Article Synopsis
  • Population aging in Puerto Rico is being accelerated by declining fertility rates, increased life expectancy, and high levels of working-age out-migration.
  • Compared to other countries, Puerto Rico's older population (65+) nearly doubled from 11% to 21% after 2010, a trend not seen in the comparison countries.
  • The demographic shift in Puerto Rico shifted from a linear to an exponential growth pattern due to the out-migration primarily affecting younger, working-age residents.

Article Synopsis
  • Racial differences in genetic risk for venous thromboembolism (VTE) were studied, focusing on specific gene variants prevalent in East Asian populations rather than Caucasians.
  • An international study involving 2850 individuals from Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Hungary, and Brazil identified key gene polymorphisms related to VTE.
  • Three gene variants were found to be common among East and Southeast Asians, with varying frequencies, while being absent in Caucasians and Brazilian participants.

In this work, we describe a new one-pot synthesis route of valuable linalool oxidation derivatives (, 2-(5-methyl-5-vinyltetrahydrofuran-2-yl propan-2-ol) (1a)), 2,2,6-trimethyl-6-vinyltetrahydro-2-pyran-3-ol (1b) and diepoxide (1c), using a green oxidant (, hydrogen peroxide) under mild conditions (, room temperature). Lacunar Keggin heteropolyacid salts were the catalysts investigated in this reaction. Among them, NaPWO was the most active and selective toward oxidation products.

Background: Around 300 million people world-wide suffer from asthma, and the prevalence of allergic diseases has increased. Much effort has been used in the study of mechanisms involved in the immune response observed in asthma to intervene for the treatment of this condition. During inflammation in asthma, Th2 cytokines and eosinophils are essential components of the host immune system.

Proteins associated with the schistosome tegument are of great importance for the development of new intervention strategies since they may be exposed on the surface of the parasite. Herein, we have isolated a cDNA clone encoding for the Schistosoma mansoni SmIg and its recombinant protein was tested as a potential vaccine candidate. Initially, its amino acid sequence was analysed by bioinformatics and shown to possess an N-terminal signal peptide, a C-terminal transmembrane helix, 4 glycosylation sites, an immunoglobulin conserved domain and 73% similarity with a hypothetical S.
