Self-Assembled Cationic-Covered Nanoemulsion as A Novel Biocompatible Immunoadjuvant for Antiserum Production Against Scorpion Venom.

This study assesses the efficacy of different nanoemulsion formulations as new and innovative adjuvants for improving the in vivo immunization against the scorpion venom. Nanoemulsions were designed testing key-variables such as surfactants, co-solvents, and the influence of the temperature, which would be able to induce the phase transition from a liquid crystal to a stable nanoemulsion, assessed for four months. Additionally, cationic-covered nanoemulsion with hyper-branched poly(ethyleneimine) was prepared and its performance was compared to the non-cationic ones.

Nutritional Risk Screening Tools for Older Adults with COVID-19: A Systematic Review.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is associated with high risk of malnutrition, primarily in older people; assessing nutritional risk using appropriate screening tools is critical. This systematic review identified applicable tools and assessed their measurement properties. Literature was searched in the MEDLINE, Embase, and LILACS databases.

Central odontogenic fibroma: an international multicentric study of 62 cases.

Objective: The aim of this study was to report the clinicopathologic features of 62 cases of central odontogenic fibroma (COdF).

Study Design: Clinical and radiographic data were collected from the records of 13 oral pathology laboratories. All cases were microscopically reviewed, considering the current World Health Organization classification of tumors and were classified according to histopathologic features.

Analysis of the Effects of Cryofrequency on Localized Fat.

Cryofrequency combines cryotherapy with radiofrequency, reaching the tissue in different layers, providing various biological effects, and reducing localized adiposity. We sought to evaluate the efficacy of cryofrequency in reducing localized adiposity. The study population consisted of 63 women with infra-abdominal adiposity, evaluated before and after treatment using evaluation protocols, questionnaires, and ultrasound imaging.

Lower speech connectedness linked to incidence of psychosis in people at clinical high risk.

Background: Formal thought disorder is a cardinal feature of psychotic disorders, and is also evident in subtle forms before psychosis onset in individuals at clinical high-risk for psychosis (CHR-P). Assessing speech output or assessing expressive language with speech as the medium at this stage may be particularly useful in predicting later transition to psychosis.

Method: Speech samples were acquired through administration of the Thought and Language Index (TLI) in 24 CHR-P participants, 16 people with first-episode psychosis (FEP) and 13 healthy controls.

This compound has been explored as a potential antimicrobial agent, but it is insoluble in water. The present study evaluated the surfactin production by UFPEDA 438 using sugarcane molasses as a substrate. The effects of the cultivation conditions (temperature, agitation and aeration ratio) on the biosurfactant production and kinetic parameters were investigated. Characteristics of the biosurfactant were obtained after analyses of the emulsification index (EI) and critical micellar concentration (CMC) of the fermentation broth.

Responses of matrix metalloproteinases to hyperbaric oxygen treatment: changing for good or ill?

Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) is currently emerging as a promising therapeutic option for diseases involving impaired tissue repair and remodeling. In this regard, HBO has been shown to modulate signaling pathways responsible for matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) regulation, which makes the MMPs interesting targets for investigation. However, the understanding regarding how HBO treatment affects the expression and activity of the MMP family members in different tissues and diseases needs to be clarified.

Transcranial direct current stimulation improves tinnitus perception and modulates cortical electrical activity in patients with tinnitus: A randomized clinical trial.

Objectives: This study aims to determine whether transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS): a) is effective in the treatment of tinnitus by decreasing its annoyance and severity; b) modulates the cortical electrical activity of such individuals.

Methods: A double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial was conducted with 24 patients with tinnitus, randomized into two groups: Group 1 (n = 12) received anodal tDCS over the left temporoparietal area (LTA) and cathodal tDCS over the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and Group 2 (n = 12) received placebo intervention. Tinnitus perception using a visual analog scale (VAS) and the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI) questionnaire, in addition to electroencephalogram (EEG) was measured with eyes opened and closed at baseline and after the intervention.

Improved Removal Capacity and Equilibrium Time of Maghemite Nanoparticles Growth in Zeolite Type 5A for Pb(II) Adsorption.

Novel magnetic zeolite type 5A nanocomposites were synthesized by the co-precipitation method and applied to lead removal from aqueous ambient. Maghemite nanoparticles were mixed with zeolite and, by controlling its content, transmission electron microscopy results gave sizes of 5 to 15 nm and selected area electron diffraction patterns confirmed the presence of zeolite. The nanocomposites have high specific surface area with values up to 194 m/g.

Chloroquine as a promising adjuvant therapy for type 1 Diabetes Mellitus.

Chloroquine (CQ) and hydroxychloroquine, are promising anti-inflammatory drugs for the treatment of Diabetes mellitus (DM) to prevent associated complications. Therefore, this study evaluated the anti-inflammatory effects of CQ-free and CQ-incorporated polylactic acid nanoparticles (NPs) in the peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of patients with type 1 Diabetes mellitus (T1DM). In total, 25 normoglycemic individuals and 25 patients with T1DM aged 10-16 years were selected and glycemic controls evaluated.

Cross-Frequency Phase-Amplitude Coupling between Hippocampal Theta and Gamma Oscillations during Recall Destabilizes Memory and Renders It Susceptible to Reconsolidation Disruption.

Avoidance memory reactivation at recall triggers theta-gamma hippocampal phase amplitude coupling (hPAC) only when it elicits hippocampus-dependent reconsolidation. However, it is not known whether there is a causal relationship between these phenomena. We found that in adult male Wistar rats, silencing the medial septum during recall did not affect avoidance memory expression or maintenance but abolished hPAC and the amnesia caused by the intrahippocampal administration of reconsolidation blockers, both of which were restored by concomitant theta burst stimulation of the fimbria-fornix pathway.

Physical activity assessments in children with congenital heart disease: A systematic review.

Renal involvement in systemic lupus erythematosus: additional histopathological lesions.

A common criticism of the classification of lupus nephritis is the relative scarcity of information regarding tubular, interstitial, and vascular changes compared to the available information regarding glomerular changes, even though their potential for independent progression is known. This study reviewed the importance of less explored lesions by the current and widely used 2003 classification of lupus nephritis of the International Society of Nephrology/Renal Pathology Society (ISN/RPS), with emphasis on the tubulointerstitial, podocyte, and vascular lesions, increasingly recognised as being important in the pathogenesis and prognosis of the disease. Recognition of these lesions can help with therapeutic decision-making, thereby allowing better results for patients with systemic lupus erythematosus.
