The present study evaluated the co-production of β-galactosidase and ethanol by ATCC 36907 and NRRL Y-8279 using as carbon source the lactose found on "coalho" cheese whey. Cheese whey was subjected to partial deproteinization, and physicochemical parameters were assessed. Cultivations were carried out in an shaker to evaluate two carbon/nitrogen (C:N) ratios.

This work focuses on acoustic analysis as a way of discriminating mineral oil, providing a robust technique, immune to electromagnetic noise, and in some cases, depending on the applied sensor, a low-cost technique. Thus, we propose a new method for the diagnosis of the quality of mineral oil used in electrical transformers, integrating a ferroelectric-based hydrophone and an acoustic transducer. Our classification solution is based on a supervised machine learning technique applied to the signals generated by an in-home built hydrophone.

Agricultural Sciences Academic Unit, Forest Sciences Graduate Program - PPGCFL, Forest, Bioenergy and Environment Research Group, Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte - UFRN, Natal, Brazil.

Liposoluble liquid smoke (LS) preparations are versatile food additives used worldwide. The objective of the present work was to characterise the chemical composition of four types of industrial liposoluble LS currently used as the basis for the production of commercial smoke flavourings. The LS was obtained by vacuum fractional distillation from a raw pyrolysis oil (raw LS) obtained primarily from eucalyptus wood tar.

Objectives: To evaluate periodontal parameters of abutment teeth and interproximal sites, in patients with mandibular class I Kennedy Removable Partial Dentures (RPD), after 4 years of periodontal treatment.

Methods: Fourteen patients with periodontal disease were treated and evaluated for the following parameters: plaque index (PI), bleeding on probing (BOP), probing depth (PD), gingival recession (GR), clinical attachment loss (CAL) and keratinized mucosa (KM). Parameters were compared between abutment teeth with direct and indirect retainers at all time-points.

Statement Of Problem: Removable partial dentures (RPDs) are traditionally made by casting, a complex, error-prone, and time-consuming process. Computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) RPD systems may simplify the clinical steps and minimize errors; however, the accuracy of CAD-CAM RPD systems is unclear.

Purpose: The purpose of this systematic review was to determine whether CAD-CAM systems are accurate for the manufacturing of RPD frameworks.

Background: Reach-grasp movements are motor components commonly affected after stroke and directly related to the independence of these individuals. Evaluations of these activities can be performed using clinical instruments and assessed by detailed and costly kinematic analyses. The aim of this study was to develop an analysis of reach-grasp movements in post-stroke patients using a simple, inexpensive, and manageable instrument.

This work reports on the preparation of a drying process from the ethanolic extract of Muirapuama and its characterization through green analytical techniques. The spray-drying processes were performed by using ethanolic extract in a ratio of 1:1 extract/excipient and 3 factorial design. The properties of dried powder were investigated in terms of total flavonoid content, moisture content, powder yield, and particle size distribution.

Optogenetics is revolutionizing Neuroscience, but an often neglected effect of light stimulation of the brain is the generation of heat. In extreme cases, light-generated heat kills neurons, but mild temperature changes alter neuronal function. To date, most experiments rely on light stimulation of neural tissue using fiber-coupled lasers of various wavelengths.

Detailed knowledge of the arterial system is an important prerequisite when interpreting experimental data in research, as well as in the diagnosis of cardiovascular disease using imaging techniques such as Doppler echocardiography and contrast radiography. Thus, considering the importance of the aortic arrangement, the objective of this study was to describe the collateral arteries of the aortic arch of agoutis in order to establish the standard model, and therefore contribute to studies involving research related to heart disease, and produce information for a more accurate diagnosis in complementary imaging examinations. In this study, 14 adult animals were used, comprising eight males and six females.

Graduate Program in Health Sciences, Dispersed System Laboratory (LaSid), Pharmacy Department, Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), Av. General Gustavo de Cordeiro-SN-Petrópolis, Natal 59012-570, Brazil.

Asthma, a disease classified as a chronic inflammatory disorder induced by airway inflammation, is triggered by a genetic predisposition or antigen sensitization. Drugs currently used as therapies present disadvantages such as high cost and side effects, which compromise the treatment compliance. Alternatively, traditional medicine has reported the use of natural products as alternative or complementary treatment.

Background: Chagas disease, also known as American Trypanosomiasis, is caused by the protozoan . It is occurring in Americas, including USA and Canada, and Europe and its current treatment involves the use of two drugs as follows: benznidazole (BNZ) and nifurtimox, which present high toxicity and low efficacy during the chronic phase of the disease, thus promoting the search for more effective therapeutic alternatives. Amongst them xylan, a bioactive polysaccharide, extracted from corn cob.

Apoptosis signaling pathways, drug resistance, and metastasis are important targets to develop new cancer treatments. We developed cholesterol-coated Poly(d,l-Lactide--Glycolic Acid) (PLGA) nanoparticles for effective encapsulation and delivery of retinoic acid and oxaliplatin to analyze their antitumor activity in colorectal cancer. The cell viability and proliferation of tumoral cells lines (CT-26 and SW-480) decreased when compared to control in vitro after treatment with the nanoparticles.
