Article Synopsis
  • The study identified a significant prevalence of excessive daytime sleepiness (54.4%) and severe daytime sleepiness (10.0%) among healthcare university students in Brazil.
  • Factors linked to higher rates of excessive sleepiness included being female, younger, studying medicine, having poor sleep quality, and losing sleep due to internet use.
  • Medical students and women showed the highest risks for both excessive and severe daytime sleepiness, highlighting a need for targeted interventions in this population.

Lipid-core nanocapsules (LNCs) loaded with simvastatin (SV, SV-LNC) or lovastatin (LV, LV-LNC) were formulated for pulmonary administration. The LNC suspensions were characterized physicochemically, their stability was evaluated, and drug delivery by the pulmonary route was tested . The loaded LNCs had a particle size close to 200 nm, a low polydispersity index, and a zeta potential around -20 mV.

Equimolar amounts of lactobionic acid and sorbitol may be obtained in a reaction catalyzed by the enzymes glucose-fructose oxidoreductase and glucono-δ-lactonase, which are found in the periplasm of Zymomonas mobilis. These reactions are generally conducted using immobilized bacterial cells, and the cell treatment and immobilization steps are costly and time-consuming. This study evaluated alternatives to simplify the preparation of calcium alginate-immobilized biocatalyst and its application in different operation modes and types of reactors.

Although the pathogenesis of metabolic syndrome (MetS) is complex and multifactorial, there is limited information if psychological factors, such as stress exposure, are involved in the etiology of MetS. Therefore, this study investigated the associations between MetS and cortisol levels and perceived stress levels among women shift workers in Southern Brazil. A matched case-control study was conducted, including 50 cases of MetS and 200 age-matched controls (±3 years, 4 for each case).

Aims: HIV infection is a chronic disease that requires intensive treatment in its later phases, including dietary supplementation. Several studies have suggested clinical improvements in patients with high levels of selenium, linking these levels with a longer progression to AIDS. The objective of this study was to verify the association of two polymorphisms in the SEP15 gene, which encodes a selenoprotein that is responsible for the transport of selenium in cells, with the time of progression to AIDS in HIV-1-infected patients.

Combined effects of ultrasound and immobilization protocol on butyl acetate synthesis catalyzed by CALB.

Molecules

July 2014

Biotechnology, Bioprocess and Biocatalysis Group, Institute of Food Science and Technology, Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul State, Av. Bento Gonçalves, 9500, P.O. Box 15090, Porto Alegre ZC 91501-970, RS, Brazil.

It is well established that the performance of lipase B from Candida antarctica (CALB) as catalyst for esterification reactions may be improved by the use of ultrasound technology or by its immobilization on styrene-divinylbenzene beads (MCI-CALB). The present research evaluated the synthesis of butyl acetate using MCI-CALB under ultrasonic energy, comparing the results against those obtained using the commercial preparation, Novozym 435. The optimal conditions were determined using response surface methodology (RSM) evaluating the following parameters: reaction temperature, substrate molar ratio, amount of biocatalyst, and added water.
