Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) presents significant challenges in critical care, primarily due to its inflammatory nature, which leads to impaired gas exchange and respiratory mechanics. While mechanical ventilation (MV) is essential for patient support, the transition from controlled to assisted ventilation is complex and may be associated with intensive care unit-acquired weakness, ventilator-induced diaphragmatic dysfunction and patient self-inflicted lung injury. This paper explores the multifaceted challenges encountered during this transition, with a focus on respiratory effort, sedation management, and monitoring techniques, and investigates innovative approaches to enhance patient outcomes.

Cardiac involvement in 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) survivors has been reported frequently. An exacerbated immune response may be the main mechanism of myocardial injury and late cardiac sequelae in this population. We investigated the immune profile in hypertensive and non-hypertensive patients with COVID-19 who developed late cardiac fibrosis and edema, as detected by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Objective: To evaluate the influence of pre-existing maternal diabetes mellitus on fetal myocardial performance index and systolic-to-diastolic duration ratio.
Methods: Prospective cohort study included 179 pregnant women between 20 and 36w6d, divided into 3 groups: Group 1 (120, normal), Group 2 (31, type 1 diabetes mellitus), and Group 3 (28, type 2 diabetes mellitus). Systolic-to-diastolic duration ratio was calculated as the sum of isovolumic contraction time and ejection time divided by the sum of isovolumic relaxation time and ventricular filling time.

This study investigated pumpkin seed protein (PSP) as a carrier for astaxanthin (AST). Interaction mechanisms revealed through fluorescence spectroscopy and molecular docking, showed that hydrogen bonds and Van der Waals forces form the PSP-AST complex. AST binding altered PSP's secondary structure, increasing α-helix (7.

γδ T cells play diverse roles in immune responses, producing either IL-17A or IFN-γ. Here we investigated the impact of this functional dichotomy on cutaneous leishmaniasis. We demonstrate that in Sv129 mice susceptible to Leishmania amazonensis, Vγ4+ γδ T cells are the main source of IL-17A.

Background & Aims: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is often overlooked in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). Our study aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the burden of MASLD in T1DM by assessing the prevalence of MASLD and its advanced forms in individuals with T1DM.
Methods: We systematically searched PubMed and Embase databases (from inception to May 5, 2024) for original articles on the prevalence or characteristics of MASLD (as detected by blood biomarkers/scores, imaging techniques, or liver biopsy) in adults with T1DM.

Background: Bipolar disorder (BD) presents with a wide range of symptoms that vary among relatives, casting doubt on categorical illness models. To address this uncertainty, we investigated the heritability and genetic relationships between categorical and dimensional models of BD in a family sample.
Methods: This retrospective study included participants (n = 397 Females, n = 329 Males, mean age 47 yr) in the Amish-Mennonite Bipolar Genetics (AMBiGen) study from North and South America that were assigned categorical mood disorder diagnoses ("narrow" or "broad") by structured psychiatric interview and completed the Mood Disorder Questionnaire (MDQ), which assesses lifetime history of manic symptoms and associated impairment.

This pipeline presents a refined approach for deriving personalized neurobiological insights from iPSC-derived neurospheres. By employing Tandem Mass Tag (TMT) labeling, we optimized sample pooling and multiplexing for robust comparative analysis across experimental conditions, maximizing data yield per sample. Through single-patient-derived neurospheres-composed of neural progenitor cells, early neurons, and radial glia-this study explores proteomic profiling to mirror the cellular complexity of neurodevelopment more accurately than traditional 2D cultures.

The disaccharide trehalose plays a crucial role in multiple facets of the stress biology of yeasts and fungi. Here, we evaluate the properties, cellular and ecophysiological roles, metabolism, and stress-protection mechanisms of trehalose. We integrate disparate sources of knowledge across these topics, and bring new information about the mechanisms by which trehalose stabilises biomacromolecules and how trehalose metabolism is regulated thus giving rise to its diverse roles in fungi including stress protector, carbohydrate reserve, and regulatory/signaling molecule.

The EDA-5 was translated from English to Portuguese, followed by a cross-cultural adaptation for use in Brazil and Portugal. Two independent translators worked on the Brazilian and European Portuguese versions, which were then reviewed to create a harmonized version. This version was back-translated into English and approved by the original author.

Cardiac arrest (CA) is associated with high incidence and mortality rates. Among patients who survive the acute phase, brain injury stands out as a primary cause of death or disability. Effective intensive care management, including targeted temperature management, seizure treatment and maintenance of normal physiological parameters, plays a crucial role in improving survival and neurological outcomes.

Heavy crude oil reserves are characterized by their high viscosity and density, largely due to significant quantities of asphaltenes. The removal of asphaltene precipitates from oil industry installations is crucial, as they can contaminate catalysts and obstruct pipelines. Therefore, this study aimed to bio-transform heavy oil asphaltenes into smaller molecules using the yeast Yarrowia lipolytica, known for its ability to efficiently degrade hydrophobic substrates.

The Cambeva variegata group, diagnosed by having a prominent skin crest similar to an adipose fin, an interrupted supraorbital laterosensory canal, with an additional supraorbital S4 pore, and a relatively small premaxilla with an accentuated constriction on its lateral portion, occurs in a broad area of south-eastern Brazil, mostly within the savannah-like Cerrado vegetation at the northern-most part of the genus distribution. The new species described here was collected in streams of the Rio das Velhas drainage, Rio São Francisco basin, draining the Serra do Espinhaço.

Introduction: Prospective registration of randomized clinical trials (RCTs) is highly recommended to ensure research transparency and prevent selective outcome reporting (SOR). This study aimed to evaluate the adherence to registration and the presence of SOR in RCTs published in endodontic journals over the past 5 years.
Methods: Electronic searches were conducted in PubMed and the libraries of the Journal of Endodontics, International Endodontic Journal, European Endodontic Journal, and Australian Endodontic Journal.

Ninety years after his death in 1934, the artistic beauty of the innovative brain images created by physician and histologist Santiago Ramón y Cajal, as well as his revolutionary neuroanatomical theory, remains relevant today. As a scientist who isolated brain nerve cells, he visualized them as physically distinct entities, answering one of the most crucial questions of his time. Prior to his work, the prevailing belief was in the reticular theory, which suggested that nervous tissue was continuous and formed a network of interconnected cells.
