Background: Disability insurance represents a significant economic burden within Brazil's social security system, yet long-term cost trends across disease groups remain understudied, hindering informed prevention and management strategies. Hospital costs, which account for approximately 40% of direct healthcare expenses, were selected as a comparative reference to contextualize the economic burden of disability insurance.
Objective: This study analyzes long-term cost trends of newly granted disability insurance by disease groups in Brazil, comparing them to public health system hospitalization expenses.

The frequency and intensity of wildfires have been increasing in many parts of the world, which may result in biodiversity loss. Wildfires can devastate plant communities, generating toxic ash that pollutes watercourses through runoff. However, our understanding of the effects of ash exposure on aquatic biodiversity is still limited.

Cardiometabolic syndrome (CMS) is a complex clinical condition that encompasses metabolic dysregulation, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes risk factors. Worldwide, CMS is underdiagnosed, and its occurrence significantly increases cardiovascular morbimortality. Despite available pharmacological treatments, the approach is fragmented, and the associated clinical conditions are treated independently.

Objective: To analyze the effects of a physical therapy intervention on the muscle strength and power of the knee flexors and extensors and functional balance in older adults with Parkinson's disease (PD), according to its clinical severity.
Methods: Forty older adults diagnosed with PD were evaluated before and after 48-week of a basic exercise program (two 20-min sessions a week) to improve functional balance and quadriceps strength. The variables analyzed were: motor aspects of PD, assessed using the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS); functional mobility; peak torque (PT) and mean power (MP) at the knee flexors and extensors, evaluated using an isokinetic dynamometer (CYBEX®) on both legs at 60°/s (PT) and 240°/s (P); Timed Up and Go (TUG) test; and Tinetti Index.

The aim was to compare the outcomes acquired from the OSA-Vet device with conventional quantitative and qualitative tear tests and between groups within each test, in brachycephalic dogs both healthy and those diagnosed with keratoconjunctivitis sicca. The dogs were divided into four groups: healthy dogs (HD), with mild KCS (MIKCS); moderate KCS (MOKCS); severe KCS (SKCS). All patients underwent ocular surface diagnostic examination in the following order, with a 10-minute interval between tests: non-invasive tear film breakup time (TBUTNI - OSA-Vet), tear meniscus height (TMH-OSA-Vet), meniscometry (I-Tear test), Schirmer Tear Test-1 (STT-1), and tear film breakup time (TBUT).

This study aimed to estimate genetic parameters for race time in seconds and final ranking, as well as to analyze the genetic trends associated with race time. The study utilized a dataset consisting of 23,290 records of race times and final ranks at distances of 1,000, 1,600, and 2,000 m from 6,213 Thoroughbred horses from the São Paulo Jockey Club. Our model considered the year of the run, animal sex, race class, track conditions, the linear effect of horse weight and age, and the quadratic effect of age as fixed covariates.

Members of the phospholipase D (PLD) superfamily found in Loxosceles spider venoms are potent toxins with inflammatory and necrotizing activities. They degrade phospholipids in cell membranes, generating bioactive molecules that activate skin cells. These skin cells, in turn, activate leukocytes involved in dermonecrosis, characterized by aseptic coagulative necrosis.

The Monticola series comprises two anthropophilic and widely distributed species in Brazil: Pintomyia (Pifanomyia) monticola (Costa Lima, 1932) and Pintomyia (Pifanomyia) misionensis (Castro, 1959). They mainly occur in the Atlantic Rainforest, and it is known that Pi. monticola comprises at least two well-structured genetic lineages regarding a fragment of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene.

Conventional methods for diagnosing tuberculosis (TB), a significant global health challenge, often have drawbacks like time-consuming procedures, limited sensitivity, and the need for complex, expensive infrastructure. Hence, the development of electrochemical immunosensors has emerged as a promising strategy for TB detection due to their simplicity, speed, sensitivity, portability, and cost-effectiveness. In this study, we developed a rapid, simple, and low-cost immunosensor using a lab-made screen-printed electrode (SPE) based on the peptide TB 68-G as a recognition site.

Three-dimensional (3D) printing is a new method of creating anatomical models, which can enhance the training of students and health professionals. The large breed-variation in dogs means that interpretation of thoracic radiographs can be challenging for the inexperienced radiologist. The aim of this study was to develop digital and printed 3D cardiac models from six canine breeds and evaluate their use as a tool for studying breed variations in radiology.

Introduction: Bilateral cleft lip (BCL) repair is a challenge due to anatomic and functional distortions, worse than unilateral cleft. With regard to the nose, BCL can result in certain characteristics, such as a short columella, a flattened and widened tip, and horizontally oriented nostrils. Lip and nose treatment is advocated by some surgeons to achieve a better outcome.
