We evaluate the evidence of cryptic speciation in Larimus breviceps, a species widely distributed in the western South Atlantic, from the Greater Antilles to Santa Catarina in Brazil. Mitochondrial (COI, Cyt b, and Control Region) and nuclear (IGF1 and Tmo-4C4) sequences were obtained from populations in the western South Atlantic. The analysis revealed two genetically distinct, sympatric lineages with no gene flow, with L.

The intensive use of oil and its derivatives is related to a greater frequency of accidents involving the release of pollutants that cause harmful effects on ecosystems. Actinobacteria are cosmopolitan and saprophytic microorganisms of great commercial interest, but because they are predominantly found in soil, most research into the products of this phylum's metabolism has focused on this habitat. Marine actinobacteria exhibit unique metabolic characteristics in response to extreme conditions in their habitat, which distinguishes them from terrestrial actinobacteria.

Brain cancer is considered one of the most aggressive and lethal types of cancer, including primary tumors, being subdivided into milder forms such as low-grade gliomas and glioblastoma, considered the most aggressive form with higher invasion. Among the hallmarks of glioblastoma, the deregulation of mitochondrial metabolism has not yet been fully elucidated. Therefore, the search for mitochondrial biomarkers that can be used as indicators of the progression of this type of cancer is necessary.

Metallodrugs: Synthesis, mechanism of action and nanoencapsulation for targeted chemotherapy.

Biochem Pharmacol

January 2025

UCD School of Chemical and Bioprocess Engineering, University College Dublin, Belfield, Dublin 4, D04 V1W8, Ireland. Electronic address:

As a multifactorial and heterogeneous disease, cancer has a high mortality rate, and the search for more effective treatments is an enormous challenge. Metal coordination compounds open a range of possibilities that conventional organic and biological molecules can no longer fulfil due to increasing drug resistance. Metallodrugs still have tremendous potential to help overcome drug resistance and find new cures in medicine, considering that at least 25 metallic elements participate in healthy functioning of the human body.

Article Synopsis
  • A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to evaluate the safety and efficacy of osimertinib in non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients with uncommon epidermal growth factor receptor mutations.
  • The analysis included 15 studies with 594 patients, revealing common mutations such as G719X and L861Q, and determining key metrics like a 51.30% objective response rate (ORR) and a median progression-free survival of 9.71 months.
  • Osimertinib was found to be generally safe, with only 21.77% of patients experiencing serious adverse events, showing promise for treating NSCLC with these uncommon mutations.

Altered leukocyte pattern and inflammatory markers in unvaccinated long covid patients: a cross-sectional study.

Sci Rep

November 2024

Department of Center for Biological Health Sciences (CCBS), Graduate Program in Parasitic Biology in Amazonia (PPGBPA), State University of Pará (UEPA), Marco, Belém, Pará, 66087-670, Brazil.

Long Covid results from the damage caused by SARS-CoV-2, involving the release of cytokines and the continuous activation of immune cells. This cross-sectional study investigates leukocyte and cytokine profiles in Long Covid patients in the Amazon, a region where such studies are limited. Blood samples were analysed for differential leukocyte counts and cytokine levels.

Despite all the efforts acquired in four years of the COVID-19 pandemic, the path to a full understanding of the biological mechanisms involved in this disease remains complex. This is partly due to a combination of factors, including the inherent characteristics of the infection, socio-environmental elements, and the variations observed within both the viral and the human genomes. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the correlation between genetic host factors and the severity of COVID-19.

This study reports additional information's of geometric, electronic, thermodynamic, and vibrational properties of a Cu(II) complex with 1,10-phenanthroline and L-glutamine ligands. The experimental spectroscopic analyses were corroborated by density functional theory (DFT). Furthermore, these properties were evaluated using an implicit solvation method with water and methanol solvents, including vacuum condition.

Dichloro(l-histidine)copper(II) crystal ([Cu(l-His)Cl] complex) was obtained by the slow evaporation method and characterized concerning its thermal stability, phase transformations, and electronic and vibrational properties. X-ray diffraction (XRPD) confirmed that this complex crystallizes with an orthorhombic structure (222 space group). Thermal analyses (TG and DTA) demonstrate stability from ambient temperature up to 460 K, followed by a phase transition from the orthorhombic structure to the amorphous form around 465 K, as confirmed by temperature-dependent XRPD studies.

Purpose: The Myxozoa class is characterized by parasites that have valves joined by a suture line and polar capsules containing eversible spiral filamento and this class is considered an obligate parasite. The genus Ceratomyxa has approximately 300 species described in fish, both marine and freshwater fish, mainly infecting the gallbladder, but also occurring in the urinary bladder. This study describes a new species of Ceratomyxa in the Amazon region for Pimelodella cristata.

This study aimed to investigate the impact of minocycline on the alveolar bone in experimental periodontitis in rats. Thirty Wistar rats were randomly assigned to three groups: control without periodontitis; experimental periodontitis induced by ligature; experimental periodontitis + intraperitoneal administration minocycline for seven days. Ligatures remained in place in both periodontitis groups for 14 days.

The increase in the construction of mega dams in tropical basins is considered a threat to freshwater fish diversity. Although difficult to detect in conventional monitoring programs, rheophilic species and those reliant on shallow habitats comprise a large proportion of fish diversity in tropical basins and are among the most sensitive species to hydropower impacts. We used Baited Remote Underwater Video (BRUV), an innovative, non-invasive sampling technique, to record the impacts caused by Belo Monte, the third largest hydropower project in the world, on fishes inhabiting fast waters in the Xingu River.

  • Bladder cancer is a highly costly cancer with significant mortality influenced by various sociodemographic and health service factors, particularly in Brazil from 2000 to 2022.
  • The study found that the risk of bladder cancer mortality increases after age 50, with white individuals experiencing higher mortality rates than black and brown individuals.
  • Regional disparities were noted, with the South showing the highest mortality rates and a correlation between GDP and lower mortality in the South and Southeast; fewer medical procedures like biopsies were linked to higher mortality rates.

Introduction: Genetic variants may influence Toll-like receptor (TLR) signaling in the immune response to human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and lead to cervical cancer. In this study, we investigated the pattern of TLR expression in the transcriptome of HPV-positive and HPV-negative cervical cancer samples and looked for variants potentially related to TLR gene alterations in exomes from different populations.

Materials And Methods: A cervical tissue sample from 28 women, which was obtained from the Gene Expression Omnibus database, was used to examine TLR gene expression.

Dietary alternatives using insect-based products as an alternative for farm animal nutrition have been the object of study due to the high nutritional value of these feeds and the costs related to both their production and consequently their commercialization. Thus, the use of flies, especially larvae, has a high content of proteins and lipids (fat), as well as minerals and essential nutrients for development and growth, directly impacting the production of these animals, whether meat or milk. Therefore, the objective of this study was to compile data from the literature on the nutritional value of adults and larvae of Black soldier () and housefly () as a dietary alternative for animal feed.
