Introduction: Human metabolomics has made significant strides in understanding metabolic changes and their implications for human health, with promising applications in diagnostics and treatment, particularly regarding the gut microbiome. However, progress is hampered by issues with data comparability and reproducibility across studies, limiting the translation of these discoveries into practical applications.
Objectives: This study aims to evaluate the fit-for-purpose of a suite of human stool samples as potential candidate reference materials (RMs) and assess the state of the field regarding harmonizing gut metabolomics measurements.

For decades, periodontitis has been considered to be a local inflammatory disease of the periodontal tissues in the oral cavity. Initially, associations of periodontitis with a multitude of noncommunicable diseases were each studied separately, and relationships were shown. The associations of periodontitis with morbidities, such as cardiovascular diseases, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes mellitus, respiratory diseases, have been demonstrated.

Five-membered heterocyclic compounds containing nitrogen atoms are important biomolecule building blocks. In addition to their fundamental biological importance, these molecular structures are used in several technological applications. Consequently, it is essential to develop techniques that allow the characterization of these fundamental systems.

Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) is initiated by a primary insult that triggers a cascade of pathological events, including damage to lung epithelial and endothelial cells, extracellular matrix disruption, activation of immune cells, and the release of pro-inflammatory mediators. These events lead to increased alveolar-capillary barrier permeability, resulting in interstitial/alveolar edema, collapse, and subsequent hypoxia and hypercapnia. ARDS not only affects the lungs but also significantly impacts the cardiovascular system.

With the growth of the chemical industry over the last decade, the need for cheaper (and more environmentally friendly) alternatives to petrochemicals of ever-increasing cost has grown steadily. Oleochemicals and biodiesel (OC/BD) are considered as green alternatives to petroleum derivatives, because they come from renewable oils and fats. OC/BD are currently produced by the traditional energy intensive chemical catalyzed methods, which have several economic and environmental drawbacks.

Post-COVID-19 Condition (PCC) refers to a multisystemic syndrome that persists for months after SARS-CoV-2 infection. Cognitive deficits, fatigue, depression, and anxiety are common manifestations of the condition, but the underlying mechanisms driving these long-lasting neuropsychiatric features are still unclear. We conducted a prospective multi-method investigation of post-hospitalization COVID-19 patients in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Background: Quantification of pulmonary edema in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) by chest computed tomography (CT) scan has not been validated in routine diagnostics due to its complexity and time-consuming nature. Therefore, the single-indicator transpulmonary thermodilution (TPTD) technique to measure extravascular lung water (EVLW) has been used in the clinical setting. Advances in artificial intelligence (AI) have now enabled CT images of inhomogeneous lungs to be segmented automatically by an intensive care physician with no prior radiology training within a relatively short time.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different concentrations of triciribine, a selective Akt inhibitor, on various aspects of oocyte maturation and on the IVF of bovine embryos. Cumulus-oocyte complexes (COCs) were matured in vitro in medium supplemented with: 0 (control), 1, 5, 10, and 20 μM of triciribine. The nuclear maturation was assessed by staining with acetic orcein, while the cytoplasmic maturation was evaluated by mitochondrial (MitoTracker® Red CMXRos) and lipid droplets distribution (LipidTOX).

Introduction: Female sexual dysfunction (FSD) remains a silent problem, especially in Arabic-speaking countries and the Middle East and most of the data are from Western countries. Sociocultural determinants haven't been getting the same attention as biological and psychological factors when studying sexual health.
Objectives: To assess the prevalence of FSD in the Arab and Middle Eastern world and understand the sociocultural determinants related.

Objective: Pharmacologic or genetic manipulation of O-GlcNAcylation, an intracellular, single sugar post-translational modification, are difficult to interpret due to the pleotropic nature of O-GlcNAc and the vast signaling pathways it regulates.
Method: To address the pleotropic nature of O-GlcNAc, we employed either OGT (O-GlcNAc transferase), OGA (O-GlcNAcase) liver knockouts, or pharmacological inhibition of OGA coupled with multi-Omics analysis and bioinformatics.
Results: We identified numerous genes, proteins, phospho-proteins, or metabolites that were either inversely or equivalently changed between conditions.

The global imperative to shift towards renewable and sustainable resources has spurred significant interest in exploring and utilizing platform chemicals derived from renewable feedstocks. Among these, levoglucosenone (LGO) and Cyrene™ have emerged as promising candidates. LGO, derived from the pyrolysis of cellulose and hemicellulose, exhibits structural versatility, making it an attractive starting material for various valuable products.

The assembly of a comprehensive and dated Tree of Life (ToL) remains one of the most formidable challenges in evolutionary biology. The complexity of life's history, involving both vertical and horizontal transmission of genetic information, defies its representation by a simple bifurcating phylogeny. With the advent of genome and metagenome sequencing, vast amounts of data have become available.

Background: Despite being essential in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), mechanical ventilation (MV) may cause lung injury and hemodynamic instability. Mechanical power (MP) may describe the net injurious effects of MV, but whether it reflects the hemodynamic effects of MV is currently unclear. We hypothesized that MP is also associated with cardiac output (CO) and pulmonary blood flow (PBF).

From Darwin's visit to nowadays, we analyzed the changes in species- and genus-level richness and turnover, equity, diversity, composition, as well as functional group and functional strategy dynamics over a 213-year historical series of the seaweed assemblage from Rio de Janeiro Bay. We developed new analysis methods to serve as a protocol for worldwide functional and bioindicator assessment of seaweed assemblages. Over the two centuries of changes tracked, the integration of taxonomic, functional group, and functional strategy analyses unraveled a trajectory of seaweed assemblage restructuring under human disturbance.

We presented a method to find potential cancer attractors using single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) data. We tested our method in a Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM) dataset, an aggressive brain tumor presenting high heterogeneity. Using the cancer attractor concept, we argued that the GBM's underlying dynamics could partially explain the observed heterogeneity, with the dataset covering a representative region around the attractor.

Ocotea is an important genus of Lauraceae plant family that comprises over 400 species, many of which pose challenges in taxonomic differentiation due to their complex botanical characteristics. Chemosystematics, and more recently, chemophenetics, have emerged as valuable tools to address these challenges based on their natural products (NPs) composition. O.

HIV RNA plasma viral load (VL) is the standard surrogate marker to monitor response to antiretroviral treatment (ART). We compared the linearity, repeatability, and concordance of six commercially available HIV RNA VL platforms using clinical samples from patients from Brazilian sites where different HIV-1 subtypes co-circulate. A total of 150 plasma samples from each city were collected in Curitiba, Southern Brazil (subtype C), São Paulo (subtype B), and Santos (BF recombinants), Southeast Brazil.

Background: Cadmium (Cd), a highly toxic heavy metal from agricultural activities, and its exposure can lead to impaired renal function by increasing reactive oxygen species. The atemoya fruit is known for its high phenolic and antioxidant compounds. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of atemoya extracts on renal function, oxidative stress parameters, and inflammatory biomarkers in a cadmium-induced nephrotoxicity model.
