Although edible insects (EIs) are encouraged as a sustainable source of protein, their consumption is not as generalised as other types of food that are internationally accepted. While in some regions of the world, EIs are part of the gastronomic and cultural traditions, in other regions, people are not so receptive to this type of food, and some people even express some disgust towards it. Hence, this research focused on the habits of the participants regarding the consumption of insects as well as their perceptions about EIs being or not a part of the local culture or gastronomic patrimony.

P2X7 is a purinergic receptor physiologically activated by extracellular ATP. Its activation induces proinflammatory responses, including cytokine release, reactive oxygen species formation, and cell death. Previous in vivo experimental models demonstrated that P2X7 blockade has anti-inflammatory effects; however, there are no drugs used in clinical therapy that act on the P2X7 receptor.

Article Synopsis
  • Patient advocacy is a key ethical element in nursing, emphasizing the need to respect and protect patients' rights and autonomy, especially highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • The study focused on 25 ICU nurses in Brazil, exploring how the pandemic challenged their ability to advocate for patients while also reinforcing the moral identity of nursing as a profession.
  • Despite the difficulties faced during the pandemic, nurses maintained a crucial role in amplifying patients' voices and safeguarding their dignity, thus promoting a patient-centered approach to care.

Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) infection is characterized by febrile illness, severe joint pain, myalgia, and cardiovascular complications. Given that CHIKV stimulates reactive oxygen species (ROS) and pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines, events that disrupt vascular homeostasis, we hypothesized that CHIKV induces arterial dysfunction by directly impacting redox-related mechanisms in vascular cells. Wild-type (WT) and iNOS (iNOS) mice were administered either CHIKV (1.

Background: Valganciclovir (ValG) is the most widely used drug for cytomegalovirus (CMV) prophylaxis in kidney transplant recipients (KTRs). However, it is associated with dose-limiting side effects and considerable costs. Some centers have identified valacyclovir (ValA) as an economically attractive alternative with a lower risk of bone marrow suppression.

Objectives: High sodium intake is a major risk factor for hypertension and renal diseases. Previous studies have shown that a suspension of ethanolic extract of Psidium guajava (guava) leaves (PsE) has antihypertensive effects in rats on a high-sodium diet (HSD), but some mechanisms to that remain unexplored. This study explored whether oral PsE treatment affects sodium handling by the intestine and alters the gut microbiome in HSD-fed rats.

Background: Considering the increasing prevalence of obesity/overweight, its treatment or prevention with new interventions can greatly help health and reduce its adverse effects in people. One of these new interventions is investigating the effect of Survodutide as a dual agonist of glucagon and GLP-1 receptors, which seems to be able to influence weight loss processes in different ways. In this study, we investigated the effect of injectable Survodutide on weight loss.

Department of Genetics, Ecology and Evolution, Institute of Biological Sciences, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Av. Pres. Antônio Carlos, 6627, 31270-901, Belo Horizonte, Brazil.

Article Synopsis
  • The study presents a new framework that uses evolutionary information to predict regions in proteins that contain linear B-cell epitopes (LBCEs).
  • This method builds models from data organized by evolutionary relationships, outperforming existing general approaches while using simpler features and less data.
  • The framework successfully identifies potential LBCEs in viruses like monkeypox and vaccinia, validated by patient sera, highlighting its utility for developing specific immunodiagnostic tools.

Introduction:  Cardioplegia, a therapy designed to induce reversible cardiac arrest, revolutionized cardiovascular surgery. Among the various pharmacological approaches is the histidine-tryptophan-ketoglutarate (HTK) solution. Despite numerous studies, no meta-analysis has investigated the efficacy of the HTK solution in the pediatric population.

Background: There is a growing body of evidence suggesting the association between psoriasis (PsO) and psoriatic arthritis (PsA) separately with metabolic syndrome (MS) in different populations. The literature is relatively scarce in terms of comparing the prevalence of MS in PsO and PsA with controls without systemic inflammatory diseases.

Objective: We aimed to assess the prevalence of MS among patients with PsO, PsA, and a control group without systemic inflammatory disease, in addition to investigating the risks of MS occurrence and its different components in each group.

Postbiotic lactate modulates the immune system in inflammatory bowel diseases. However, its role in experimental intestinal mucositis (IM) has not been elucidated. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of lactate supplementation (1 and 2 × 10-1 mol/l) in a 5-fluorouracil (5-FU)-induced IM model.

Clinical treatments employing a 3-dimensional computer-assisted endodontic access technique (CEAT-3D) to remove fiber posts from posterior teeth in a minimally invasive manner using computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) technology are described. Three patients with symptomatic molars and periapical radiolucency and with different treatment complexities had been referred for endodontic retreatment. For the removal of the fiber posts and endodontic retreatment, 3-dimensionally printed guides were designed from intraoral and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans with a digital planning software program.

Laboratorio de Carboidratos e Radioimunoensaios, Faculdade de Medicina, Universidade de São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil; Hospital das Clinicas, Faculdade de Medicina, Universidade de São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil. Electronic address:

Aims/hypothesis: The role of microRNAs (miRNAs) in the pathogenesis and progression of type 1 diabetes (T1D) has been described, but data remain scarce and conflicting.

Objectives: To evaluate the potential biological involvement of miRNA expression in the immune response and beta cell function in T1D.

Methods: We screened 10 serum miRNAs from 142 subjects divided into three groups: healthy individuals (control group; n = 52) and patients at different stages of T1D progression, from the initial immunological manifestation, presenting islet cell autoantibodies (AbP group; n = 39), to partial and severe beta cell damage in T1D (recent T1D group; n = 51).

Background: The present study aimed to evaluate the fatigue behavior of teeth filled with a calcium silicate-based sealer (Bio-C Sealer, BC) or an epoxy resin-based sealer (AH Plus, AH), in bulk or associated with gutta-percha as main core material.

Methods: Seventy-two sound human maxillary anterior teeth were initially selected. Sixty of them, were randomly chosen, and had their root canals prepared using nickel-titanium reciprocating instruments, being again randomly assigned to five experimental groups ( = 12): C+ (control + prepared but not filled); BC-B (BC in bulk); BC-GP (BC+ gutta-percha); AP-B (AH in bulk); AP-GP (AH+ gutta-percha).

Whole-body counter (WBC) systems are used for in vivo monitoring in occupational internal dosimetry, typically calibrated using physical anthropomorphic phantoms. Our research group previously 3D-printed the Reference Female Phantom for Internal Dosimetry (RFPID) without internal organs specifically designed for WBC calibration. The RFPID and it is intended to fill it homogenously with ballistic gel, which is commonly used as a tissue equivalent in ballistic studies.
