Objectives: There is a scarcity of randomized clinical trials (RCT) that report medium- and long-term results and a lack of consensus in the literature on the predictability of immediately loaded unsplinted narrow diameter implants supporting mandibular overdentures. This RCT compared the performance of conventional (CL) and immediate loading (IL) of mandibular overdentures retained by two narrow-diameter implants for 3 years.

Materials And Methods: Patients from an RCT treated with CL or IL were invited to attend to 2- and 3-year follow-ups.

Dent J (Basel)

June 2023

Graduate Program in Dentistry, Pelotas Dental School, Federal University of Pelotas, Gonçalves Chaves Street, 457/Rm 702-3, Downtown Pelotas, Pelotas 96015-560, RS, Brazil.

This systematic review synthesizes the existing evidence in the literature regarding the association of propolis with controlled delivery systems (DDSs) and its potential therapeutic action in dental medicine. Two independent reviewers performed a literature search up to 1 June 2023 in five databases: PubMed/Medline, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Scopus, and Embase, to identify the eligible studies. Clinical, in situ, and in vitro studies that investigated the incorporation of propolis as the main agent in DDSs for dental medicine were included in this study.

Objectives: The objective of this study is to evaluate the longevity of two fiber post cementation strategies in a prospective, multicenter, non-inferiority, double-blind randomized controlled trial.

Methods: A total of 152 teeth, with adequate endodontic treatment and loss of coronal structure and bilateral simultaneous posterior occlusal contacts, were randomly allocated to receive glass fiber posts cemented with a conventional cementation strategy (CRC group: adhesive system + resin cement) (Adper Single Bond + RelyX ARC; 3 M-ESPE) or a self-adhesive cementation strategy (SRC group: self-adhesive resin cement; RelyX U100/U200; 3 M-ESPE). The patients were recalled annually for clinical and radiographical evaluation with a 93% recall rate (142 teeth, with 74 at CR groups and 68 at SRC group).

Temperament traits mediate the relationship between CACNA1C polymorphisms and bipolar disorder in cisgender women.

Eur Arch Psychiatry Clin Neurosci

February 2023

Post-Graduation Program in Health and Behavior, Center of Health Science, Catholic University of Pelotas, 373, 324C Gonçalves Chaves Street, Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul, CEP 96015-560, Brazil.

Article Synopsis
  • Research explored how temperament traits impact bipolar disorder (BD) and their connection to genetic variations in the CACNA1C gene, particularly in relation to biological sex.
  • A study of 878 Caucasian individuals aged 18-35 in Brazil found that certain temperament traits mediated the relationship between specific genetic polymorphisms and BD, particularly in women.
  • The results suggested that temperament traits function as endophenotypes for BD in females, but no effects were observed in cisgender men, highlighting a sex-specific interaction in the genetic-temperament-BD link.

BDNF Levels According to Variations in the CACNA1C Gene: Sex-Based Disparity.

Cell Mol Neurobiol

January 2023

Laboratory of Clinical Neuroscience, Post-Graduation Program in Health and Behavior, Catholic University of Pelotas, Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

Article Synopsis
  • The CACNA1C gene is linked to psychiatric disorders through its role in regulating BDNF levels via calcium channels.
  • The study examined the impact of specific genetic polymorphisms (rs1006737 and rs4765913) on BDNF levels in 641 young adults, focusing on possible differences between sexes.
  • Results showed that these polymorphisms influenced BDNF levels differently in men and women, suggesting gender-specific biological mechanisms that could help explain the link between CACNA1C and psychiatric conditions.

Article Synopsis
  • * Out of 151 articles, nine studies were included, with five undergoing meta-analysis, revealing brain activity differences between bruxers and non-bruxers, although statistical significance was not achieved.
  • * The research suggests bruxism affects neural pathways related to jaw control, but inconsistencies in bruxism classification and neuroplasticity measurements complicate definitive conclusions, highlighting the need for more comprehensive future studies.

November 2021

Post-Graduate Program in Biochemistry and Bioprospecting, Laboratory of Oral Microbiology, Pelotas Dental School, Federal University of Pelotas, 457 Gonçalves Chaves, Room 503, Pelotas, RS, 96015-560, Brazil.

Chitosan films containing distilled pyroligneous extracts of Eucalyptus grandis (DPEC), characterized and developed by Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation-Embrapa Temperate Agriculture (EMBRAPA-CPACT), were evaluated for antimicrobial activity against Candida albicans, Streptococcus mutans, and Lactobacillus acidophilus by direct contact test. Further, their capacity for the prevention of teeth enamel demineralization and cytotoxicity in vitro were also determined. The natural polymers were tested at different concentrations (1500-7500 µg mL) and the formulation of an experimental fluoride varnish with antimicrobial activity was evaluated by direct contact test, whereas cytotoxicity was analyzed through the colorimetric MTT assay.
