This comprehensive overview of the historical milestones in cell culture underscores key breakthroughs that have shaped the field over time. It begins with Wilhelm Roux's seminal experiments in the 1880s, followed by the pioneering efforts of Ross Granville Harrison, who initiated groundbreaking experiments that fundamentally shaped the landscape of cell culture in the early 20th century. Carrel's influential contributions, notably the immortalization of chicken heart cells, have marked a significant advancement in cell culture techniques.

Background/objectives: The associations between low birth weight (LBW) and the aggregation of metabolic risk factors (MRF) in youth remain ambiguous. Thus, this study analysed the interrelationship among MRF, LBW, and behavioural factors in adolescents.
Methods: The sample of the present cross-sectional study comprised 491 youth (229 males, 262 females) aged 14-17 years.

Glycated albumin (GA) serves as a biomarker for short-term glycemic control (2-3 weeks), playing a role in diabetes management. Our goal was to establish reference intervals (RIs) for serum GA, and the ratios of 1,5-anhydroglucitol to GA (AGI) and GA to HbA1c in a Euro-Brazilian pediatric population (10 y, n = 299), adults (43.5 y; n = 290), and pregnant women (26 y, n = 406; 26.

Biofilms are of great concern for the meat industry because, despite the implementation of control plans, they remain important hotspots of contamination by foodborne pathogens, highlighting the need to better understand the ecology of these microecosystems. The objective of this paper was to critically survey the recent scientific literature on microbial biofilms of importance for meat safety and quality, also pointing out the most promising methods to combat them. For this, the databases PubMed, Scopus, Science Direct, Web of Science, and Google Scholar were surveyed in a 10-year time frame (but preferably papers less than 5 years old) using selected keywords relevant for the microbiology of meats, especially considering bacteria that are tolerant to cleaning and sanitization processes.

Background: Global methylation refers to the total methylation in the DNA and can also be inferred from the Line 1 and Alu regions, as these repeats are very abundant in the genome. The main function of DNA methylation is to control gene expression and is associated with both normal and pathological mechanisms. DNA methylation depends on enzymes that generate the methyl radical (e.

Correlations play a pivotal role in various fields of science, particularly in quantum mechanics, yet their proper quantification remains a subject of debate. In this work, we aimed to discuss the challenge of defining a reliable measure of total correlations. We first outlined the essential properties that an effective correlation measure should satisfy and reviewed existing measures, including quantum mutual information, the -norm of the correlation matrix, and the recently defined quantum Pearson correlation coefficient.

Microplastics (MP) are suitable substrates for the colonization of harmful microalgal cells and the adsorption of their lipophilic compounds including phycotoxins. Moreover, such interactions likely change as physical-chemical characteristics of the MP surface are gradually modified during plastic degradation in aquatic environments. Using a combination of innovative laboratory experiments, this study systematically investigated, for the first time, the influence of various MP characteristics (polymeric composition, shape, size, and/or surface roughness) on its capacity to carry both living harmful algal cells and dissolved phycotoxins.

The oncoprotein c-Myc is expressed in all breast cancer subtypes, but its expression is higher in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) compared to estrogen receptor (ER+), progesterone receptor (PR+), or human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2+) positive tumors. The c-Myc gene is crucial for tumor progression and therapy resistance, impacting cell proliferation, differentiation, senescence, angiogenesis, immune evasion, metabolism, invasion, autophagy, apoptosis, chromosomal instability, and protein biosynthesis. Targeting c-Myc has emerged as a potential therapeutic strategy for TNBC, a highly aggressive and deadly breast cancer form.

Molecular subtypes, such as defined by The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), delineate a cancer's underlying biology, bringing hope to inform a patient's prognosis and treatment plan. However, most approaches used in the discovery of subtypes are not suitable for assigning subtype labels to new cancer specimens from other studies or clinical trials. Here, we address this barrier by applying five different machine learning approaches to multi-omic data from 8,791 TCGA tumor samples comprising 106 subtypes from 26 different cancer cohorts to build models based upon small numbers of features that can classify new samples into previously defined TCGA molecular subtypes-a step toward molecular subtype application in the clinic.

Patients with radiographic axial spondyloarthritis (r-axSpA) experience a higher prevalence of fragility fractures, though the pathophysiology of osteoporosis associated with this disease remains poorly understood. The objective of this study was to evaluate the histomorphometric data in r-axSpA patients. Male r-axSpA patients up to 55 years old were enrolled in this cross-sectional study.

Introduction: Home-based records (HBRs) are widely used for recording health information including child immunisations. We studied levels and inequalities in HBR ownership in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) using data from national surveys conducted since 2010.
Methods: We used data from national household surveys (Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) and Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys (MICS)) from 82 LMICs.

Opioid use disorder is a public health problem that includes symptoms such as withdrawal syndrome and opioid-induced hyperalgesia. Currently, drugs to treat side effects of opioids also have undesirable effects, which lead to limitations. This study investigated the effect of a treatment with cannabidiol in morphine-induced hyperalgesia and withdrawal behavior in morphine-dependent rats.

Background: Disability insurance represents a significant economic burden within Brazil's social security system, yet long-term cost trends across disease groups remain understudied, hindering informed prevention and management strategies. Hospital costs, which account for approximately 40% of direct healthcare expenses, were selected as a comparative reference to contextualize the economic burden of disability insurance.
Objective: This study analyzes long-term cost trends of newly granted disability insurance by disease groups in Brazil, comparing them to public health system hospitalization expenses.

Introduction The anterior cruciate ligament is the most commonly injured ligament in the knee. Its injury is often evaluated with orthopedic tests during physical examination, but this turns out to be a subjective assessment. A knee arthrometer is a mechanical device developed in the 1970s to improve the diagnostic accuracy of anterior cruciate ligament injury.

The frequency and intensity of wildfires have been increasing in many parts of the world, which may result in biodiversity loss. Wildfires can devastate plant communities, generating toxic ash that pollutes watercourses through runoff. However, our understanding of the effects of ash exposure on aquatic biodiversity is still limited.

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) plays a pivotal role in reproductive physiology, including gonadal development, though its influence on testis and ovary development has only recently gained attention. The ECS comprises lipid-derived ligands such as anandamide (AEA) and 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG), along with cannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2, which are expressed in various gonadal cells. Emerging research indicates that ECS signaling is critical for testosterone synthesis and gonadal cell proliferation and differentiation.

MicroRNAs can be found intracellularly incorporated into extracellular vesicles (EV-miRNAs) or extracellularly as cell-free miRNAs (cf-miRNAs). This study aimed to compare the diagnostic and prognostic potential of four miRNAs with recognized roles in prostate cancer as cf-miRNAs and EV-miRNAs, obtained from liquid biopsies (LB). Total RNA was isolated from whole plasma and plasma EVs from 15 controls (CTR) and 30 patients (20 with localized prostate cancer (PCa), 10 with metastatic prostate cancer (mPCa)).
