Assessing the quality of surface waters is essential for identifying changes in freshwater ecosystems and supporting the planning/proposing of measures to mitigate polluting sources. However, many studies involving the identification of pathogenic bacteria and/or their resistance profile to antimicrobial agents need a more holistic approach to conditioning or modulating factors. Thus, we apply different multivariate statistical techniques to the data set from the Capibaribe River's surface water, one of the most important in the Northeast of Brazil.

The effects of a single feeding cycle followed by a continuous aeration phase (AND) and a step-feeding cycle followed by intermittent aerobic/idle phases (AND) on the production and emission of nitrous oxide (NO) from aerobic granular sludge (AGS) from real domestic sewage were studied. Higher NO emissions were observed in the AND treatment, and 9.2 ± 4.

Background And Aim: Diabetes has been shown in last decades to be associated with a significantly higher mortality among patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) treated with primary PCI (PPCI). Therefore, the aim of current study was to evaluate the impact of diabetes on times delays, reperfusion and mortality in a contemporary STEMI population undergoing PPCI, including treatment during the COVID pandemic.
Methods And Results: The ISACS-STEMI COVID-19 is a large-scale retrospective multicenter registry involving PPCI centers from Europe, Latin America, South-East Asia and North-Africa, including patients treated from 1st of March until June 30, 2019 and 2020.

Purpose: To evaluate the influence of late cholecystectomy following bariatric surgery on the postoperative evolution of weight loss and biochemical, metabolic, and micronutrient parameters.
Methods: A retrospective study that assessed 86 patients who underwent cholecystectomy after at least 18 months of bariatric surgery. The analyzed variables included demographic data, comorbidities, weight loss, and biochemical, metabolic, and micronutrient parameters.

Coral reefs are suffering globally from the increased frequency and intensification of thermal anomalies, caused by anthropogenic climate change, leading to major mass bleaching events over the past three decades. Environmental factors, including temperature, geomorphology, interspecific competition, protection status and local settings, can modulate the severity of bleaching and the subsequent survival capacity of corals and hydrocorals after mass bleaching events. However, the complexity of environmental factors interacting over fine-scale spatial-temporal scales is still a major gap in understanding coral bleaching events of South Atlantic reefs.

Background: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common joint disorder causing pain and stiffness, with limited effective treatment options. Methotrexate, known for its anti-inflammatory properties in rheumatoid arthritis, is being explored as a treatment for OA. This study evaluates Methotrexate's efficacy compared to placebo in reducing OA symptoms, such as stiffness in the knee and hand, and its impact on pain, physical function.

Background: Lip exposure to carcinogens lead to several disorders, such as actinic cheilitis (AC) and lower lip squamous cell carcinoma (LLSCC). Although several studies have described important pathways in lip carcinogenesis, the comprehension of association of target genes in this process and their association with tumor microenvironment still need to be better understood.
Methods: Tissue samples of 30 AC and 17 LLSCC cases were included for histopathological analysis, immunohistochemical expression of CD4, CD8, and PD-L1, and fluorescence in situ hybridization for AURKA, AURKB, TP53, PTEN, CCND1, and MYC.

Lung cancer has the highest mortality rates worldwide, and Human Papillomavirus (HPV) has been associated with its carcinogenesis. In this study, HPV16 genes' expressions were investigated in patient samples, along with the immunological response promoted by lymphocytes and monocytes in A549 cells transfected with HPV oncogenes and co-cultured with PBMC. An increase in the expression of E5 was observed in the patients' samples.

Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is a neglected tropical disease associated with poverty and poor environmental conditions. With the inclusion of vector control activities in LF surveillance actions, there is a need to develop simple methods to identify areas with higher mosquito density and thus a higher consequent risk of transmission. An ecological study was conducted in Igarassu, which is in the metropolitan region of Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil.

In this study, recycled acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene terpolymer (ABSr) was reused to produce polyamide 6 (PA6)-based blends. This was achieved through reactive compatibilization using styrene-acrylonitrile-maleic anhydride (SAN-g-MA) copolymer with a high degree of functionalization (6-10% MA). The PA6/ABSr and PA6/ABSr/SAN-g-MA blends were prepared through melt processing and injection molding and then analyzed for their rheological, mechanical, thermomechanical, thermal, and structural properties, as well as morphology.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are widely used in therapy due to their anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. However, their clinical use is often associated with gastrointestinal complications. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the protective effect of a sulfated iota-carrageenan isolated from the marine alga (IC-Sf) against naproxen-induced gastrointestinal injury.

Background: Cutaneous Leishmaniasis (CL) is a neglected tropical disease endemic in Brazil. Morbidity and disabilities caused by CL lesions require an analysis of a Global Burden of Disease (GBD), which would help discern the impact on the Brazilian population. Herein, we assess the burden of CL and its spatial and temporal patterns in Brazil between 2001 and 2021.
