in community-dwelling elders. The aim of this randomized controlled trial (RCT) was to compare the effectiveness of toothbrushing with 5,000 ppm versus 1,450 ppm fluoridated dentifrice (F- dentifrice) on preventing and arresting RCLs, in community-dwelling elders.

Methods: A two years double-blinded RCT was carried out with 345 independently-living older adults, with at least one tooth with RCL.
